Google’s Guided Learning is a Gemini study mode built to help you work toward an answer, rather than simply hand one over. It can turn course materials into a study guide, explain ideas in steps, ask questions to check your understanding, and suggest what to study next. A 2026 Google DeepMind report found promising math gains in one teacher-led trial, but that result is not a guarantee for every learner or setting.
What Guided Learning does differently
Google introduced Guided Learning in Gemini on August 6, 2025, as a “personal learning companion,” in the words of Google VP of Learning Maureen Heymans. The intended change is in how Gemini responds: instead of treating a question as a request for the finished answer, it tries to make the learner reason through the material.
Google’s September 23, 2025 explainer describes a tutor-like approach: break a problem into steps, ask probing or open-ended questions, adapt explanations, and check whether the learner understands. Product manager Nupur Jain summarized the aim as “help you learn, not just provide the answer.” The mode is designed to guide rather than guarantee that Gemini will never reveal a solution; it can still help with homework, but Google frames that as doing the work with the learner, not doing it for them.
How a Guided Learning session works
- Start with a topic or materials. Ask about a subject or provide course material to work from.
- Set a direction. Gemini can lay out a study plan or clarify an ambiguous prompt before proceeding.
- Work through concepts. It explains one idea at a time and uses questions to steer you toward the answer.
- Check understanding. It can quiz you or ask you to explain your reasoning rather than treating a read-through as proof of learning.
- Close with a recap. Gemini can summarize the topic and suggest what to study next.
That sequence is a description of the intended interaction, not a rigid script every session must follow. Google says the system uses instructions that encourage clarification and guided reasoning instead of immediately supplying an answer.

What you can use it for
Google’s explainer says Guided Learning can generate study guides from uploaded course materials, help debug code, explain subjects such as gravity with images and videos, check comprehension, recap a topic, and recommend next steps. It also supports quizzes and other interactive learning activities. Educators can share a dedicated Guided Learning link through Google Classroom.
- Study from class materials: Use course content as the basis for a study guide or review session.
- Understand a difficult concept: Ask for a step-by-step explanation, with visual aids where useful.
- Practice instead of copy: Work through a homework problem or coding issue with questions and feedback.
- Review and plan: Check what you understand, recap the topic, and identify a next subject to study.
What powers the teaching approach
Google says Guided Learning is powered by LearnLM, its family of models fine-tuned for learning and grounded in educational research. A LearnLM technical report describes “pedagogical instruction following”: system-level instructions specify teaching behaviors the model should try to use.
In evaluated learning scenarios, expert raters preferred LearnLM over GPT-4o by an average margin of 31%, over Claude 3.5 by 11%, and over Gemini 1.5 Pro by 13%, according to that report. These are comparative ratings of model responses in evaluation scenarios. They do not mean students learned 31%, 11%, or 13% more, and they do not establish how every Guided Learning session will perform.

What the 2026 Sierra Leone study found
A 2026 Google DeepMind report describes a teacher-led, eight-week evaluation involving 1,763 junior-secondary students across 12 schools in Port Loko District, Sierra Leone. Students using Gemini had math scores 0.258 standard deviations higher than a control group. Google DeepMind characterized the gain as roughly 1.2–1.7 years of typical learning progress over the eight-week trial.

| Reported finding | What it measures | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| +0.258 standard deviations in math scores | Difference versus a control group | Reported for this specific eight-week, teacher-led Sierra Leone evaluation. |
| Roughly 1.2–1.7 years of typical learning progress | Google DeepMind’s interpretation of the math-score result | An estimate for the trial result, not a prediction for an individual student. |
| Roughly 1.8–2.5 years of progress in classrooms targeting 12 hours of Gemini use | Results reported for classrooms with the use target | 69% of students met or exceeded the usage targets; this is a subgroup/context result, not a general expected outcome. |
| 91.4% of analyzed conversations classified as building conceptual understanding | Conversation analysis | Measures the character of analyzed interactions, not a direct test score or proof of lasting learning. |
| Scaffolding questions in 76% of messages; direct solutions in 2% | Observed response patterns in analyzed conversations | These figures describe the conversations studied, not a universal rate across all users. |
| Skill-building queries rose from 68% in week one to 90% in the final week; solution-seeking questions fell from 25% to 10% | Change in query patterns during the evaluation | Observed in the trial; query patterns alone do not establish that every student gained the same skills. |
The result is encouraging evidence that a carefully designed AI tutor can support learning in a particular classroom context. It does not settle how well the approach works across subjects, age groups, countries, or unsupervised use. The report says additional preregistered randomized trials are planned or underway. It also flags an achievement-gap concern: stronger students benefited most, so access to a tutor alone may not ensure that learners with different starting points benefit equally.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does it teach you instead of doing your homework?
That is the product’s stated intention: scaffold the work, ask you to think, and help you arrive at an answer. You can encourage that behavior with a prompt such as, “Quiz me one step at a time; don’t reveal the solution until I’ve tried.” If Gemini gives away too much, ask it to restart with hints or questions only. This is a practical way to set expectations, not a guarantee that every response will follow them perfectly.

For learning, use the interaction actively: attempt each step before asking for a hint, explain your reasoning in your own words, and ask Gemini to point out a specific gap rather than simply confirming that an answer is right. For consequential assignments, check the work against your class materials and your teacher’s directions.
