Google Cloud does not have one current MFA deadline for every account. Its documentation calls the requirement 2-step verification (2SV) and sets dates by account type: some deadlines began in 2025, while qualifying non-SSO enterprise accounts have deadlines in 2026. Federated enterprise accounts have no date announced on the current documentation page.

When does Google Cloud require MFA?

Google’s current schedule is based on account type and, for some enterprise accounts, when the organization was created. The dates below come from Google Cloud’s 2-step verification requirement documentation.

Account type Requirement timing
Personal Google Account used as a principal in Google Cloud Started on or after May 12, 2025
Reseller account Started on or after April 28, 2025. Reseller end users are not affected by this reseller-account requirement.
Enterprise Cloud Identity account without SSO; organization created before August 3, 2026 Starts on or after October 20, 2026
Enterprise Cloud Identity account without SSO; organization created on or after August 3, 2026 Starts 30 days after organization creation
Enterprise account using federated authentication, including Google Workspace SSO, Cloud Identity SSO, or Workforce Identity Federation Date to be announced

The 2025 date in the original headline reflects Google’s first public rollout plan, not a universal present-day deadline. In a November 4, 2024 Google Cloud Blog announcement, VP of Engineering and Distinguished Engineer Mayank Upadhyay wrote: “We will be implementing mandatory MFA for Google Cloud in a phased approach that will roll out to all users worldwide during 2025.” The current documentation gives later dates for certain enterprise accounts and lists no date yet for federated accounts.

Does the Google Cloud MFA requirement affect my account?

When the requirement applies to an account, its user must enable 2SV to access the Google Cloud console or Firebase console. A user without 2SV is prompted to set it up before continuing.

The rule applies to console access, not to applications or workloads running on Google Cloud. Google describes this as a control-plane requirement; the data plane is not affected. The documented requirement also does not apply to Workspace services such as Gmail, Drive, Sheets, and Slides, or to YouTube. Workspace may impose a separate 2SV requirement.

Do I need MFA for gcloud CLI?

There is no separate 2SV requirement for the gcloud CLI. However, the account’s normal sign-in flow may ask for a second factor after 2SV is enabled. The console requirement should not be confused with a change to authentication requirements for running cloud workloads.

Which second factors can I use?

For personal Google Accounts and enterprise accounts that use Google as their identity provider, Google lists authenticator apps, Google Prompts, backup codes, physical security keys, and SMS as additional factors. The available choices can depend on the account’s identity setup. Google’s 2-Step Verification help page explains the setup options.

Can I use a security key?

Yes. Google lists physical security keys as an option for personal accounts and enterprise accounts using Google as the identity provider. A key is an optional method, not a requirement for every user; the other listed factors are alternatives. Choose a method your organization supports and make sure users have a practical recovery option.

What if I use passkeys or a third-party identity provider?

Having passkeys does not by itself satisfy the documented requirement: Google says users must still enable 2SV and add an authentication factor. If an account relies on a third-party identity provider for SSO, that provider’s 2SV can be used to comply with the Google Cloud requirement.

What if I cannot find the 2-Step Verification setting?

Google says an administrator might have disabled the setting. Contact the account or organization administrator rather than assuming the account is exempt.

How should I handle backup codes?

Google describes backup codes as single-use. Store them securely and use them only when another method is unavailable.

What can enterprise administrators do?

For non-SSO Enterprise Cloud Identity organizations, Google documents conformance monitoring, a one-time extension for eligible organizations, and an organization-level opt-out. These controls should be considered in light of the organization’s account cohort and identity-provider configuration.

  • Request an extension: Eligible organizations created before August 3, 2026 can use a one-time 90-day extension. Google identifies an Organization Administrator as the role that performs the extension.
  • Opt out: An Organization Administrator can opt the organization out. Google does not recommend opting out. The choice bypasses the requirement but does not disable 2SV for users who already enabled it.
  • Opt back in: Returning to the requirement triggers a minimum 30-day grace period.

Before communicating a deadline, administrators should confirm whether the organization uses SSO, when it was created, and which account cohort is covered. Google’s current dates—not the broad 2024 announcement—are the appropriate basis for that decision.
