There is no universal winner. A gold ETF is usually the practical choice when you want exchange liquidity, visible market pricing and no bullion at home. Physical gold is appropriate when possession, gifting or cultural use matters more than investment efficiency. Sovereign gold bonds (SGBs) can suit a long horizon if you accept an eight-year maturity, changing issuance rules and potentially thin secondary-market trading.

Choose by purpose and exit date first, then compare costs, custody, income and tax treatment. None of the three guarantees a profit: your realised result depends on gold prices plus the spreads, fees, tracking differences or market discounts attached to the route you use.

Start with your goal and time horizon

The same gold-price movement can produce different investor outcomes because each route has a different way to enter, hold and exit. Before buying, write down three answers:

  • Why are you buying? Portfolio exposure, a gift, jewellery, cultural use or direct possession are different objectives.
  • When might you need the money? A tradable fund is structurally different from a bond designed to mature after eight years.
  • What friction can you tolerate? Storage, dealer negotiation, brokerage, bid-offer spreads and possible secondary-market discounts all reduce the amount you finally realise.

If your objective is purely financial exposure and you already have a demat and trading route, an ETF generally involves the fewest physical-handling tasks. If the object itself has value to you, only physical gold delivers possession. If you can hold to the applicable bond terms and want the scheme’s interest component, an SGB may be worth considering after checking that a suitable issue or trading opportunity actually exists.

What the three choices actually are

Gold ETF

A gold exchange-traded fund is a passive fund designed to follow the value of gold. SEBI Investor describes ETFs as vehicles that provide diversification and liquidity; a SEBI scheme document says gold ETFs are backed by physical gold and that their value fluctuates with gold prices. You buy and sell units through the exchange using a demat and trading account rather than handling bars or coins.

The traded unit is not a promise that your return will exactly equal the quoted gold price. Fund expenses, bid-offer spreads, impact costs, tracking differences, counterparty exposure and periods of weak trading liquidity can all create a gap between the reference gold price and your realised result. A market order can execute at a less favourable price than the last displayed quote when the order book is thin, so the quoted price and the executable price are not always identical.

Physical gold

Physical ownership means you hold the metal directly, usually as bullion, coins or jewellery. SEBI Investor identifies physical ownership as one way to invest in precious metals. The transaction is completed with a dealer or jeweller, and your practical protection depends on the invoice, purity documentation, product specifications and the seller’s buyback terms.

Physical gold can meet needs that financial products cannot: a family gift, a wedding purchase, cultural use or the reassurance of having an asset in hand. Those benefits come with responsibilities. You must arrange secure storage, consider theft or damage, retain purchase records and find a buyer when you sell. Jewellery can be especially inefficient as an investment because making charges and resale deductions may not be recovered.

Sovereign gold bonds

An SGB is a government-backed security linked to the price of gold. The scheme terms described in a June 2026 chartered-accountant-reviewed comparison included an annual interest component of 2.5% and an eight-year maturity. Treat those figures as terms of the relevant scheme or bond series, not as a guarantee for every future purchase route.

SGBs may be issued in new tranches, but availability can change. Existing bonds can also trade on an exchange. In practice, an investor’s exit depends on the maturity date, any permitted redemption windows under the applicable series and the possibility of finding a secondary-market buyer. The comparison noted that exchange trading may have low volume, so a quoted price may not translate into an immediate sale at that price.

Side-by-side comparison

Factor Gold ETF Physical gold Sovereign gold bond
What you own Units of a passive fund backed by physical gold, held through a demat account. Metal held directly as bullion, coins or jewellery. Government-backed security linked to gold, held in an account or dematerialised form.
How you buy and sell Exchange orders through a broker during market hours. Purchase from and resale to a dealer or jeweller; terms vary by seller. Applicable issue subscription, permitted redemption windows or exchange sale.
Liquidity Usually the most convenient of the three when the unit has an active order book; spreads, impact costs and liquidity risk still apply. Depends on a willing dealer and the dealer’s buyback price; not an instant exchange exit. Maturity is eight years under the cited scheme terms; early exit and exchange liquidity depend on the series and market conditions, which may include low volume.
Ongoing or transaction costs Fund expenses, brokerage and bid-offer spread; impact cost and tracking difference can reduce returns. Dealer premium, possible making charges for jewellery, storage or insurance, and buy/sell spread or resale deductions. Issue-related or brokerage costs and a possible discount or spread when selling before maturity.
Custody No home bullion; units are account-held, subject to the trading and intermediary infrastructure. You arrange secure physical storage and accept loss, damage and theft risk. Account-held or dematerialised; no household storage of metal.
Income Generally no guaranteed coupon; value is driven mainly by gold exposure after fund costs. No coupon or interest. The cited scheme terms include a 2.5% annual interest component; verify the exact series and current rules.
Price exposure Gold-price movement, adjusted by fund tracking, expenses and trading spreads. Gold-price movement, adjusted by premiums, purity, dealer spreads and resale deductions. Gold-price movement plus bond-market pricing, liquidity and the applicable interest terms.
Tax Depends on the exact ETF, holding period and transaction date. Depends on the form of gold, holding period and transaction date. Depends on the transaction route, holding period and the rules for that government security.

