There are documented cases of people using generative AI deceptively and of Google’s AI Overviews giving inaccurate answers. Those cases raise legitimate questions about trust, but they do not establish a current, population-wide crisis or show how often Google’s summaries are wrong. The useful distinction is between who made information, whether it is accurate, and whether it is presented in the right context.
What “Google AI manipulation” can mean
The phrase covers several different problems that should not be treated as interchangeable:
- Deceptive material made with AI: a person may use generative tools for scams, impersonation, or misleading content.
- An AI-generated answer that is wrong: a search summary may misread a question or present an inaccurate statement.
- Wider effects on information: search rankings, snippets, summaries, and the sources they draw on can influence what people see and how they interpret it.
Evidence that one of these occurs does not prove the scale of the others. In particular, examples of errors establish that errors happen; they do not establish a current error rate or show that users generally distrust Google Search.
What is documented about AI-enabled misuse
Google DeepMind reviewed nearly 200 media reports about generative-AI misuse published from January 2023 through March 2024. The examples included tactics such as impersonation and scams. The review is useful for describing reported methods, but it is not a representative count of all AI use. Its authors caution that media coverage may favor sensational incidents and that their dataset does not compare AI-enabled misuse directly with traditional manipulation. Google DeepMind’s overview of the misuse analysis therefore supports a conclusion that such tactics have been reported—not a claim about their prevalence.

A separate Google DeepMind study examined people’s ability to manipulate others in a controlled laboratory setting. The researchers warn: “The behaviors observed during this study took place in a controlled lab setting, and do not necessarily predict real-world behaviors.” It can inform questions about potential capabilities, but should not be read as a forecast of how often manipulation occurs outside the lab. Read the study overview and its limitations.
What the 2024 AI Overview errors show—and what they do not
In May 2024, the Associated Press reported specific inaccurate Google AI Overview responses, Google’s subsequent fixes, and continued expert criticism of a mushroom-identification response. These examples show that a prominent search summary can produce misleading answers and that corrections may follow public scrutiny. They do not establish how frequently errors occur now: the report was not a continuing accuracy test.

Google Search executive Liz Reid told the AP that “When AI Overviews get it wrong, it’s usually for other reasons: misinterpreting queries, misinterpreting a nuance of language on the web, or not having a lot of great information available.” This is Google’s explanation, as reported by the AP, rather than an independent finding about the causes of errors. Read the AP’s May 31, 2024 report.
What Google’s policies say about deceptive use
Google’s Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy, last modified December 17, 2024, prohibits deceptive uses that include frauds and scams, undisclosed impersonation intended to deceive, misleading claims of expertise in sensitive areas, and falsely saying generated material was created solely by a human. A written policy states what Google prohibits; it does not prove that every violation is detected or prevented.

For material appearing in Search, Google says its focus is content quality rather than authorship alone: “Our focus is on the quality of content, rather than how content is produced.” Its guidance says content created primarily to manipulate Search rankings violates its spam policy. That describes Google’s stated ranking approach, not independent validation that every result is reliable. See Google Search Central’s guidance on AI-generated content.
Why provenance is not the same as trustworthiness
Knowing that content was generated or edited with AI can help establish its provenance. It cannot, by itself, tell you whether a claim is true, complete, current, or used in the right context. Human-created content can also mislead, while an AI-assisted statement may be accurate if it is supported by reliable evidence.

Google Public Policy makes this distinction directly: “Is this AI-generated?” is not the same as “Is this trustworthy?” Its article argues for considering provenance alongside context—where material came from, how it has been handled, and what it is being used to claim. Read Google’s December 3, 2024 discussion of provenance and context.
The same article reports that 70% of respondents in a 2023 Poynter Institute MediaWise study were not totally or very confident in their ability to judge whether online images were authentic and reliable. That figure concerns confidence about online images; it is not a measure of trust in AI Overviews, AI generally, or Google Search.

How to check a Google AI Overview before relying on it
- Open the linked sources. Do not assume a source supports the whole answer. Check whether it directly supports each important claim.
- Check the date and context. Confirm when the source was published or updated, who produced it, and whether the answer reflects the source’s full meaning rather than a fragment.
- Look for provenance. Ask where the information or image came from and whether there is visible context about its origin or editing. A synthetic-media marker or AI detector may help with that provenance question, but cannot establish that a claim is true.
- Corroborate consequential claims. For high-impact questions, compare the summary with an authoritative source and an independent source. Prefer original records or guidance when available.
- Match the level of checking to the stakes. Do not rely on an AI summary alone for medical, legal, financial, civic, or safety-critical decisions; consult appropriate authoritative information or qualified help.
Search snippets, AI summaries, and original sources serve different purposes. A snippet or summary can help locate information, but the underlying material is where you can inspect evidence, date, and context. None of those formats is automatically trustworthy simply because it appears in Search or is labeled as AI-generated.
Does the evidence establish a trust crisis?
It establishes reasons for caution: reported AI-enabled scams and impersonation, examples of inaccurate AI Overviews in 2024, and Google’s stated rules against deceptive use. It does not establish a current, population-wide crisis of trust, a current AI Overview error rate, or the degree to which AI summaries have changed people’s trust in information. Those are broader claims than the documented examples and policies can support.
