How high did the Gomti rise?
Hindustan Times reported a river level of 108.14 metres, against a stated normal mark of 105.70 metres. The difference is 2.44 metres, or nearly eight feet. The newspaper attributed both readings to irrigation officials. The specific 108.14-metre observation has not been independently matched to an official gauge, station, and timestamp, so it should be treated as a reported figure rather than a separately verified telemetry reading.
The comparison describes this reported event; it is not a long-term trend or a warning-threshold assessment. No current threshold comparison for the 108.14-metre reading was established.
Why did the river rise when local rain had paused?
The explanation in the Hindustan Times report was upstream runoff reaching Lucknow, rather than fresh rain in the city being the primary cause. The report named catchment areas in Lakhimpur Kheri, Pilibhit, and Sitapur. Mukesh Vaish, executive engineer for the irrigation department’s Lucknow division, told the newspaper: “Water coming from the upstream catchment areas has started reaching Lucknow, resulting in the rise in the Gomti’s water level.”

That account explains the reported timing: water generated upstream can continue moving downstream after rainfall in Lucknow has eased. It does not establish the current state of those catchments or predict how the river is behaving now.
What measures did officials take?
According to Hindustan Times, officials opened all 10 barrage gates to allow water to move downstream and closed 48 drainage outlets connected to the river to prevent river water from backing into the city’s drainage network. These are measures reported by the newspaper; the report does not independently establish their effectiveness or the resulting downstream conditions.

Is the Gomti Riverfront open?
At the time of the 3 October reports, low-lying parts of the riverfront were described as submerged and the public site as closed indefinitely. A separate report that day said ticketing had been suspended and no reopening date announced. Those are publication-time updates, not confirmation of access today. Check current Lucknow Development Authority or district notices before travelling.
What did officials expect next?
Hindustan Times reported that the irrigation department expected the river level to begin falling from Monday if upstream inflow eased. This was a conditional forecast made at the time of publication, not a confirmed later observation. It should not be read as evidence that the river has since fallen.

Where to check levels and warnings
For an up-to-date picture, distinguish an observed river reading from a forecast or warning, and check the station, location, timestamp, and any applicable threshold. The National Water Data Portal describes an hourly Uttar Pradesh Surface Water Department river-level telemetry dataset with date, station, river, and level fields. Its metadata listed an update on 28 September 2026, but the reviewed information did not identify a station record confirming the 108.14-metre figure.

- India Meteorological Department, Lucknow: the IMD lists Gomti among rivers covered by meteorological support from its Lucknow Flood Meteorological Office.
- Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner: its portal points to Central Water Commission flood forecasts, IMD, and state disaster-management and irrigation resources. It advises checking displayed information against final documents from the responsible authorities.
These channels are useful for checking current conditions, but the published 108.14-metre figure should not be assumed to match a particular official gauge unless the station and timestamp can be confirmed.
