Google’s Gmail end-to-end encryption lets eligible Google Workspace organizations send client-side encrypted email to people using other email providers. It is not a general feature for free or personal Gmail accounts: an administrator must configure it, and Google’s October 2025 availability notice listed Workspace Enterprise Plus with the Assured Controls add-on.

What Google added—and when

Google announced the cross-provider capability on April 1, 2025. On October 2, 2025, Google Workspace Updates marked external sending generally available for eligible Gmail client-side encryption (CSE) users. On April 9, 2026, Google announced native support in the Gmail apps for Android and iOS for Gmail CSE users.

The announcement was aimed at organizations, not consumer Gmail users. Johney Burke, a Google Workspace senior product manager, wrote on April 1, 2025: “Today is Gmail’s birthday, and we wanted to do something special — enable enterprise users to send E2EE messages to any user on any email inbox with just a few clicks.” That describes Google’s intended experience, not an independent security assessment. How Gmail’s encrypted email works

Google describes Gmail CSE as encrypting message content in the browser before it is transmitted or stored in Google cloud storage. Google says the encryption keys remain under the organization’s control and are stored outside Google’s infrastructure. These are Google’s descriptions of its service; they should not be read as a guarantee about endpoint security or protection of all message metadata. Gmail Help: client-side encryption

Sending to someone outside Gmail

An eligible sender can address an encrypted message to a recipient who uses another email provider. Google says the external recipient is notified and can access the message through a guest-account browser experience. The recipient does not need the Gmail app for that browser route. Since April 2026, Gmail CSE users can also use the Gmail apps on Android and iOS; Google says recipients without the Gmail app can still read and reply in a browser guest experience. Who can use it

This is an organizational Workspace capability with edition and configuration requirements. Google’s October 2, 2025 notice listed availability for Workspace Enterprise Plus with the Assured Controls add-on. It also said external sending was off by default and administrators could enable it for organizational units or groups. Google’s user documentation describes eligible Workspace editions, but availability can depend on current licensing; check Google’s current edition and licensing information before making a purchasing or deployment decision. The published notice does not support claiming that the feature is available to free or personal Gmail accounts. Google Workspace Updates · Gmail CSE documentation

What administrators need to configure

Google’s administration documentation places Gmail E2EE under client-side encryption setup. When enabling Gmail CSE, administrators can use the “Encryption with guest accounts” option for the external-recipient workflow. Google’s setup materials distinguish this from the S/MIME configuration path. Google Workspace Admin Help: Gmail CSE

Before enabling it broadly, administrators should confirm that the organization meets the applicable licensing requirements, choose which organizational units or groups can use external sending, and review whether the workflow fits the organization’s security and compliance policies. Google notes that some Gmail features are unavailable with client-side encrypted email, so users should check the documented limitations before relying on specific Gmail functions. Gmail E2EE is not the same as S/MIME

Both involve encrypted email, but Google documents different setup and recipient workflows. Gmail E2EE’s external-recipient path uses guest accounts; Google’s S/MIME documentation describes a separate process for external sending. Google also documents PIV and CAC smart-card support in Gmail CSE, but that separate support does not establish that a smart card or card reader is required for the guest-account E2EE flow. What the feature does—and does not—establish

Google’s materials explain the intended encryption and guest-access experience, but the announcements do not provide independent comparative security testing against S/MIME or other encrypted-email products. They also do not establish a breach-reduction rate or other effectiveness statistic. The practical decision is therefore about organizational eligibility, administrative control, recipient experience, mobile availability, and Gmail feature limitations—not a demonstrated security ranking.
