Look for the sponsorship label attached to the result. Google marks paid placements with labels such as Sponsored, Sponsored results, or Sponsored products. An organic result is a free listing shown because it is relevant to the search. Its position near an AI-generated answer does not, by itself, make it an ad.
How to tell whether a Google result is an ad
- Find the label closest to the result. Look for “Sponsored,” “Sponsored results,” or “Sponsored products.” Google says text ads on the search results page are grouped under a “Sponsored results” label, while Shopping ads use “Sponsored products.” Google’s October 2025 label announcement describes the updated text-ad label.
- Check what the label applies to. A sponsored label identifies that placement as an advertisement. Treat nearby items—such as an AI summary, a web link, or a shopping recommendation—as separate elements unless they have their own label.
- Do not use position as the deciding test. Ads can appear above or below an AI Overview, and eligible formats can appear within one. Google says a “Sponsored results” header can also appear above or below an AI Overview. Google’s announcement explains the label placement.
- If no sponsorship label is attached, do not infer an ad from proximity alone. Google defines an organic Search result as “a free listing in Google Search that appears because it’s relevant to someone’s search terms.” Google Ads Help defines organic search results separately from paid advertisements.
What “Sponsored” and “organic” mean
| What to check | Paid ad | Organic result |
|---|---|---|
| Label | May be labeled “Sponsored,” “Sponsored results,” or “Sponsored products,” depending on the format. | No sponsored label is attached to the organic listing. |
| Status | A paid advertisement; the label does not make it an organic result or an endorsement. | A free Search listing shown because Google considers it relevant to the search. |
| Position near AI | May appear above, below, or—in eligible cases—within an AI Overview. Position varies. | May be a web listing or content in or alongside an AI experience; being near AI-generated text does not make it paid. |
Google says ads within AI Overviews depend on commercial intent and relevance to both the query and the Overview. That explains why an ad may be contextually related to an answer; it does not change its paid status. Google’s AI Overview ads help page describes the placement.
Where ads can appear around Google AI features
AI Overviews
Google documents ads above or below AI Overviews and, in specified circumstances, within them. Its help page lists in-Overview ads as available in English on mobile and desktop in Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, and the United States. Availability may change, so this list should not be treated as a permanent guarantee for every user or search. See Google’s published availability details.
AI Mode
Google has also announced sponsored formats for AI Mode, but not every described format is a universal, settled layout. Its February 11, 2026 announcement described sponsored retailer formats below organic shopping recommendations as tests. Its May 20, 2026 announcement described “Conversational Discovery” ads and “Highlighted Answers,” also labeled “Sponsored.” These are announced or tested formats, not a promise that every AI Mode session will show them. Google’s February 2026 announcement and May 2026 announcement describe those formats.

Google’s documented placements and tests do not mean every person sees the same arrangement. Eligibility and appearance can depend on market, language, device, query, and rollout. A page that puts an ad in a different position from another screenshot is not necessarily evidence that the label rule has changed. Read the label attached to each item, and account for the possibility that the feature or format is not available in your location or session.