The table is a decision map, not a return forecast. No stable comparative return statistic was established for these three routes, so a past-performance ranking would be misleading.

Liquidity: how quickly can you get out?

ETF execution

An ETF can be sold with an exchange order, but execution quality matters. Check the displayed bid and ask, the recent trading activity and the size of your order. A limit order lets you specify the minimum price you will accept; a market order prioritises execution and can be more exposed to a wide spread or a thin order book. The exchange price can temporarily differ from the underlying value of the fund units.

Physical resale

Physical gold is liquid only through a counterparty willing to buy it. A dealer may test purity, deduct a spread, or apply a different policy to products bought elsewhere. Jewellery resale can be further reduced by making-charge exclusions and deductions. Keep the invoice, purity certificate and any written buyback terms; without them, proving what you bought and what the seller promised becomes harder.

SGB exit

An SGB is the least flexible choice for an investor who may need the money on a specific near-term date. The cited terms specify an eight-year maturity, while early redemption is available only under the windows permitted for the applicable series. An exchange listing creates another route, but low volume can mean a delayed sale, a wide spread or a price below the value you expected. Confirm the series’ maturity, redemption provisions, listing status and recent trading activity before committing money.

Total cost: look beyond the purchase price

ETF cost stack

  • Fund expenses: deducted within the fund and reflected in its net asset value.
  • Trading costs: brokerage and exchange charges, where applicable.
  • Spread and impact cost: the difference between buy and sell quotes and the price movement caused by your order.
  • Tracking difference: the gap between the ETF’s result and the reference gold price after expenses and implementation effects.

For a small, infrequent investor, the spread can matter more than a tiny difference in published annual expenses. For a large order, market depth and impact cost deserve particular attention.

Physical-gold cost stack

  • Premium: the amount charged above the metal value for the product and distribution.
  • Making charges: relevant mainly to jewellery and often not fully recoverable on sale.
  • Storage and insurance: costs of a safe, bank facility or other secure arrangement, plus possible insurance.
  • Resale deduction: the dealer’s spread, purity-testing adjustment and product-specific buyback terms.

Compare the complete round trip: the price you pay, the documented purity, the amount a named buyer will pay back and every deduction. A low advertised premium is not necessarily the lowest total cost if the buyback policy is weak.

SGB cost stack

Review any issue or brokerage charge, the purchase price relative to the gold value, and the spread or discount that may apply if you sell on an exchange. The interest component can add to cash received under the scheme terms, but it does not remove gold-price risk or guarantee that a pre-maturity sale will occur at a favourable price.

Custody and operational risk

ETFs and SGBs remove the need to keep bullion in your home, but they are not risk-free. You rely on the fund, the exchange, the intermediary and account access. Maintain secure account credentials, nominate beneficiaries where available and download contract notes or holding statements.

With physical gold, the risk is tangible: loss, theft, accidental damage and uncertain access to a trustworthy buyer. A safe or other storage arrangement reduces some risks but does not eliminate them. Separate investment records from sentimental value; jewellery that you would never sell should not be treated as a liquid emergency reserve.

Income and price behaviour

Physical gold does not pay a coupon. Gold ETFs generally do not provide a guaranteed coupon either; their value primarily follows gold after fund expenses and trading effects. The SGB scheme terms cited in the June 2026 comparison included a 2.5% annual interest component, which is the only one of the three structures with a stated interest feature in the supplied evidence.

That interest does not make an SGB a deposit or remove the possibility that gold prices fall. If the bond is sold before maturity, the market price can reflect interest-rate expectations, demand, time remaining and liquidity as well as the gold price. Compare the income feature with your actual holding period, not with a headline rate in isolation.

