Google documents voice search on a computer through Google Search in a desktop browser: open Google.com and click the microphone in the Search bar. The Google app for desktop is a separate Windows application whose documented search workflow uses typed queries; its current help does not describe voice search in the app. That is a difference in documented workflows, not proof that voice input is technically impossible in the app.
At a glance: app versus browser
| What you need | Google app for desktop | Google Search in a desktop browser |
|---|---|---|
| Where to start | Launch the Windows app; Alt + Space is one documented shortcut. | Open Google.com and click the microphone button in the Search bar. |
| Documented search input | Type a query, select a suggestion if useful, and press Enter. | Click the microphone and speak a query. |
| Documented scope | Web, Google Drive, local files and apps, plus AI Mode, Lens and screen-sharing features. | A spoken query sent to Google Search. |
| Microphone setup | The app’s cited help does not describe a voice-search setup. | Browser site permission, computer microphone permission and the selected input device may matter. |
| Availability | Windows 10 or later. AI Mode is not supported for all accounts, countries and languages. | Google documents the desktop browser workflow; the cited instructions do not specify an additional browser-specific eligibility limit. |
Google’s Google app for desktop help describes the app’s typed-query workflow. Google’s Chrome features page describes voice search on a computer as opening Google.com and clicking the microphone button.
How to use voice search in a desktop browser
- Open Google.com in your desktop browser.
- Click the microphone icon in the Search bar.
- When prompted, allow the site to use your microphone, then speak your query.
Google presents this as a way to ask questions, look up definitions or identify a song. It is a spoken Google Search query, not necessarily a hands-free command to Google Assistant.
What the Google app for desktop does instead
The Google app for desktop is a Windows application, not another name for Google Search in Chrome. Its help describes typing in the app’s search box, choosing a suggestion if desired, and pressing Enter. Other documented tools include searching Google Drive and local files or apps, using AI Mode, searching with Lens, and sharing the screen for a search.

Why browser voice search may not hear you
Microphone access can depend on both browser permission and the computer’s own privacy settings. Chrome also lets you choose which microphone is used by default. Check these in order:

- Allow microphone access for Google Search. In Chrome, review the site’s microphone permission and allow access if it is blocked.
- Check the operating system. Confirm the computer’s privacy settings allow microphone access for the browser.
- Select the right input. In Chrome’s microphone settings, choose the intended default device if more than one is available.
Chrome’s instructions are in Use your camera and microphone in Chrome. A working built-in microphone may be enough; a separate desktop microphone is only an option if you need another input device.
Search microphone versus Google Assistant
Clicking the microphone in Google Search starts voice input for Search; it should not be treated as a general Assistant command button. In a January 2024 announcement, Google said the Google app microphone icon would trigger Search results, while Assistant could still be activated through other methods. See Google’s Assistant update.

What Google’s audio-history setting controls
Google’s optional Voice and Audio Activity setting concerns audio from Google Assistant interactions. Google says it is off unless enabled; when enabled, Assistant audio recordings can be saved with Web & App Activity. Turning the setting off does not delete recordings already saved, which can be deleted separately. Google also notes that settings are rolling out gradually, so account screens may differ.
This setting should not be read as a control for every browser Search voice interaction: Google’s description specifically concerns Assistant interactions. Details are in Manage audio recordings in your Web & App Activity.

Do not apply Android availability rules to desktop search
Google’s Android Voice Search instructions include language, country and region qualifications for that mobile feature. Those conditions are specific to the Android instructions and should not be assumed to describe the desktop browser microphone workflow. Google documents the desktop browser method separately on its Chrome features page. For Android-specific details, see Use Google Voice Search on Android.
