Google marked Google Assistant’s fifth birthday on October 13, 2021, with a look back at how the service had grown since launch. The company also invited users to say “Hey Google, Happy Birthday” or “Hey Google, how old are you?” Google confirmed the prompts, but did not publish the exact response or report that Assistant literally ate cake.
When did Google Assistant turn five?
Google’s Assistant Team published its fifth-birthday retrospective on October 13, 2021, saying the company had launched Assistant five years earlier. The post is a company retrospective, not an independently verified launch-history account. A separate Google hardware post from October 2017 said, “Exactly one year ago today, we first introduced the Google Assistant,” but its precise publication date is not established here. The two statements are worth keeping distinct rather than treating them as a definitive chronology of Assistant’s first announcement.
The birthday wording in the headline is playful: Google suggested asking Assistant about its birthday, but did not say it literally ate cake. It also did not specify what Assistant said in reply.
What to ask Google Assistant on its birthday
Google’s anniversary post suggested these voice prompts:

- “Hey Google, Happy Birthday”
- “Hey Google, how old are you?”
The company confirmed the suggested prompts, not a particular spoken answer. The post does not establish whether those responses remain available today.
How Assistant changed between launch and the 2021 retrospective
Google’s account describes a significant expansion in availability and features. The figures below are the company’s own snapshot in October 2021; they should not be read as current totals or independently audited measurements.

| Area | Early Assistant, as described by Google | Google’s October 2021 snapshot |
|---|---|---|
| Voices | Two voices | 10 voices |
| Availability and languages | Available on Google Home speakers in the U.S.; supported English and German on Pixel phones | Available in over 90 countries and nearly 30 languages |
| Smart-home devices | Not stated in the retrospective’s early-Assistant description | Worked with more than 100 million smart-home devices |
Google also reported cumulative totals of billions of questions answered, millions of messages sent, millions of recipes made, and billions of reminders set. The post gives no exact measurement window for those claims, so they are best understood as broad company-reported milestones rather than precisely dated or independently verified counts.
Milestones Google chose to highlight
The retrospective presents a selection of product developments from Google’s perspective. It is a record of the company’s chosen milestones, not an independent evaluation of their impact.

More contextual conversations
Google said it applied BERT to Assistant conversations to help the service understand context and longer dialogs. The post identifies Dave Orr as Group Product Manager, Natural Language Processing.
Duplex for calls and reservations
Google described Duplex as a way for Assistant to call on a user’s behalf for appointments, find store hours, and make online food orders easier. Lisa Huang, Group Product Manager for Duplex, said that more than 600,000 restaurant and hair-salon reservations were made with the feature in the month before the October 2021 post. That is Google’s figure for that specific month, not a current or recurring total.
Inclusivity, privacy, and personal controls
Google’s retrospective highlighted Voice Match, Face Match, and on-device speech processing for some requests. It also described Guest Mode and voice actions for deleting recent interactions or activity from a chosen period. These are controls Google said it offered; the post does not claim that they stop all data processing.
Driving, family routines, and smart-home standards
The company also pointed to Assistant features for driving and family routines, including Family Bell, and to its collaboration on Matter, a smart-home standard. These descriptions reflect Google’s October 2021 account and should not be taken as a current feature-availability guide.

What the birthday story does—and does not—establish
Google’s post establishes how the company marked Assistant’s fifth anniversary, the prompts it suggested, and the historical milestones and figures it chose to share. It does not provide the exact birthday response, verify the reported totals independently, or establish Assistant’s availability in 2026. For a present-day feature or regional availability check, the 2021 retrospective is not enough evidence.
