AI Overviews are quick AI-generated summaries within Google Search results; AI Mode is a more conversational Search experience for exploring a question in depth. You can ask follow-up questions in AI Mode, and on supported mobile devices you can continue from an AI Overview into AI Mode with your original search context. Both can make mistakes, so check their linked sources—especially before acting on important information.
What is the difference between AI Mode and AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews provide a concise, AI-generated snapshot when Google’s systems determine that a query could benefit from synthesized information. They appear within Search results and include links for further reading. AI Mode is designed for a more involved exchange: you can ask follow-up questions and explore a topic through a conversational interface. Google’s AI Overviews Help and AI Mode Help describe the two experiences.

This is a difference in purpose, not a guarantee that every query will show the same layout or that one feature is always more accurate than the other.
When should you use AI Mode instead of an AI Overview?

An Overview can help you get an initial explanation and find sources to explore. Open the linked pages when you need detail, context, or confirmation rather than treating the summary as the final word.

Use AI Mode to explore a question through follow-ups
AI Mode is a better fit when your first question leads to another—for example, when you want to compare aspects of a topic or narrow a broad question. Google says AI Mode divides prompts into subtopics and searches them simultaneously across multiple sources before assembling a response.
Can you ask follow-up questions from an AI Overview?
On supported mobile devices, Google documents a way to continue from an Overview into AI Mode. In the Google app or mobile Search, select Show more on the AI Overview, then enter a follow-up in the Ask anything bar. Google says the original search context carries over. The transition is available on mobile in regions and languages where both AI Overviews and AI Mode are supported. See Google’s AI Mode Help for current access details.

How do you open AI Mode?
Google’s Search Help describes access through Search and the Google app. On desktop, enter a question in Google Search and choose AI Mode. The exact interface and availability may vary by device, region, and language; consult Google’s current AI Mode Help if the option does not appear.
Do you need a Google AI subscription to use AI Mode?
Google does not say that a subscription is required for the basic AI Mode feature. A separate, advanced option—Gemini 3 Pro in AI Mode—is available to eligible Google AI subscribers aged 18 or older in supported countries. Google says plan availability and daily usage limits can vary or change. Check Google’s current AI Mode Help to confirm eligibility for your account and location.

Can you trust answers from AI Mode and AI Overviews?
Neither feature guarantees a correct answer. Google Search Help warns that “AI Overviews can and will make mistakes.” Its AI Mode Help says the feature may misinterpret web content or miss context, and that “As with any early-stage AI product, AI Mode doesn’t always get it right.” Follow the links in a response and compare important claims with reliable sources and other Search results. For consequential decisions, verify the information with an appropriate authoritative source rather than relying on either AI response alone.

In an announcement dated May 6, 2026, Google described a rollout of features intended to help people find original content and explore the web from AI Mode and AI Overviews. The announced features include suggestions for exploring new angles, links to news subscriptions, and previews of public discussions and firsthand sources with contextual details such as creator or community names.
