The current GoldenEye 007 PC port brings the original Nintendo 64 game to Windows and Linux as a native build of reconstructed game source—not as an N64 emulator and not as the separate PC project based on the unreleased Xbox 360 remaster. Its v0.4.0 release adds modern display and control options and reports a 60 fps campaign; the N64 editions were designed around console-era rendering and controls, with different frame rates by region.

First, which GoldenEye PC port?

“GoldenEye on PC” can describe two different projects. The GoldenEye 007 PC Port project README says its project targets Rare’s 1997 Nintendo 64 game using reconstructed source code. It distinguishes that work from PC efforts based on machine translations of the shipped binary for the unreleased Xbox 360 XBLA remaster, which is a separate game lineage and codebase.

The port is a native host build, not the original N64 binary running in an emulator. Its game C sources are compiled for PC, while replacement services handle the functions originally tied to N64 hardware. The project’s internals documentation describes software emulation of the N64 Reality Signal Processor, with rendering sent to OpenGL; the port layer also handles video, audio, input, timers, and save storage.

How the PC port differs from the N64 versions

Area PC port Original Nintendo 64 releases
Game lineage Reconstructed source for the original N64 game, compiled as a native PC build. Original game released for Nintendo 64 in NTSC-U, NTSC-J, and PAL versions.
Display and rendering Native widescreen is listed in the project’s v0.4.0 features; rendering uses the port’s software N64 Reality Signal Processor path and OpenGL output. Designed around N64-era rendering and hardware. The available sources do not establish a level-by-level comparison of visual behavior or artifacts.
Campaign frame rate The project reports a steady 60 fps campaign in v0.4.0; this is a project statement, not an independent benchmark. The GoldenEye Depot lists 29.97 fps for NTSC and 25 fps for PAL releases. It says PAL can feel more stable because the lower rate gives the N64 more time for calculations per frame.
Aiming and controls Mouse and controller aiming, in-game key rebinding, crosshair customization, and rumble support are listed for v0.4.0. Built around the Nintendo 64 console control experience; the cited sources do not provide a directly comparable controls feature list.
Regional compatibility v0.4.0 supports the US NTSC-U version. PAL and Japanese ROMs are recognized by region but are not supported in this release. NTSC-U, NTSC-J, and PAL releases exist, with some regional text differences.

The N64 regional frame-rate and text information comes from The GoldenEye Depot’s versions page. It records regional wording differences, including US and British spellings and some reworded mission briefings. These are differences among N64 releases; they should not be confused with the PC port’s widescreen, input, or frame-rate features.

What v0.4.0 adds on PC

The project’s v0.4.0 release, dated 2026-09-28, lists Windows and Linux support. It also says a Linux bundle can be sideloaded on Steam Deck. Modern control and display options include:

  • Native widescreen.
  • Mouse and controller aiming.
  • In-game key rebinding and crosshair customization.
  • Rumble support and a rebuilt options overlay.

The project reports that the full campaign runs at a steady 60 fps. That figure is the project’s own release claim, not a published independent test, and the release remains pre-1.0. The project warns that features may still be missing and breaking changes may occur between releases.

ROM requirement and supported regions

To use the port, you need a legally owned compatible .z64 ROM. The project does not distribute the ROM or extracted game assets. For v0.4.0, support is limited to the US NTSC-U version; recognizing PAL or Japanese ROMs by region does not mean those versions are supported.

Which version should you choose?

  • Choose the PC port if you want the original N64 game lineage with widescreen, mouse or controller aiming, and other modern PC options—and you have the required compatible ROM.
  • Choose an N64 release if you want to play on original Nintendo 64 hardware or specifically experience an original regional version and its frame rate or text.
  • Check the project identity if you encounter another “GoldenEye PC” release: some projects target the unreleased Xbox 360 remaster rather than the 1997 N64 game.

The available sources document the port’s architecture and reported features, but do not establish exhaustive equivalence testing across every level, N64 timing behavior, or visual quirk.
