Godzilla Minus Zero looks set to make its postwar human drama and kaiju spectacle larger than before, but early critics disagree about whether that expansion works. GamesRadar+ praises its emotional force and ambition while noting a less focused story; The Daily Beast argues that Godzilla is too often pushed aside by the human characters. Those are two individual reactions to a film that has not yet opened widely—not a verdict from audiences as a whole.

What is Godzilla Minus Zero about?

Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who also leads the visual-effects work, Godzilla Minus Zero is a direct follow-up to Godzilla Minus One. Its official premise returns to a Japan struggling to recover after the war and Godzilla’s devastation, before a new threat shatters a fragile peace.

Piece of Magic Entertainment dates the story to 1949, two years after the previous film, and says it continues the story of the Shikishima family. The official synopsis puts the stakes starkly: “War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus. Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life. Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant. There is no third time. Everything ends here.”

TOHO is releasing the film in Japan, while GKIDS is handling its wide North American release. TOHO Studios and ROBOT are named as producers; GKIDS’ announcement credits SHIROGUMI with visual effects. The predecessor’s success sets a high bar: TOHO and GKIDS say Godzilla Minus One grossed more than $116 million worldwide and won Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards. Those figures belong to the earlier film, not Minus Zero.

What do the early reviews say?

The film premiered at the New York Film Festival on September 26, 2026. The reviews available before its general theatrical opening reflect two critics’ responses, not a broad critical or audience consensus.

Review What works Main reservation
GamesRadar+, Molly Edwards, September 27, 2026 Edwards finds the mix of human drama and kaiju action emotionally effective, describing the sequel as “bigger, bolder, and more ambitious.” The larger cast and scope make the film less streamlined and draw some focus away from the Shikishima family. The review’s headline calls it “Easily one of the best films of the year.”
The Daily Beast, Nick Schager, September 26, 2026 Schager acknowledges the force of some monster sequences and the ground-level presentation of destruction. He argues that the film gives too much priority to human characters and too little sustained presence to Godzilla.

The divide is about balance as much as scale. Edwards sees the broader canvas as ambitious, even if it loosens the family focus; Schager sees the human emphasis as taking too much room from the monster. If you most want an intimate continuation of the Shikishimas’ story, the GamesRadar+ caveat is especially relevant. If you expect Godzilla to dominate the running time, Schager’s criticism flags a possible mismatch.

When and where can you watch it?

The announced primary theatrical dates are November 3, 2026, in Japan and November 6 in North America. TOHO and GKIDS describe this as the first near-simultaneous release in Japan and North America for a Japan-produced Godzilla film. Piece of Magic Entertainment has announced a rollout across 46 markets beginning November 4, with many markets scheduled for November 5 or 6; dates outside Japan and North America can vary, so check local listings for the current schedule.

GamesRadar+ lists a 135-minute runtime. Treat that as the review’s listing and confirm the runtime with a local exhibitor if it affects your plans. The film is scheduled for theatrical release; the sources available before opening do not establish a streaming date or home-video release.

Is Godzilla Minus Zero worth seeing?

For viewers who liked Godzilla Minus One’s combination of postwar human stakes and destructive monster spectacle, the premise promises a continuation of that approach, now on a broader scale. The most useful caution is the early critical split: one review finds the emotional drama and ambition compelling despite a looser focus, while another wants more sustained Godzilla presence. That makes Minus Zero a plausible theatrical choice for fans of the previous film, but the reviews do not support calling it a universally successful follow-up.
