The companies expect the work to add 890 megawatts (MW) of firm capacity to the PJM grid before the end of 2032. Here, “tune-up” means a nuclear uprate: upgrading an existing reactor so it can produce more power, not building a new one.
What does a nuclear reactor “tune-up” mean?
A nuclear tune-up in this announcement is a power uprate: equipment upgrades intended to increase an existing reactor’s output. Google identifies turbines, steam generators, and digital control systems as possible upgrade areas. The project concerns operating plants; it is not a plan to construct 11 new reactors. Google’s announcement describes the work as modernizing plant equipment to boost output.
What are Google and Constellation agreeing to?
The agreement pairs a long-term buyer commitment with investment in upgrades at existing nuclear facilities. Google will buy power under a 20-year power purchase agreement, which the companies say provides revenue certainty for the work. The announced scope covers 11 units at six plant sites in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Google and Constellation project that the uprates will add 890 MW of firm capacity to PJM before the end of 2032.
The 890 MW figure is the aggregate project target. The announcement does not give a reactor-by-reactor capacity breakdown, unit-level construction schedule, or allocation of upgrade costs, so the total cannot be used to infer how much additional output any one unit will provide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What is being upgraded, and what is the separate technology deal?
Physical upgrades at the plants
The equipment work is intended to raise the output of existing reactors. Google’s description names turbines, steam generators, and digital control systems. The joint announcement frames the added capacity as new supply for the PJM grid; claims that the project will benefit other grid customers should be understood as the companies’ stated rationale, not as a separately verified outcome.
Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise
Alongside the power agreement, the companies announced an expanded five-year technology alliance. Constellation plans to deploy Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise agentic workflows in its operations. Google says the intended uses include speeding uprate planning, streamlining construction, and optimizing plant output. Those are planned applications, not demonstrated results, and the announcement does not establish that Gemini Enterprise will control reactor safety systems.

How does this compare with Google’s other nuclear plans?
Google says its broader activity enabling nuclear capacity through uprates and restarts will exceed 1.5 gigawatts (GW). That is a Google-reported portfolio total, not the size of the Constellation agreement, whose target is 890 MW.
This deal is also different from Google’s October 2024 agreement with Kairos Power. The Kairos arrangement concerns planned advanced small modular reactors and targets up to 500 MW across multiple deployments. The Constellation project instead seeks additional capacity from uprates at operating plants.

What is known about the investment and jobs?
Axios reported that Constellation would invest $4.3 billion in upgrades. That amount is Axios’s reporting; it is not stated in the Google announcement. Google estimates the project will sustain roughly 4,400 existing jobs and support approximately 7,200 construction jobs. These are company estimates, not verified employment outcomes.
