For most investors who want a liquid, low-friction allocation to gold, a Gold ETF is the practical default. It trades on an exchange during market hours and can be bought in small units, but you pay an expense ratio and trading costs and accept tracking risk. A Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) is better suited to money that can remain invested for years: it adds 2.5% annual interest and Government of India issuance, but normally runs for eight years and may be difficult to sell at a fair price before maturity. Physical gold is the right tool for possession, jewellery, gifting or household use—not usually the most efficient investment after GST, making charges, storage and resale deductions.

The best choice depends on your purpose, holding period, need for cash, tolerance for market and issuer risk, and the tax rules that apply when you buy and sell.

Gold ETF, SGB and physical gold at a glance

Priority Usually the better fit Why it fits What you give up
Daily liquidity, rebalancing or small-ticket investing Gold ETF Exchange trading during market hours and units that can be accumulated gradually Expense ratio, tracking difference, bid-ask spread, brokerage and demat requirements
Long holding period, a coupon and government-issued security Sovereign Gold Bond, where an eligible issue or tradable bond is available Eight-year tenor, a fifth-year premature-redemption route and 2.5% annual interest Long commitment, uncertain secondary-market liquidity and changing tax rules
Possession, gifting, jewellery or household use Physical gold You own and can use the metal directly GST, making charges, storage or theft risk, purity checks and resale deductions

None of these choices removes gold-price risk. Their differences are mainly in access, cash flow, costs, custody and the ease of exiting.

How a Gold ETF works

What you own

A Gold ETF is a SEBI-regulated fund designed to be backed by physical gold. Instead of storing coins or bars yourself, you hold units in a demat account and the unit value generally follows the rupee price of gold. The fund does not pay a coupon, and it is not a sovereign guarantee or a bank deposit.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Why investors use it

  • Market-hour liquidity: You can place buy or sell orders on the exchange while it is open, rather than finding a jeweller or bullion dealer.
  • Small, repeatable purchases: Units can be accumulated over time, allowing a planned allocation or periodic rebalancing.
  • No personal storage: The fund structure handles custody of the underlying metal.
  • Transparent market pricing: The traded price is visible, although it can move slightly above or below the value of the gold held by the scheme.

Costs that reduce your return

The expense ratio is deducted within the fund and creates a drag even when the gold price is unchanged. The fund’s tracking difference can also arise from cash holdings, operating costs and the way the scheme obtains exposure. At the time of a trade, the bid-ask spread and brokerage affect your effective price. A low-volume ETF may have a wider spread than a heavily traded one, so the quoted last price is not necessarily the price at which a large order can be filled.

How to buy and sell

  1. Open a demat and trading account with a regulated intermediary.
  2. Compare the scheme’s expense ratio, assets, trading volume, average spread and historical tracking difference. These figures change, so check the latest documents and exchange data before ordering.
  3. Use a limit order when the spread is wide or the market is moving quickly; a market order can execute at a less favourable price.
  4. Review the contract note and account statement after the trade. Your return is the gold-price movement minus the expense ratio, tracking difference and trading costs.

A Gold ETF is therefore most useful when you value the ability to enter, rebalance or exit without waiting for a fixed maturity date. It is less attractive if you need physical metal or if your account and trading costs are disproportionate to a very small holding.

How a Sovereign Gold Bond works

Terms and cash flows

An SGB is issued as Government of India stock and denominated in grams of gold. Under the Reserve Bank of India’s Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme 2022-23 – Series I, the tenor is eight years. The bond pays 2.5% interest a year, normally in two instalments, and the principal value moves with the applicable gold price.

Feature Term
Issuer structure Government of India stock issued through the Reserve Bank of India
Denomination Grams of gold
Normal maturity Eight years
Interest 2.5% per year, paid semi-annually
Issuer-defined early redemption After the fifth year, only on an interest-payment date
Redemption reference Simple average of the closing price of 999-purity gold for the previous three business days, as published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA)

The quoted redemption formula means your maturity or eligible early-redemption amount is linked to a published gold reference price, not to the price at which a particular jeweller would buy your ornament. The interest is a separate cash flow and is taxable.

Liquidity before maturity

You may be able to sell an SGB on the stock exchange before the issuer’s redemption date, but a listing does not guarantee a ready buyer. Trading can be thin, and the market price may be below the value suggested by the gold price. The formal premature-redemption facility starts only after year five and operates on specified interest-payment dates. An SGB is consequently a poor match for an emergency fund, a planned expense within a few years or frequent portfolio rebalancing.

Availability and purchase route

SGBs are not continuously available like exchange-traded securities. The government announces subscription windows from time to time, and already-issued bonds may appear on an exchange. Before committing, confirm that an issue is open or that a secondary-market bond can be purchased, check its maturity date, coupon schedule and traded price, and ensure that the bond is credited to your demat account or held through the permitted channel.

Who should consider an SGB

  • An investor who can leave the money invested for the full tenor or accept the year-five redemption timetable.
  • Someone who values a fixed coupon in addition to gold-price exposure.
  • A buyer willing to check issue terms, market liquidity and the tax treatment of the exact acquisition route.