Tax: identify the exact instrument and date

Tax treatment is not interchangeable across an ETF unit, jewellery or bullion and an SGB. The Income-tax Department states that long-term capital gains on many assets transferred on or after 23 July 2024 are taxed at 12.5% without indexation, with different holding-period rules for listed assets, unlisted assets and government securities. That statement does not justify applying one rate or one holding-period test to all three gold routes.

Before selling, record:

  • the legal form of the asset (ETF unit, coin, bar, jewellery or government security);
  • purchase and sale dates and transaction values;
  • brokerage, premiums, making charges or other documented costs;
  • whether the sale is on an exchange, to a dealer, at maturity or through a permitted redemption window; and
  • the tax rules in force for that transaction date.

Use current Income-tax Department guidance or a qualified tax professional for the filing decision. Do not assume that a bond’s government backing, an ETF’s listing or a physical item’s purity changes the applicable tax category by itself.

Choose by investor profile

Choose an ETF when tradability is the priority

  • You want market-based buying and selling rather than a dealer negotiation.
  • You have a functioning demat and trading account.
  • You want to avoid storing bullion and can accept fund expenses, spreads and tracking differences.
  • You can use limit orders and check liquidity instead of assuming every quote is executable.

Choose physical gold when possession is the purpose

  • You need a gift, jewellery or an item for cultural use.
  • You value direct ownership enough to accept storage, security and resale work.
  • You will compare purity documents, invoices, premiums and written buyback terms.
  • You understand that jewellery making charges and resale deductions can reduce investment efficiency.

Consider an SGB only when the holding period fits

  • You can tolerate an eight-year maturity under the cited scheme terms.
  • You have confirmed that the relevant issue or secondary-market series is currently available.
  • You understand the permitted redemption windows and the possibility of low-volume exchange trading.
  • You value the scheme’s stated interest component but will not treat it as a guaranteed return from every purchase route.

A practical selection process

  1. Define the use. Mark your objective as financial exposure, possession, gifting, jewellery or a combination. If the objective is jewellery, compare it as a consumption purchase as well as an investment.
  2. Set the exit date. Separate money that may be needed within months from money that can remain invested for years. Remove an SGB from consideration if its maturity and permitted exits do not fit your date.
  3. Check access. For an ETF, verify demat, trading and order-book access. For physical gold, identify the seller and a realistic resale counterparty. For an SGB, verify the exact series, issue or listing status and redemption rules.
  4. Calculate the round-trip cost. Estimate what you pay, every known fee or deduction and the amount you could reasonably receive on sale. Do not compare only the displayed purchase prices.
  5. Document the transaction. Keep contract notes for ETFs, invoices and purity records for physical gold, and allotment or holding records for SGBs.
  6. Recheck tax rules immediately before selling. Apply the rule for the exact instrument and transaction date, not a generic “gold tax” rule found in an old article.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming all gold exposure is interchangeable

Two assets can follow the same broad commodity while producing different cash outcomes. A fund spread, jewellery deduction or bond-market discount belongs in the comparison from the beginning.

Treating a quoted price as a guaranteed exit price

ETF and SGB quotes depend on an order book. Physical-gold quotes depend on a dealer’s test and buyback policy. Ask what price is actually executable and under what conditions.

Buying jewellery for a short-term investment

Making charges, design premiums and resale deductions can overwhelm a modest change in the gold price. Buy jewellery for its intended use, and use a lower-friction structure when the objective is only price exposure.

Ignoring custody because the asset is “safe”

Physical metal can be stolen or damaged; account-held products can be inaccessible if records, credentials or intermediary arrangements are neglected. Plan storage and records as part of the investment decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming the 2.5% SGB figure applies forever

The 2.5% annual interest component was reported for scheme terms in a June 2026 comparison. Confirm the bond series and current government rules before purchase; availability and terms can change.

Using a single tax shortcut

The post-23 July 2024 12.5% long-term capital-gains statement applies to many assets, not automatically to every gold product. Classify the instrument and transaction first, then verify the applicable rule.

Bottom-line decision

For a financially focused investor who wants convenient trading and no household bullion, a gold ETF is usually the cleanest fit, provided the fund and order book are liquid enough and the investor accepts expenses and tracking differences. Physical gold is the deliberate choice when possession, gifting or use outweighs the costs of storage and resale. An SGB is a specialised long-horizon choice: its cited eight-year maturity and interest component can be attractive, but only if the relevant series is available and its redemption and liquidity limits match your plan.

Make the decision from your purpose and exit date, then verify the current product terms and tax treatment immediately before investing.
