Use an airline’s promotional emails for deals it chooses to promote, and its flight notifications for delays, cancellations, or gate changes after booking. These tools serve different purposes, so you can use more than one. Always confirm the current fare and its rules with the booking provider before paying.
What’s the difference?
“Airline fare alerts” can mean different things. Promotional fare emails advertise deals selected by an airline; operational flight notifications report changes to a booked flight. Neither is the same as Google Flights’ option to monitor prices for a searched route or itinerary.
| Option | What it monitors | When it is useful | Setup and scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Flights price tracking | Prices for a route on selected dates, a specific flight, or a route with “Any dates” selected | Before booking, while comparing prices or waiting for a suitable fare | Sign in to a Google Account and track a search. Google documents email updates for significant price changes, but not an alert for every movement. |
| Airline promotional fare emails | Promotional offers the airline chooses to send | When you want to hear about the carrier’s advertised deals | Depends on the airline’s email program and offer coverage. Delta, for example, describes weekly email fare specials and Web Fares; that is not evidence of a universal itinerary-tracking feature. |
| Airline operational notifications | Flight-status changes such as delays, cancellations, departure reminders, or gate changes | After booking, especially on travel day | Depends on the airline’s service and account or notification preferences. American Airlines’ BeNotified is for operational updates, not fare drops. |
When should you use Google Flights?
Choose Google Flights when you want to watch a fare for a planned route, a specific flight, or dates that remain flexible. Google’s Track flights & prices help page explains how to track a route or flight for chosen dates and how to select “Any dates” for flexible plans. Google says, “When the price for a flight or route you’re tracking changes significantly, you can get email updates.” That is a product description, not a promise to report every fare movement or deliver an instant email.
Google also documents notifications about likely price increases and fares that may soon expire. To track prices, you need to sign in to a Google Account, as noted on Google Flights’ tracked-prices page. Manage your saved searches there or through the tracking controls described in Google’s help page.

Choose specific dates when your schedule is set
If you know when you want to travel, track the route for those dates or follow a particular flight. This keeps the alert tied to the itinerary you are considering rather than to a general promotional email.
Choose “Any dates” when your schedule is flexible
If you can travel at different times, Google’s flexible-date tracking can help you monitor a route without committing to a single date range. You will still need to check the dates, flight details, and fare conditions for any price that interests you.

When are airline fare emails or flight alerts more useful?
Promotional emails: for carrier-selected deals
Sign up for an airline’s promotional emails if you want to see offers that carrier elects to promote. Delta’s Fares & Discounts page describes weekly email fare specials and Web Fares. That example does not establish that every airline provides personalized alerts for a route or itinerary you specify; check the current program and the routes or offers it covers.
An email promotion is an invitation to check a fare, not confirmation that the fare remains available. The price and conditions may change before you book.

Operational notifications: for a trip you have booked
Use an airline’s flight notifications for travel updates, not to watch for a cheaper ticket. American Airlines’ BeNotified flight alerts and updates describes notifications such as delays, cancellations, departure reminders, and gate changes for eligible AAdvantage members. Check the airline’s current eligibility and account requirements when setting it up.
Can you use both?
Yes. Use Google Flights to compare prices before buying, then enable the airline’s operational notifications for the flight you book. The combination covers two distinct needs: fare monitoring during planning and status updates during travel. Promotional emails are optional if you also want to hear about the carrier’s advertised offers.

What to verify before booking
- Current availability: A tracked price or promotion may no longer be available when you reach checkout. American Airlines notes that fares update regularly, vary with route, date, demand, and availability, and may not remain available at booking on its Find Flight Deals and Fares by Destination page.
- Fare rules: Check change, cancellation, refund, and baggage conditions with the airline or booking provider before paying. A lower price does not by itself entitle you to a refund or a free change.
- Price alert expectations: Google describes emails for significant changes, not every change. No universal comparison establishes that Google or airline emails are faster, cover more fares, or produce greater savings.
Google’s 2024 guide to travel-saving tools also describes monitoring an exact itinerary after booking when the fare is refundable. Treat that as a way to watch for a change, not a guarantee of a rebooking right: confirm the applicable terms with your airline or booking provider.
