Google has not introduced a single flat-price Google Cloud Storage plan that makes every bill predictable. Cloud Storage remains usage-based: storage class, bucket location, operations, retrieval, replication and network transfer all affect the total. Recent Google notices describe separate pricing events—not one new plan—including staged Cloud Storage changes in 2022–2023, newly metered BigQuery-related charges from February 21, 2025, and multi-region transfer fees announced for February 1, 2026.

What Google actually changed

The headline “new pricing plan” is misleading if it implies a fixed monthly Cloud Storage subscription. Google’s published material documents several distinct adjustments and billing notices.

Effective date Change What it applies to
October 1, 2022 Initial updates to selected new products and SKUs. Products and SKUs identified in Google’s pricing announcements.
April 1, 2023 Later changes to existing products and SKUs after Google extended preparation time. Affected existing Cloud Storage pricing components.
February 21, 2025 BigQuery users began seeing Cloud Storage retrieval charges for Nearline, Coldline and Archive data, plus inter-region transfer charges, after a billing bug had prevented metering. BigQuery reads involving those Cloud Storage classes and regions.
February 1, 2026 Multi-region network transfer fees apply when a BigQuery job reads from a Cloud Storage multi-region bucket. BigQuery imports from Cloud Storage multi-region buckets.

The 2025 notice concerns retrieval and inter-region transfer. The 2026 notice concerns multi-region network transfer. They should not be treated as one fee or one product launch.

Why a storage-only estimate is often wrong

Google groups Cloud Storage charges into data storage, data processing, network usage and Anywhere Cache. Data processing can include operation charges, applicable retrieval fees and inter-region replication. The applicable rate depends on the storage class, bucket location, destination and actual usage.

Storage class and retention

Standard, Nearline, Coldline and Archive classes have different storage and retrieval economics. A colder class can reduce at-rest cost but add retrieval charges when data is read. Select a class using expected access frequency and retention, not the storage rate alone.

Operations

Requests are billed by operation category. High request volume can materially change a bill even when the stored byte count is modest. Workloads with many object listings, metadata calls, uploads or downloads should estimate Class A and Class B operations separately.

Replication and location

Replication can add charges, and location affects both resilience and transfer pricing. Google notes that a region and a multi-region are not treated as the same location merely because the region lies geographically inside the multi-region.

Network movement

Data sent to other services, regions or destinations may incur transfer fees. BigQuery jobs are especially sensitive to the relationship between the bucket’s location and the BigQuery dataset location.

Current Always Free Cloud Storage allowance

Google’s current documentation lists these Always Free limits, subject to eligibility and location restrictions:

  • 5 GB-months of Standard storage.
  • 5,000 Class A operations.
  • 50,000 Class B operations.
  • 100 GB of data transfer each month from North America to each qualifying Google Cloud data-transfer destination, with stated exceptions.

The allowance applies in us-west1, us-central1 and us-east1, aggregated across those regions. Google says limits may change. These are service allowances, not a guarantee that a project’s total bill will be zero.

Google’s illustrative bill

One Google pricing example totals $1.19 for a month for 50 GB of Standard storage in us-east1, 10,000 Class A operations, 50,000 Class B operations and 1 GB of outbound transfer, assuming no Always Free discounts. It is an illustrative calculation for that exact workload, not a universal monthly quote.

The example demonstrates why multiplying stored gigabytes by a storage rate can understate the bill: requests and transfer are included alongside storage.

How to estimate your own Cloud Storage cost

  1. Define the workload. Record stored data, monthly growth, average retention, reads and writes, object count, request volume, retrieval volume and expected transfer destinations.
  2. Choose candidate classes and locations. Compare Standard, Nearline, Coldline or Archive against access frequency, resilience requirements and minimum-retention rules. Record whether the bucket is regional, dual-region or multi-region.
  3. Map connected services. Identify BigQuery datasets, compute jobs, replication targets and external destinations. Check whether data crosses regions or leaves Google Cloud.
  4. Inspect actual billing data. In Google Cloud Billing, use Billing Reports or Cost Table, group by SKU and filter to the relevant products and date range. This reveals the SKUs that generated charges instead of relying on a storage-only estimate.
  5. Model changes before deploying them. Estimate the effect of request-volume increases, colder-class retrievals, replication and transfers. Recheck the live regional pricing table because rates and allowances can change.
  6. Check contractual discounts. Google says some customers with a fixed or floating discount commitment contract signed or renewed before October 1, 2022 may not be affected by certain changes until the contract ends. Verify the agreement and its dates rather than assuming an exemption.

Reducing BigQuery-related transfer surprises

For the February 1, 2026 multi-region transfer change, Google identifies customers importing data into BigQuery from Cloud Storage multi-region buckets as affected users. Google suggests co-locating the bucket and BigQuery data, or relocating the bucket where appropriate, as a possible way to reduce transfer costs.

Co-location is not automatically the cheapest architecture: balance transfer savings against availability, replication, compliance, latency and storage-class requirements. Confirm the exact bucket and dataset locations before moving data.

A practical comparison framework

There is no universally cheapest Cloud Storage configuration. Compare each proposed design on the following axes:

Axis Questions to answer
Storage class How often is data read, and how long must it remain available?
Location and resilience Is a region, dual-region or multi-region required for availability or disaster recovery?
Retrieval Will colder data be read often enough for retrieval fees to dominate savings?
Operations How many Class A and Class B requests will applications generate?
Replication Will replication create additional processing or transfer charges?
Destinations Where do users and services read the data, and how much crosses locations?
BigQuery alignment Are the bucket and BigQuery dataset locations compatible with the workload?
Commitments Do discounts or contracts alter when a pricing change reaches the account?

Cloud Storage is not Google Drive

Cloud Storage is Google Cloud infrastructure billed by storage and usage. Consumer Google Drive and Google One plans are separate products with different pricing and allowances. A Google One subscription does not cap a Cloud Storage project’s operations, retrieval or network charges.

What to watch on your bill

  • Unexpected retrieval line items after reading Nearline, Coldline or Archive objects.
  • Inter-region or multi-region network transfer associated with BigQuery jobs.
  • Operation charges rising faster than stored data.
  • Replication or cache-related processing charges.
  • Location changes that alter transfer eligibility or rates.

Use the SKU-level view in Billing Reports or Cost Table to connect each line item to a service action. For current rates, consult Google’s live Cloud Storage pricing documentation for the specific class, region, destination and billing date.
