Google lists it at $99.99 in the US. Its specifications make it a promising smart-home hub, but they do not establish how good it sounds or how reliably it hears commands; those require hands-on testing.
Which Google Home speaker is this?
This review covers the Google Home Speaker (2026), the newer device—not the original Google Home speaker released in 2016, and not the Nest Audio. The shared “Google Home” name can make product listings confusing, so check the model name and year before buying.
Google positions the 2026 speaker around Google Home and Gemini for Home. It is a small tabletop unit that needs mains power, rather than a portable, battery-powered speaker.

What does it cost, and what is included?
At the time of the cited US Google Store listing, the speaker was priced at $99.99. Google’s listing also promoted six months of Google Home Premium, which Google valued at $60. That is a time-limited offer, not a guaranteed permanent entitlement; check the current Store listing and offer terms for your country before purchasing. Google Store
Some advanced Gemini for Home capabilities, including Gemini Live and advanced automations, are associated with Google Home Premium. The available pricing information does not establish the subscription’s renewal price after a trial, so factor in the current plan terms rather than assuming the advertised trial covers ongoing use.

How Gemini for Home works on this speaker
Google says buyers adding the 2026 speaker are eligible to opt in to Gemini for Home. Eligibility does not mean every feature is immediately available: Google is rolling out the assistant to selected countries and languages, and access can depend on compatible device firmware. Google describes Gemini for Home as offering advanced natural-language understanding and reasoning; that is Google’s product claim, not an independently tested result. Google’s product announcement
There is an important choice when switching an eligible home to Gemini for Home: Google says that once the home switches, it cannot switch back to Google Assistant. - Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Google lists the 2026 speaker among devices with complete Gemini for Home voice-assistant support, alongside several Nest speakers and displays, subject to firmware requirements. Older products—including the original Google Home, Google Home Max, and Nest Wifi point—support most features but not Gemini Live. Device eligibility and feature coverage can change as rollout expands.
Can it control Matter devices?
Google says the speaker supports Google Home and Matter and can act as a Matter hub. Its Thread 1.3 border-router capability is also part of the published specification. This makes it relevant for a Google Home setup built around compatible smart-home products, but protocol support should not be read as a guarantee that every Matter device or feature has been tested with this speaker. Confirm that a device works with Google Home and check its specific setup requirements before buying.

Sound quality: what the specifications do—and don’t—tell you
The hardware is a single 58 mm full-range driver with omnidirectional sound. That tells you something about the design and how Google intends sound to radiate, but it does not establish perceived fidelity, bass response, maximum clean volume, stereo imaging, or performance in a particular room.
No independent listening or microphone tests are available for this review. A firm sound-quality verdict would require listening to music and speech at everyday and high volumes, comparing microphone pickup at different distances and noise levels, and checking assistant response reliability. Treat Google’s driver and microphone figures as specifications, not proof of performance.

One speaker, a stereo pair, or a speaker group?
A single unit is the simplest option for voice assistance and music in one room. Google also supports pairing two speakers of the same model for stereo sound through the Google Home app. For its setup guidance, Google recommends solid, level surfaces and about 4–8 feet between the paired speakers. A two-speaker stereo pair is not the same as a multi-room speaker group, which is intended to play audio across devices or rooms. Google Home stereo-pairing instructions
Google says a stereo pair made with the 2026 speaker can be used for Google TV Streamer audio. For a stereo pair, the speakers must be the same model: two Google Home Speakers can pair together, but a Google Home Speaker and a Nest Audio cannot form one stereo pair. Nest Audio and Nest Mini (2nd gen) are also on Google’s compatibility list for stereo pairing with another matching unit.
Privacy and everyday controls
The speaker has a two-stage physical switch for turning off its microphones. That is a useful hardware control if you want to prevent the device from listening for voice commands, but this specification alone does not describe all data handling or privacy practices. Review Google’s current privacy documentation for how voice interactions and smart-home data are handled; the available product details do not establish independent privacy findings.
Quick Recap
Who should consider the Google Home Speaker?
- Consider it if you want a compact, mains-powered Google Home speaker with stated Matter and Thread support, and you are comfortable with Gemini features rolling out according to region, language, and firmware.
- Wait for independent listening tests if music quality, bass, loud-room volume, or microphone pickup is the main reason you are buying. The published hardware specifications cannot answer those questions.
- Compare with a matching older Google speaker if you want a stereo pair using a device you already own. Google’s pairing rules require two of the same model, so an existing Nest Audio cannot be paired in stereo with this speaker.
- Check the ongoing cost if you want Premium features beyond any introductory offer. Confirm the current subscription terms before counting those features as part of the speaker’s long-term value.