Do not choose an SGB solely because its interest rate looks attractive. A bond bought at a secondary-market premium, or sold at a discount because of low trading activity, can produce a different result from an original issue held to maturity.

What physical gold really costs

Forms and purposes

Physical gold includes jewellery, coins and bars. A 24-karat, 999-purity coin or bar is the clearest investment form because it avoids paying for a design that has no bullion value. Jewellery can satisfy a wearing, gifting or family-use need, but it is primarily a consumption purchase: the amount you pay includes workmanship and retail margins as well as the metal.

Up-front and ongoing friction

The comparison figures reported by Finin2min in June 2026 put GST on physical gold at 3% and indicative jewellery making charges at roughly 6% to 25%. Those making-charge figures are seller-dependent, not a universal tariff, and the final bill can also include design, wastage or other disclosed charges. You must arrange secure storage, and insurance may add another cost. Theft or loss is a risk that an exchange-traded holding does not create in your home.

Buying checklist

  1. Decide whether the purpose is investment, wearing, gifting or household use. Do not pay jewellery-level charges for a goal that only needs gold-price exposure.
  2. Ask for the purity, weight, hallmark information and a full invoice that separates metal value, making charges, GST and any other fee.
  3. For coins or bars, compare the dealer’s premium over the prevailing bullion price and ask about the written buyback policy before paying.
  4. Store the item securely and keep the invoice and purity documentation; both matter when you later seek a resale quote.

Resale reality

A dealer’s buyback price can include a spread, a purity test, melting or handling deductions and a discount for the item’s condition. Jewellery making charges are generally not recovered in full. There is no single India-wide resale deduction: it varies by seller, product, purity, location and date. Obtain more than one quote if the sale is not urgent.

Tax points to verify before investing

Tax is not one universal rate for all three choices. The result depends on the instrument, your holding period, the transfer or redemption date, your investor status and the assessment year.

Capital gains framework

Current Income Tax Department guidance states that, for transfers on or after 23 July 2024, long-term capital gains are generally taxed at 12.5% without indexation in the applicable framework. Whether a particular Gold ETF or physical-gold transaction qualifies as long term, and how a gain is computed, depends on the instrument and the facts of the sale. Check the law and guidance that apply to your assessment year rather than applying 12.5% automatically.

SGB interest and redemption

SGB interest is taxable. The Finance Ministry’s 2026 memorandum proposes that a capital-gains exemption on redemption apply only where the investor subscribed at the original issue and held continuously until maturity. A proposal is not the same as an enacted rule: before relying on an exemption, confirm the legislation passed, its effective date and whether it covers your assessment year. An SGB bought on the secondary market may not receive the same treatment as an original-issue subscription.

Keep records

  • Retain purchase confirmations, contract notes, interest statements and redemption or sale documents.
  • Record the acquisition route and date, especially for an SGB.
  • Ask a tax professional about your circumstances if the holding is large, jointly owned, inherited or used in a business.

Choose by the job your gold must do

Choose a Gold ETF when liquidity is the priority

Select an ETF when you want to adjust your allocation quickly, invest a small amount regularly or avoid home storage. Compare the latest expense ratio, spread, volume and tracking record instead of assuming every Gold ETF behaves identically.

Choose an SGB when the money can stay invested

An SGB can suit a long-term allocation when you are comfortable with an eight-year structure, the year-five redemption condition, taxable interest and the possibility of thin secondary trading. Verify that the issue or bond you are considering is actually available and check the maturity date before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose physical gold when ownership or use is the objective

Buy physical gold when you need an ornament, a gift, a family asset or metal you can hold directly. For an investment-only objective, a high-purity coin or bar usually creates fewer non-metal charges than jewellery, but it still carries GST, storage and resale friction.

Mistakes that commonly damage returns

  • Confusing availability with liquidity: An SGB may be listed yet trade infrequently. A physical item may be sellable but only after a dealer’s deductions.
  • Ignoring the all-in price: Include ETF costs and spread, SGB purchase premium or discount, or physical-gold GST and making charges.
  • Buying jewellery as a pure investment: Workmanship and resale deductions can overwhelm a modest move in the gold price.
  • Assuming tax treatment is permanent: Rules can differ by purchase route and assessment year, particularly for SGB redemption.
  • Using short-term money: Gold prices can fall, and an SGB’s design makes an early exit inconvenient.
  • Buying without a rebalancing limit: Decide in advance what share of your portfolio gold should represent; gold exposure should not replace cash needed for near-term expenses.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Write down the purpose: investment exposure, emergency liquidity, long-term diversification, jewellery, gifting or possession.
  2. Set the earliest date you may need the money. If it is before five years, an SGB’s issuer redemption route does not match that date.
  3. Compare the total friction for your expected holding period, not just the headline price or coupon.
  4. Check the current tax rule, effective date and documentation requirements for the exact product and purchase route.
  5. Use a regulated channel, retain records and review the allocation periodically rather than chasing short-term gold-price moves.

For a liquid portfolio allocation, that process usually leads to a Gold ETF. A long-horizon investor who values a coupon may accept an SGB’s lock-in and liquidity limits. Physical gold remains the deliberate choice when the metal itself—not merely its price exposure—is what you need.
