Google Docs supports selected Markdown formatting and ways to move content between Docs and Markdown files. Dedicated editors such as Visual Studio Code and Obsidian put Markdown source, preview modes, or project tools more at the center of writing. The key difference is the workflow: Docs is a word processor with Markdown features, while Markdown editors vary in how directly they expose and manage Markdown.
Does Google Docs support Markdown?
Yes, but Google documents specific Markdown features—not full support for every Markdown dialect or editor workflow. In Google Docs, you can use selected Markdown syntax to format content, paste Markdown as formatted content, copy selected content as Markdown, and download a document as a Markdown file. Google’s instructions for these features are in Use Markdown in Google Docs, Slides, & Drawings.
To turn Markdown formatting on or off, use Tools → Preferences in Docs. The documented formatting includes italics, bold, strikethrough, links, and headings up to six levels. These capabilities help when drafting or exchanging content, but they do not make a Google Doc equivalent to a dedicated Markdown editor.
Markdown formatting in a Google Doc
This workflow starts with a Google Doc. You can type supported Markdown syntax to apply formatting, or use the paste, copy, and download actions to transfer content between Docs and Markdown. The result is useful if your main document is a Google Doc and you occasionally need Markdown input or output.

Editing a Markdown file in Docs
This is a separate workflow: open an existing .md or .markdown file in Google Docs and edit it there. Google says the file remains a Markdown file rather than being converted into a Google Docs file. Docs provides a formatted editing environment, along with sharing and comments. Details are in Google’s guide to viewing and editing Markdown files in Google Docs.
Can Google Docs open and edit .md files?
Yes. Docs can open and edit Markdown files while retaining the .md file type. That can suit collaborators who prefer a familiar word-processing interface, especially when they need to comment or share work through Google’s document environment.

Some Docs-specific formatting does not carry over cleanly. Google notes that smart chips can become text or links, web formatting (HTML) becomes plain text, and font colors, highlights, and text alignment are removed. If the file contains those elements, review the edited result rather than assuming they will be preserved.
Can I export a Google Doc as Markdown?
Yes. Google documents a Markdown download option for Google Docs files, and its help page says, “You can export the document as Markdown for use in another application.” You can also copy selected Docs content as Markdown or paste Markdown into a document. These options are useful for exchanging content; they do not establish that every Docs feature or formatting detail has a Markdown equivalent.

What’s different about using a Markdown editor?
“Markdown editor” does not describe one standard set of features. Visual Studio Code and Obsidian illustrate two distinct approaches, and both differ from Docs’ word-processing and collaboration model.
Visual Studio Code: source, preview, and project workflow
Visual Studio Code (VS Code) is built around editing Markdown source files. Its Markdown documentation describes a rendered preview that can appear beside the source and update as you edit, synchronized scrolling, a heading-based outline, and preview options for Markdown diffs. VS Code also documents Git and source-control features such as reviewing changes and committing them. These tools fit writing that is part of a local project or version-controlled repository; they are not the same as Google Docs sharing and comments. Obsidian: reading and editing modes with extensions
Obsidian offers reading and editing views, including Live Preview and Source mode. Its Markdown documentation says it supports CommonMark and GitHub Flavored Markdown, along with Obsidian-specific syntax. Application-specific extensions can affect portability: a feature that renders in Obsidian may not render the same way in another Markdown application. If you plan to move a document, check that its syntax works in the destination renderer.

These are practical matches, not exclusive capabilities: the right choice depends on the features your document and collaborators actually need.
How to avoid formatting surprises
- Clarify the file workflow. Decide whether you are applying Markdown formatting inside a Google Doc, exporting Docs content as Markdown, or editing a Markdown file that remains
.md. - Check Docs-specific formatting. If a Markdown file uses smart chips, HTML formatting, font colors, highlights, or text alignment, inspect it after editing in Docs.
- Check editor-specific syntax. If a file uses Obsidian-specific extensions, verify how they appear in the application where someone else will read it.
- Pick tools for the collaboration model. Docs sharing and comments, and VS Code’s Git-based review and commits, solve different collaboration needs.
