Google does not offer one switch that stops all tracking. To limit account-linked activity and ad personalization, review four separate controls: Web & App Activity, Maps Timeline (formerly Location History), YouTube History, and personalized ads. Pausing a control affects future saving or personalization in that area; it does not automatically erase data already saved or stop every Google service from processing information.
How to find Google’s activity and privacy controls
Open Google Account activity controls or go to your Google Account and choose Data & privacy. Look for the history controls described below. Google says users can also reach updated privacy settings through account.google.com or current versions of its Search-service apps; labels and paths may differ by device, app version, account, or region. Follow the labels shown in your account.
For each history control, distinguish between pausing future saving and deleting information already stored. Review the available deletion or auto-delete choices separately. Google’s Safety Center describes pause and auto-delete controls for Search and browsing activity, YouTube History, and Location History.
1. Web & App Activity
Google’s Web & App Activity help page says this setting saves activity on Google sites and apps, along with associated information. That information can include location from your device’s general area and IP address. Google says activity may be used to personalize experiences.

Turn it off or review what is saved
- Open your Google Account’s Data & privacy settings, then find Web & App Activity under the history controls. You can also start from Activity controls.
- Choose the control to turn off or pause Web & App Activity, and confirm if prompted.
- Use the deletion or auto-delete options separately if you want to manage activity already saved.
Keeping it on can support more personalized Google experiences, including faster searches and recommendations. Pausing it reduces future account activity saved under this control; it is not a deletion command or a universal stop to data collection.
2. Location History and Maps Timeline
Google’s location-history control is separate from Web & App Activity. The feature is now commonly presented as Timeline in Google Maps; the name and route to it can vary. Review the Timeline or Location History control in your account or Maps settings, then pause it if you do not want future Timeline saving. Use the separate deletion controls to remove existing Timeline data.

Turning off Timeline does not necessarily remove all location information associated with your Google Account. Google Account Help warns that location data may still be saved through other Google sites, apps, and services when relevant activity settings are enabled. Web & App Activity can also include associated location information, so review that setting independently.
3. YouTube History
YouTube History has controls for both search and watch activity. Google identifies options to pause and delete YouTube Search History and Watch History; these are separate from the Web & App Activity and Timeline controls.

Pause YouTube search or watch history
- Open your Google Account’s Data & privacy page and find YouTube History among the activity controls.
- Open its controls and pause the history you want to stop saving, following the labels displayed for Search and Watch History.
- Review the deletion or auto-delete choices if you also want to manage saved history.
Pausing future YouTube history saving is distinct from deleting existing history. It changes the handling of the selected history control; it should not be treated as a blanket switch for other Google activity.

Ad personalization is controlled separately from account history. Google directs users to My Ad Center to manage information used to show ads and turn personalized ads off. Review the current controls there and change the personalization setting if that is your preference.

This setting concerns how ads are personalized. Turning it off does not mean ads disappear, and it is not a general-purpose data collection switch.

A practical review checklist
- Check Web & App Activity and decide whether its personalization benefits are worth future activity saving for you.
- Review Timeline separately; do not assume that changing it also changes location information saved through other services or activity controls.
- Choose whether to retain or pause YouTube Search History and Watch History, and manage previously saved history separately.
- Open My Ad Center independently to change ad personalization.
- Inspect deletion and auto-delete options for activity already saved, then revisit the controls periodically because interface names and paths can change.
