The better choice depends first on your child’s devices. Google Family Link supervises a Google Account on supported Android devices and Chromebooks; most of its supervision tools do not work on iPhones, iPads, or ordinary computers. Apple Screen Time is managed through Family Sharing and a child’s Apple account, and its family controls depend on compatible Apple devices and software. Neither is a universal control panel for every device or app a child uses.

What you need to set up each system
Google Family Link
Family Link requires a parent Google Account and a child Google Account. Google’s setup instructions describe the parent app and supervised-device requirements; the exact device and account eligibility should be checked against Google’s current guidance for your country and devices. Get started with Family Link
Signing a child into Google on an iPhone, iPad, or ordinary computer does not bring the Android and Chromebook supervision controls along. Google explicitly lists those devices as outside most Family Link supervision tools. A Google account may still be used on them, but that is not the same as Family Link managing the device.
Apple Screen Time
Family-managed Screen Time requires Family Sharing and a child’s own Apple account. Apple’s setup page, published September 14, 2026, says the updated parental-control experience requires family devices to run iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, or visionOS 27. If the family cannot update every device, Apple says it can continue with the previous experience or adjust controls directly on the child’s device. Set up parental controls

Apple notes that not every control is available on every device. Some defaults are enabled or cannot be removed depending on the child’s age and jurisdiction, so check the current settings shown for the family’s actual devices and location.
How screen-time limits and schedules differ
Family Link: daily limits, app limits, and schedules
Family Link provides daily device limits and individual app time limits, alongside Downtime and School time schedules. Parents can also allow unlimited apps or add bonus time where the controls support it. App limits are not available for system apps. Google documents Android 7+ or ChromeOS 83+ for some app-limit features, and Android 7+ for schedules; check the current feature requirements before relying on a particular control. Screen Time: allowances, scheduled time, and always-allowed choices
Apple organizes limits as Time Allowances, app or category limits, schedules, and always-allowed apps or contacts. Do not assume a scheduled block works exactly like a Family Link limit: Apple’s schedule guidance distinguishes the schedule from whether blocking is enabled, and its controls can differ by software version and device. Review the blocking option on the child’s device or family settings rather than relying on the schedule name alone. Apple’s schedule instructions
Apps, purchases, and web filtering are platform-specific
Google Play and Chrome
Family Link can approve or block Google Play apps, set maturity restrictions, and manage purchase approval for transactions using Google Play billing. Those controls do not establish approval for purchases made through other billing systems or stores. Manage Google Play apps

Chrome controls can allow or block sites, restrict browsing to approved sites, and apply an explicit-site filter. Google cautions, “No filter is perfect, but this should help hide sexually explicit sites.” That is a limit on what the filter promises, not a guarantee that every browser, app, or website on a device is covered. Apple app, web, and content restrictions
Screen Time includes app and website access rules, Ask to Browse, media age ratings, and content and privacy restrictions. These settings are controls within Apple’s supported devices and services; they should not be treated as a single filter for every third-party app, browser, or service. Communication, location, and what parents can see
Communication and sensitive-media safety
Apple documents the ability to choose who a child may communicate with in supported apps, plus Communication Safety. The latter checks certain sensitive images or videos on-device and can provide guidance. Apple says it does not get access to the photos or videos checked by Communication Safety; that is a statement about this feature, not Apple’s overall data practices.
The Google sources cited here document Google-account supervision, app and web controls, and permissions, but do not establish a directly equivalent system-wide contact-management or sensitive-media feature. That source distinction is not proof that Google offers no relevant safeguards in any individual service.

Location and activity visibility
Google documents location checking for supervised Android devices. It says Chromebook location reporting is not available, and its app-activity visibility applies in specified Android and Chromebook contexts. Do not assume the same location or activity view exists for every device a child uses. Google’s supported-device guidance
Apple Family Sharing supports location sharing and finding family devices. That is a family location feature, distinct from Screen Time’s usage reports and restrictions; the reviewed Apple Screen Time material does not establish a like-for-like accuracy comparison with Google. How Family Sharing works
Which one fits your household?
- Choose Family Link as the main built-in control when the child’s supervised devices are supported Android phones or tablets, or Chromebooks, and you want Google-account, Play, Chrome, location, and time controls within those contexts.
- Choose Screen Time as the main built-in control when the child uses Apple devices managed through Family Sharing and you want Apple’s time, content/privacy, communication, or Communication Safety controls.
- For a mixed-device household, map each device separately. A built-in control may cover only part of a child’s device use: Family Link’s tools do not carry over wholesale to iPhones or ordinary computers, while Apple family controls depend on Apple devices and compatible software.
- Check account age, region, and OS before configuring limits. Google says account age thresholds depend on country; Apple says defaults and some available controls depend on age and jurisdiction.
Neither system is a universal winner. The practical choice is the one that covers the child’s actual devices and the particular controls your family needs.
