Gemini memory lets Google’s assistant use details from past conversations and saved preferences to tailor later replies. To use it, you must be at least 18, signed in to a personal Google Account, and have Keep Activity on; work, school, and supervised accounts are excluded. You can turn memory off, delete chats, or correct a mistaken detail, though changes may take time to affect replies.
What Gemini memory does
Gemini can draw on previous conversations to make later answers more relevant—for example, by using project context when suggesting next steps or referring to past trip-planning and product-comparison discussions. You can also explicitly ask Gemini to remember preferences. Google describes this as distinct from its use of past chats: memory can use conversation history, while saved preferences are details you choose to provide.
The feature has had more than one name. Google’s February 2026 announcement referred to “Your past chats with Gemini” under Personal context. In March 2026, Google said it was renaming past chats to “memory” as it began rolling out chat imports. Older instructions or announcements may therefore use “past chats” or “Personal context” for what is now generally called Gemini memory.

Google lists the Gemini mobile app and web app, Gemini in Chrome in supported countries, and Gemini on smartwatches as places where memory is available. It is not available in some features, including Gems and Live chats. However, you can ask Gemini in a text chat to refer to a past Gemini Live conversation. See Google’s Gemini Apps Help page for the current feature details.
Availability can vary by account and location. In a February 26, 2026 announcement, Google said the rollout was reaching all users in Canada and expanding across Gemini 3 models, with broader availability expected over the following weeks. That announcement describes the rollout at that time, not a guarantee that every country or account has the same access today.

How to manage or correct what Gemini remembers
Gemini memory is controlled through settings and Gemini Apps Activity. Google’s current help page says you can turn memory on or off in Gemini settings, review and delete past chats in Gemini Apps Activity, and correct an inaccurate detail by telling Gemini directly in a chat.
Deleting a chat may not stop it from influencing personalized replies immediately; Google warns there can be a short delay. If the information came from a connected app, such as Gmail or Google Photos, delete the relevant Gemini chats and disconnect that app. Doing only one may leave the information available through the other source. Google also says changes or deletions made in a connected app may take days to affect the Gemini experience.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGoogle’s help page cautions: “While Gemini continues to improve, it might not always get it right.” Treat a personalized answer as a response to check, not proof that Gemini has correctly remembered or interpreted your context.
What Temporary Chats do differently
Temporary Chats are intended for one-off conversations. Google said at launch that they do not appear in recent chats or Gemini Apps Activity, are not used to personalize your Gemini experience, and are not used to train Google’s AI models. Google also said they are kept for up to 72 hours to respond and process feedback you choose to provide. That retention limit applies to Temporary Chats; it is not a general statement about how long all Gemini memory or account data is retained.

Importing chats and preferences from other AI apps
On March 26, 2026, Google announced two ways to bring information from other AI apps into Gemini: paste a summary of your preferences generated using a suggested prompt, or upload a ZIP file of chat history from another provider. Google said the tools were beginning to roll out to consumer accounts. Because that was a dated rollout announcement, check Gemini settings for current availability and supported archive formats rather than assuming every account can import every provider’s history.
