Google Gemini and OpenAI both document ways to check for AI-related signals, but neither offers a universal test for every image generator. Gemini Apps adds an invisible SynthID watermark and C2PA provenance metadata to AI media it creates or edits; its verification check looks for Google AI signals. OpenAI documents checks for C2PA credentials and SynthID, with coverage limited to supported signals. A visible logo or overlay is a separate feature from either of these machine-readable signals.
What “watermark” can mean
People use “watermark” for several different things. Separating them makes a verification result easier to interpret.
- Visible overlay: Text or a logo viewers can see on the image. It can identify or brand content, but it is not the same as an invisible watermark or provenance record.
- Embedded watermark: A signal embedded in media, such as Google’s SynthID, that compatible software can check. It is designed to be imperceptible to viewers.
- Provenance metadata: Information attached to a file, such as C2PA Content Credentials, which can record origin, AI involvement, and editing context. Metadata can be removed or become unavailable when a file is changed or shared.
Gemini and OpenAI compared
This comparison covers only the behavior documented by Google and OpenAI in the cited sources. It does not establish what other image generators do.

How to check an image with Gemini
- Upload the image to Gemini.
- Ask whether Google AI created or edited it. Google’s instructions describe this as a check for Google AI signals, not a general verdict on whether any AI system made the image. Google Gemini Apps Help.
- Read the result as one piece of evidence: Gemini may detect SynthID, summarize compatible Content Credentials, or say the result is unclear.
Google says Gemini supports Content Credentials version 2.2 and later from products on the C2PA Conforming Products List. Credentials from unsupported products may not be treated as valid or trusted. What a result does—and does not—tell you
If Gemini detects SynthID
Google says a detection means all or part of the image or video was created or edited by Google AI models. It supports a Google AI connection; it does not, by itself, establish the full creation or editing history.
If Gemini finds no SynthID
That means the check did not identify Google AI creation or editing. It does not mean the image is human-made: it could come from another AI system, or the signal may not be available or detectable.

If Gemini says the result is unclear
Google identifies cases where content is too simple to watermark or an edit is too small to detect. An inconclusive result is not a positive or negative classification.
If Content Credentials are present
Credentials can add useful context about origin and edits, but they are not a standalone AI detector. They may also be unavailable, incompatible, or separated from the media file.

Google’s help page puts the coverage boundary plainly: “While other companies have started to adopt SynthID watermarks, Gemini can currently only recognize content created by Google AI tools.” Google Gemini Apps Help.
What to know about SynthID and C2PA
SynthID is an embedded watermark
Google DeepMind describes SynthID as an imperceptible watermark embedded directly in AI-generated media. For images and video, Google says it is added when content is created and does not change image or video quality. It is designed to withstand some common modifications, but no watermark should be treated as impossible to degrade or remove. Google DeepMind.

SynthID Text is a separate technology. Google’s text documentation describes probabilistic detection and limits involving rewriting and translation; those text-specific properties should not be assumed to describe image watermarking. Google AI for Developers.
C2PA records provenance context
Content Credentials are based on the C2PA standard and can carry signed provenance information, including details about origin and edits. They answer a different question from an embedded watermark: they provide context recorded with the file, rather than simply signaling that a watermark pattern is present. As with other metadata, credentials are useful only when the file retains compatible information and the checker can validate it.

OpenAI’s documented approach is evolving
OpenAI’s provenance documentation describes checks for C2PA credentials in images and SynthID in images and audio, while cautioning that the checks cover supported OpenAI signals rather than every AI system. OpenAI Developers.
In an update dated October 5, 2026, OpenAI said it was adding cross-platform SynthID watermarking to images through a partnership with Google and previewing public image verification. Those are OpenAI’s stated implementation plans and claims as of that announcement; they do not make the documented checks a universal AI detector.
