This is also a moving target: Google began transitioning Android mobile users from Assistant to Gemini on September 3, 2026, and said the rollout could take a few weeks. Your available choice may depend on whether the change has reached your device.
How to choose between Gemini and Google Assistant
Choose based on what you ask your phone to do—not a blanket claim that one assistant is better at everything. Gemini is built for back-and-forth requests and can work with text, voice, images, and camera input. Assistant may remain the practical choice for a familiar feature or media service Gemini does not support.

What Gemini can do that suits conversational requests
Gemini accepts text and voice, and can use images or camera input. Google describes it as useful for writing, brainstorming, learning, planning, image generation, and asking questions about what is on an Android screen. For example, a request can start with a photo or screen and continue as a conversation rather than being limited to a single command.
Gemini can also connect with supported Google apps and services. Depending on the app, account, settings, and availability, those connections can help with tasks such as summarizing Gmail, creating calendar events, finding or playing media, making calls or sending messages through supported apps, and controlling smart-home devices. Maps and YouTube are among the app connections Google identifies. These are conditional capabilities, not a guarantee that every action or connected app is enabled for every user. Which Google Assistant features may be missing in Gemini?
Google’s Gemini documentation identifies Interpreter mode and certain podcast, news, radio, and third-party music services as Assistant features that are not supported in Gemini. The affected services matter more than the category: if you rely on a particular provider or mode, check whether it works on your device before treating Gemini as a complete replacement. Gemini documentation also describes “Hey Google” and Voice Match, while noting that some familiar quick voice actions still involve Google Assistant. Those functions are not universally available: language, account eligibility, device, and settings can affect access. What Gemini can do while your phone is locked
Gemini can handle some requests on a locked phone, including general questions, alarms and timers, media controls, some phone controls, and some Maps requests. Calls and messages without unlocking require you to opt in. Requests involving personal content may still prompt you to unlock the device, and lock-screen behavior depends on your settings. Is Gemini replacing Google Assistant on Android?
Google’s August 6, 2026 announcement said removal of mobile Assistant would begin on September 3 and take a few weeks to reach everyone. It said users would eventually lose the option to switch back once Assistant access was removed. Because the rollout can be at different stages, the announcement does not establish that every Android user has already transitioned.

The announced change also covers paired Wear OS watches, compatible headphones, and Android Auto projected from a phone. Google distinguished those from Google Home and Nest speakers and displays, which the announcement said were not affected, and cars with Google built-in, where Assistant would continue beyond September 3, 2026. Can you switch back to Google Assistant?
Google’s current Gemini help page documents a way to switch from Gemini to Assistant, but the September 2026 transition announcement says switching back will eventually stop being possible after Assistant is removed for a user. The help-page steps may therefore no longer work once the rollout reaches your device. Check the Gemini app and Android’s default-assistant setting rather than assuming either option is available everywhere.

- Check the Gemini app: Open Gemini, tap your profile picture, and look for the option to switch to Google Assistant. The option and labels may differ by device and rollout stage.
- Check Android’s default: Open Settings → Apps → Default apps → Digital assistant app and review the assistant choices shown. Settings labels can vary by manufacturer and Android version.
Deleting the Gemini app does not, by itself, remove Gemini as the default assistant. Google documents these management details here: Manage or delete the Gemini app on Android.

Gemini mobile app availability and features depend on device, country, language, account type, and settings. Some supervised accounts and work or school account situations have restrictions, and Android work profiles are not supported for the Gemini mobile app. If the app or an expected feature is missing, eligibility or rollout status may be the reason rather than a problem with the phone. Does Gemini work with Android Auto or headphones?
Google’s mobile transition announcement includes Android Auto projected from a phone and compatible headphones among the affected connected experiences. Android Auto’s help page describes both Gemini and Assistant, but that general guidance does not guarantee both choices remain available to every user during the rollout. For headphones, the announcement concerns compatible devices; it does not establish that every headset supports Gemini. Check the options on the connected device and the current Android Auto guidance for your region and setup.
This mobile transition is separate from Google Home and Nest speakers and displays, and from cars with Google built-in: Google’s announcement said those were not affected in the same way, with Assistant continuing in built-in cars beyond September 3, 2026.
