Neither Google Flights nor Skyscanner is proven to be consistently cheaper. The better choice depends on your route, dates, itinerary and booking provider. Google Flights clearly separates results into “Best” and “Cheapest,” while Skyscanner lets you compare airline and travel-agency options and set route-and-date alerts. Compare equivalent itineraries and check the provider’s final fare and terms before booking.
Which finds cheaper flights?
There is no established winner across routes. The official help pages describe how each service works, but they do not provide a controlled, route-by-route fare comparison showing that one is consistently cheaper. A result can also differ because of dates, stops, airports, baggage and the seller offering the fare.
Google Flights labels one group “Best” and another “Cheapest.” Google says its default results weigh price, convenience and ease of booking; as it puts it, “By default, Google shows you the flights that offer the best trade-offs between price, convenience, and ease of booking.” The “Cheapest” group prioritizes low prices and may include travel-agency fares or itineraries with trade-offs. Google explains how its Best and Cheapest fares work.
A cheaper-looking result may involve a self-transfer, a different airport for the return leg, or other itinerary complications. Consider extra time, baggage handling and ground transport before treating the lowest displayed fare as the best deal.

How the services differ
| What to compare | Google Flights | Skyscanner |
|---|---|---|
| Flight results | Separates “Best” results, which weigh price, convenience and booking ease, from “Cheapest” results, which prioritize price and may have itinerary or booking trade-offs. Google Flights fare guidance | Lets you select among airline and travel-agency booking options. Skyscanner search help |
| Price tracking | Can track a specific flight or a route. For flexible travel, “Any dates” route tracking can send email updates when the monthly minimum drops significantly; Google says it may send regular updates with the best available prices when there is no sufficiently large drop. Google Flights tracking help | Offers price alerts for a route and specific date. Its help page says you must be logged in to create one. Skyscanner price-alert help |
| Displayed price and checkout | “Cheapest” may include online travel-agency options. Check the seller’s booking page for the complete fare and terms. Google Flights fare guidance | Displayed prices include estimated taxes and charges, according to Skyscanner. The provider may add costs for luggage, seat selection, insurance or other options, so the final price can change. Skyscanner price guidance |
| Flexible searches | Supports “Any dates” route tracking. Its cheapest results may also pair different airports in the same city for outbound and return legs. Google Flights tracking help · Google Flights fare guidance | Search help covers selecting cities or airports and filtering results. Skyscanner search help |
Skyscanner’s undated company help material says it searches over 1,200 travel providers. That is a company-reported figure with no publication year stated; it does not establish that Skyscanner has broader coverage or lower fares than Google Flights on a particular route. Skyscanner overview
How to compare the same trip fairly
- Match the search. Enter the same origin and destination, travel dates, passenger count, cabin and stop limits in both services. If airports or dates are flexible, compare those options deliberately rather than mixing them into a price comparison.
- Check the itinerary, not just the fare. Compare airport codes, layover lengths and whether a connection is a self-transfer. Confirm whether you must collect and recheck baggage, and note any different airports for outbound and return flights.
- Compare the booking source and total. Open the airline or travel-agency offer and check the final price, baggage, seat costs, payment options and change or cancellation terms. A displayed fare is not necessarily the amount you will pay after selecting add-ons.
- Use alerts if timing is flexible. Set up each service’s alert for the route and dates you would actually take, then compare the itinerary and provider again when an alert arrives.
- Verify before paying. Prices and availability can change between search results and checkout. Confirm that the provider still offers the fare and that the booking conditions suit your trip.
How to track prices on each service
Google Flights: track a flight or a flexible route
Google documents tracking for a specific flight and for a route. If your dates are flexible, its “Any dates” option can track the route’s monthly minimum and email you when it drops significantly. Google says it may instead send regular updates with the best available prices when there is no sufficiently large drop. See Google’s flight and price tracking guidance.

Should you book through the airline or a travel agency?
Both services can surface booking-provider options, including travel agencies. Compare the seller’s final price and terms rather than assuming the cheapest search result is the best booking choice. Before paying, confirm baggage and seat costs, payment fees, and how changes or cancellations are handled. If a result involves a self-transfer or separate tickets, understand what happens if a delay makes you miss the next flight.
