Google Maps’ Wheelchair accessible option filters suggested public-transit itineraries. Transit accessibility information is the underlying data about a particular stop, station, or trip—for example, whether boarding at a stop is marked accessible or whether a trip is marked wheelchair accessible. The route option uses that kind of information; the two are related, but they are not the same thing.
What is the difference?
| What you’re comparing | Wheelchair accessible route option | Transit accessibility information |
|---|---|---|
| What it describes | A suggested transit itinerary for a journey. | A transit data item, such as a stop, station, or trip. |
| What it does in Maps | Filters or helps you choose among the transit routes Maps suggests. | Provides details relevant to boarding or accessibility at a stop or on a trip. |
| Where the information comes from | Available transit directions and their underlying accessibility data. | Transit information supplied by local agencies. |
| What it does not establish | That every segment will suit every traveler’s needs. | That every stop, trip, or city has complete accessibility details. |
In Google’s transit data, wheelchair_boarding applies to a stop or station, while wheelchair_accessible applies to a trip. Those fields describe individual parts of transit service; the Maps option presents route suggestions using available information. Google Transit partner documentation defines these fields.

Why route results vary by city
Transit directions depend on local agencies adding route information to Google Maps. Google says transit directions are not available in every city, and the accessibility details available depend on the information agencies provide. As a result, the presence or absence of a filtered route should not be treated as a complete account of accessibility in a city. Google explains the agency dependency in its transit directions help and its transit data documentation.
Check the journey details that matter to you
Before relying on a suggested route, inspect the relevant origin, transfer stops, and destination. Stop-level boarding information and trip-level accessibility information apply to specific parts of a journey, not necessarily to every condition a traveler may need to assess. The available documentation describes the data and route setting, but does not promise that live information is complete or accurate for every trip.

Place accessibility is a separate feature
Google Maps can also show accessibility attributes for places, including entrance, restroom, seating, parking, and elevator access. These describe a business or other location—not the transit vehicle or itinerary. Google says wheelchair-accessible place information is available only in certain countries. On Android, its instructions say to enable Emphasize accessibility info in Maps settings, search for a place, and open a result marked with a wheelchair icon. See Google’s accessibility information for places.
