Google Docs supports several Markdown workflows: paste Markdown as formatted Docs content, copy Docs content as Markdown, download a document as a .md file, or edit an uploaded Markdown file while it remains a Markdown file. Choose based on whether you want a Google Doc or need to keep working with the original .md format.
Choose the right Markdown workflow
| What you want to do | Use this workflow | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Turn Markdown text into formatted content in a Google Doc | Paste from Markdown | Converted Docs content |
| Keep editing an uploaded Markdown file as Markdown | Open the .md file in Markdown mode |
The file remains a Markdown file, not a Google Docs file |
| Take content out of Docs as Markdown | Copy as Markdown or download as .md |
Markdown text or a downloadable Markdown file |
Google’s instructions cover these workflows on a computer. The options appear after Markdown is enabled in Docs. See Google’s Use Markdown in Google Docs, Slides & Drawings and View and edit Markdown (.md) files in Google Docs.

- Upload the
.mdfile to Google Drive. - Open the file in Docs. Google’s help describes opening it from Docs with File > Open > Upload, or uploading it to Drive and choosing Open with > Google Docs.
In this mode, the file remains a .md file; it does not convert into a Google Docs file. Google warns that some Docs features may change while editing it. Smart chips can become text or links, web formatting (HTML) becomes plain text, and font colors, highlights, and text alignment are removed. Google recommends using File > Version history to restore the original if needed. These details are in its Markdown-file editing help.

What Markdown formatting does Google Docs support?
Google’s help lists italics, bold, strikethrough, links, and headings. It documents up to six heading levels. To create a heading, start at the beginning of a paragraph, type one to six # characters, add a space, and then enter the heading text.
Google’s published instructions do not provide an exhaustive compatibility matrix for every Markdown dialect, extension, or construct. If a document depends on complex formatting or embedded content, check the resulting file in the application where it will be used; do not assume every feature will carry across unchanged.
