Google introduced Gemini CLI extensions on October 8, 2025, giving developers an open framework for adding external services and other customizations to its command-line AI agent. An extension can bundle more than a connection to a tool: it can also include prompts, commands, themes, hooks, sub-agents, and agent skills. You can install one from GitHub or a local path with gemini extensions install <source>.
What are Gemini CLI extensions?
Gemini CLI extensions are packages that customize the command-line agent and connect it to services developers use. Google describes them as a layer that can add instructions and workflow-specific features around a tool connection. As Taylor Mullen, a senior staff software engineer at Google, put it in the launch announcement: “While MCP provides the raw connection to a tool, a Gemini CLI extension takes the basic ability to use that tool and wraps it in a layer of intelligence and personalization.”
Current documentation lists these possible components:
- Prompts
- MCP servers
- Custom commands
- Themes
- Hooks
- Sub-agents
- Agent skills
Because an extension can combine several components, it can package a reusable workflow rather than just expose a single service. The exact contents depend on the extension.

Which third-party extensions work with Gemini CLI?
In its October 8, 2025 announcement, Google named Dynatrace, Elastic, Figma, Harness, Postman, Shopify, Snyk, and Stripe among the launch partners. The post discussed examples spanning application monitoring, search and analysis of Elasticsearch data, design, API work, commerce, security, and payments. These are historical launch examples, not a complete or necessarily current list of extensions. Google’s launch announcement provides the context for those named integrations; check the extension gallery for what is currently listed.
Google also said that, three months after Gemini CLI launched, more than one million developers were building with it. That is a company-reported figure from 2025, not an independently audited adoption count.

When choosing an extension, check which service or workflow it supports, what components it includes, where it comes from and how it is updated, and what configuration or credentials it asks you to provide. The available sources do not establish a comparative security ranking of individual extensions.

How do extensions handle configuration and credentials?
Google’s February 11, 2026 update says extension authors can define settings that users are prompted to provide during installation. Examples include API keys, base URLs, and project identifiers. Google says these values are saved securely and passed to the extension’s MCP server. That is Google’s description of the feature; it does not establish a comparative security assessment of particular extensions.
Before installing, review the extension’s source and documentation, understand which settings it requests, and confirm that the requested service and workflow are relevant to you. Google’s update describes the settings feature in its Gemini CLI update.
