Before relying on a Google AI Overview, check each important claim against the cited page and another suitable, current source. A citation is a lead to evidence—not proof that the Overview’s wording is accurate. Google itself says AI Overviews can make mistakes and recommends checking important information in more than one place.
This guide gives you a practical way to check claims, judge sources, and decide when to stop relying on a summary and consult an authoritative document or qualified professional.
What do you need before you fact-check an AI Overview?
You need the exact claim you want to verify, access to the pages linked from the Overview, and another suitable source to compare against. For rules, instructions, or eligibility requirements, look for the responsible organization’s current documentation; for a statistic, seek the original publisher and the year the figure covers.

The higher the stakes, the more important it is to confirm the details in current authoritative material.

You do not need to prove every sentence in a low-stakes summary before using it to orient yourself. You do need to verify the claims that would change what you do, what you publish, or what you tell someone else. If a single sentence bundles several facts together, check them individually rather than letting one supported detail lend credibility to the rest.
How do you check whether an AI Overview is right?
Break the Overview into individual claims, trace each one to the source text, and corroborate consequential claims independently. Use this workflow rather than treating a citation icon or a confident summary as verification.
- Write down the exact claim. Separate a sentence into checkable propositions. Note names, dates, numbers, units, places, eligibility conditions, quotations, and cause-and-effect statements. If the Overview says a program applies to a certain group from a certain date, those are separate details to verify.
- Identify what would count as support. Ask what kind of evidence the claim needs. A current rule should be checked against the organization responsible for that rule; a reported number should be traceable to the original publisher and its stated time period. A broad article about a subject may not establish a specific date or condition.
- Open the cited page itself. Do not rely only on the snippet or the Overview’s description of a link. Find the relevant passage and compare it with the Overview’s exact wording. Check whether the source supports the same claim, including its qualifiers, units, location, date, and conditions.
- Mark unsupported details. If the linked page discusses the topic but does not state the particular claim, treat that claim as unverified—not as confirmed. Also note when a source supports only part of a sentence or leaves out a caveat that changes its meaning.
- Check who published the source and when. Consider whether the publisher is positioned to know, when the information applied, and whether a newer primary document supersedes it. A source’s presence in an Overview does not mean Google certifies its accuracy or suitability.
- Look for independent corroboration. Search for the claim in different words and inspect another appropriate source. Prefer evidence that does not simply repeat the same assertion. Two pages that copy one another—or rely on the same original report—are not necessarily independent confirmation.
- Decide whether the evidence is enough for the intended use. If key details conflict, the sources are outdated, or the claim has high stakes, do not turn the Overview into an instruction. Consult the current authoritative material and, where appropriate, a qualified professional.
A simple evidence note can keep the check disciplined: record the claim, the passage or document you checked, its publisher and date, and what the passage actually establishes. You can then label the claim supported, partly supported, not addressed, or contradicted. This is especially useful if you are fact-checking several claims or need to explain your conclusion to a colleague or reader.

Use a claim-to-passage check: the relevant passage should support the specific wording in the Overview, not just mention the same topic. Compare the two closely enough to catch missing conditions, mismatched dates, or a number presented without its original context.
For example, if a summary gives an amount, check whether its cited page gives that same amount, for the same location and period, under the same conditions. If the page only describes a related policy, it does not verify the figure. If the source says a rule applies only to a particular group but the Overview omits that qualification, the summary may be materially misleading even if the source is relevant.
It can help to record each claim as supported, partly supported, not addressed, or contradicted. These labels describe what you found in the source, not a universal accuracy score for the Overview. A claim marked “not addressed” may be true, but the cited page has not established it.
Keep the distinction between a weak citation and a false claim clear. If a passage does not mention a claim, that is a reason not to rely on that citation as proof; it does not, by itself, demonstrate that the claim is false. If a passage directly conflicts with the summary, note the conflict and look for a current, authoritative source that resolves it. If it only supports one part of a compound sentence, retain that partial result instead of treating the whole sentence as confirmed.

Also check whether the evidence answers the same question. A source might describe a rule in one jurisdiction, an earlier version of a policy, or a figure for a different time period. A mismatch can make a citation unsuitable even when its wording appears related. The relevant question is not simply “Is this page about the topic?” but “Does this passage establish this exact claim for the people, place, and period being described?”

How do I verify whether a website provides accurate information?
Start by identifying the site’s publisher and purpose. Ask whether the publisher is responsible for the rule, collected the data, or has another clear basis for knowing the fact. Then inspect the specific page: look for the date or version, the population and location covered, and the original document or data behind any assertion. A polished site or a high search position is not a substitute for evidence.
Next, compare its statement with a primary source where one is appropriate. For an organization’s current requirement, that may be the organization’s own current documentation. For a reported statistic, trace the figure to the original publisher and check the year and denominator. If the page does not identify where a consequential number came from, keep looking rather than assuming the figure is confirmed.
Finally, compare the site with a second suitable source and check whether the two are genuinely independent. If both repeat the same claim from one original report, they are not two separate confirmations. If the page is undated, does not identify its scope, or conflicts with a current primary document, treat it cautiously and seek a better source. These checks apply whether you found the site through an AI Overview or ordinary search results.
Which sources should you trust when they disagree?
Choose sources based on the question, not on how many pages repeat the same answer. For what an organization currently requires or has officially announced, its own current primary document is usually the most direct evidence—provided its date, version, and jurisdiction fit your question.
For other questions, look for the source best placed to establish the fact: for example, the original publisher of a reported statistic. Check whether later material updates or corrects an earlier statement. A newer page is not automatically better if it does not address the relevant place, population, or time period.
When two credible sources conflict, compare their dates, definitions, and scope before choosing one. They may be describing different versions of a rule or using different denominators. If the discrepancy remains unresolved and the decision matters, preserve the uncertainty rather than choosing whichever result agrees with the Overview.
Different source types answer different questions. An organization’s own current document can establish what that organization says or requires, but may not settle a broader question about how a rule works in every situation. A news report may explain context, while the original document or data is still needed to verify the exact requirement or figure. Match the source to the claim and use a second source to test, not merely echo, the first.

How does an AI Overview compare with Web results and primary documents?
These options serve different purposes; none is an automatic accuracy guarantee. Google’s AI Overview is a quick summary with links, but you must check that the linked passages support the claims. The Web filter displays text-based links without AI Overviews, which can make it easier to browse ordinary results, but it does not evaluate those pages for you. A primary document is the most direct evidence of what its issuing organization said or required, as long as its date, version, and jurisdiction fit.

| Option | What it helps with | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| AI Overview | A quick orientation and links to pages that may help you investigate. | That a linked page supports every claim or that the summary preserves every qualifier. |
| Google Web filter | Viewing text-based search links without an Overview in the displayed results. | That the pages are accurate, current, or suitable for your question. |
| Authoritative primary document | Checking what the responsible organization stated or required in a particular version. | That the version, date, or jurisdiction applies to your circumstances, or that it answers questions outside its scope. |
Google Search Help recommends checking important information in more than one place, whether you start with an Overview or ordinary results. In practice, use the interface that helps you find relevant evidence, then judge the evidence itself. Switching to Web results changes what you see; it does not remove the need to check sources.
Can you use Google Search without an AI Overview?
Yes. Google’s Web filter displays text-based links without AI Overviews, which can be useful when you want to inspect ordinary search results. It does not verify those pages for you, and Google says the core AI Overview feature cannot be turned off.
Use the Web filter as a way to change what appears in the results, not as an accuracy shortcut. You still need to check who published each page, whether it is current, and whether its text supports the claim you are investigating. Google also recommends checking other Search results and trying multiple versions of a question.
Changing the phrasing can help surface documents or perspectives missed by the original query. For example, search for the responsible organization and the name of the rule, or search for a statistic alongside the publisher and year. Treat a new result as another lead to inspect—not as independent confirmation just because it appeared after a different query.
What should you do if an Overview appears wrong?
Do not pass the questionable claim along as established fact. Recheck the cited text and seek current, appropriate evidence; if the Overview remains inaccurate, Google’s help describes sending feedback with the thumbs-down control and details about the problem.
Feedback is a way to report an issue, not a guarantee that a particular result will be corrected immediately. If you need to rely on the answer now, base your decision on verified source material instead of waiting for a change to the Overview.
If the issue is a viral screenshot, do not treat the image alone as proof that a result was live or representative. In its May 2024 update about AI Overviews, Google described launch-period problems involving misunderstood queries or source language and cases involving satire or misleading forum material. Google also warned that some circulating screenshots were fabricated. Verify the result through a current search and inspect its linked material before repeating a screenshot’s claim.

An AI Overview compresses information into a generated summary, and a concise answer can leave out a qualification that matters. Google acknowledges that AI Overviews can make mistakes. Google’s Search Help states, “AI Overviews can and will make mistakes.” Its broader generative-AI help also describes possible failure modes such as invented answers and misunderstandings. These warnings are reasons to verify specific claims, not a basis for assuming that every Overview is wrong. A generated answer may be useful as a starting point while still needing evidence for the details that matter.
A 2026 preprint by Xu, Iqbal, and Montgomery assessed how extracted claims matched cited page text in a particular March–April 2026 query sample. The authors classified 11.0% of 98,020 extracted claims as inconsistent with cited pages: 4.1% were contradicted or in conflict, and 7.0% were not addressed in retrieved source text. This was an automated assessment of a specific sample, with limits from its retrieval and verification methods—not an estimate that 11% of all AI Overviews are false.
Click data should not be confused with accuracy data either. Pew Research Center reported that 1% of visits to search pages with an AI summary included a click on a link in that summary. Pew analyzed browsing data from 900 U.S. adults: the searches occurred in March 2025 and matching results were collected in April 2025. Pew cautioned that summaries can change over time. The 1% figure describes observed clicking behavior, not whether the summaries were correct.
Pew also found that 8% of visits with an AI summary included a click on a traditional result, compared with 15% of visits without one. These are observational figures, not proof that the Overview alone caused the difference. Neither click measure tells you whether an individual claim is true; for that, inspect the claim and its evidence.
When should you seek professional or primary-source advice?
Do not use an Overview as personal medical, legal, or financial instructions. For decisions in these areas, check current authoritative material and, when appropriate, consult a qualified professional who can consider your situation.
For publishing, Google Search Central’s guidance to website publishers says, “It is critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing.” That is publishing guidance, not a special AI Overview policy. The practical point is to check the underlying sources and wording before publication rather than assuming linked citations make generated material ready to publish.
For any high-stakes claim, confirm that the material is current and applies to the relevant jurisdiction or circumstances. If an official page is unclear, outdated, or appears to conflict with another authoritative source, do not resolve the issue by guessing from the Overview. Ask the responsible organization or a qualified professional when appropriate.
A quick checklist before you rely on an answer
- Have you separated the summary into specific, checkable claims?
- Does the linked passage support the exact claim, including dates, units, location, and conditions?
- Is the source authoritative for this question and current for the relevant version or jurisdiction?
- Have you checked another appropriate source that is genuinely independent?
- Are the stakes high enough to require primary documentation or professional advice?
- Have you distinguished a claim the source contradicts from one the source simply does not address?
- If you are sharing or publishing the answer, can you show where the important claims come from?
If you cannot answer these questions confidently, treat the Overview as a starting point and keep the claim unverified until you can. For consequential information, it is better to preserve uncertainty than to pass along a precise-sounding answer without support.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a citation in a Google AI Overview mean Google verified the source?
No. A linked page is a place to check the claim, not a certification that the source is accurate or that its wording supports the summary. Read the relevant passage and evaluate the publisher, date, and scope yourself.
How do I check if an AI Overview is right?
Break it into individual claims, open the cited pages, and compare each claim with the relevant passage—including dates, units, conditions, and location. Then check important claims against another suitable, current source that is not simply repeating the same assertion.
How can I verify whether a website provides accurate information?
Identify who published it and whether that publisher is positioned to know. Check the page’s date, scope, and supporting documents, compare consequential claims with an appropriate primary source, and see whether an independent source corroborates them.
Can I turn off Google AI Overviews?
Google says the core AI Overview feature cannot be turned off. Its Web filter offers text-based links without AI Overviews in the displayed results, but you still need to assess the sources those links lead to.
Is the 11% figure an AI Overview error rate?
No. It comes from a 2026 preprint’s automated assessment of claims and cited text in a particular March–April 2026 query sample. The study classified claims as inconsistent when source text contradicted them or did not address them; that is not a universal estimate of how often Overviews are false.
How do I report an inaccurate AI Overview?
Google’s help describes using the thumbs-down control and providing details about the problem. Reporting an issue does not guarantee an immediate change, so use verified source material for any decision you need to make.
Does the 1% click figure mean AI Overviews are accurate or inaccurate?
No. Pew Research Center’s 2025 figure describes observed clicks on links inside AI summaries, not factual accuracy. Click behavior cannot tell you whether a specific claim is supported.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShould I use an AI Overview for medical, legal, or financial decisions?
Do not treat it as personal instructions. Check current authoritative material and consult a qualified professional when appropriate, especially when the answer could affect an important decision.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Treat a Google AI Overview as a starting point, not a verified answer. Open the cited page, confirm the exact claim and its qualifiers, check the source’s date and authority, and corroborate consequential information independently. If the stakes are high or the evidence conflicts, rely on current primary material and qualified advice—not the summary alone.
