God of War III Remastered is officially playable on PS5, not on Xbox Series X. The supported route is the PS4 edition running through PS5 backward compatibility. A compatibility record reports 1080p output at a locked 60 frames per second with HDR. Xbox Series X backward compatibility covers selected Xbox 360, original Xbox, and Xbox One games; it does not turn the console into a general PS4 emulator. What God of War III Remastered is—and which version you need
God of War III Remastered is a PlayStation 4 release that launched on July 14, 2015. Santa Monica Studio developed it and Sony Interactive Entertainment published it. There is no Xbox edition of this remaster in the product information reviewed for this guide.

How PS5 backward compatibility works for this game
Use the PS4 edition
PS5 compatibility here is not a separate PS5 remaster or a new native build. It is the PS4 release running on PS5 through Sony’s supported compatibility system. Use either a legitimate physical PS4 copy or a digital PS4 entitlement associated with the account that owns it.
For a physical copy, a PS5 model with a disc drive is required, and the disc normally remains the ownership check when you launch the installed game. A digital-only PS5 cannot read a PS4 disc. The store listing is the authority for the edition attached to a particular purchase and region.

Sony’s product description states: “To play this game on PS5, your system may need to be updated to the latest system software.” Update the console before troubleshooting installation or launch errors. Sony also warns that some PS4 features may be absent when the game is played on PS5; backward compatibility does not promise that every PS4 peripheral, menu behavior or online function survives unchanged.
Documented output and frame rate
The available compatibility record reports a single 1080p mode running at a locked 60 FPS with HDR. “Locked” describes the recorded mode, not a promise that every television will display 60 Hz: the display, cable, HDR setting and console video-output configuration still have to support the signal.

The same record does not identify a special PS5 enhancement over PS4 Pro. Do not buy the game expecting a separately advertised higher-resolution PS5 patch, ray tracing mode or performance mode unless Sony publishes one for your edition.
Installing and launching the game on PS5
- Confirm the product. Check that your copy is God of War III Remastered for PS4, not a different God of War title or the original PS3 release.
- Update the console. Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, then install any available update. Menu wording can change with PS5 system software.
- Insert or download the game. Insert the PS4 disc into a disc-drive PS5, or open Game Library > Your Collection and download the digital entitlement. The first installation may include a compatibility or game update.
- Keep the license available. Leave the disc inserted for a physical copy when starting the game. For a digital copy, sign in to the account that owns the game and let the download complete.
- Check video output if needed. Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Set the resolution to Automatic or 1080p and enable HDR only if the television and HDMI chain support it.
- Start the title. Launch the installed game from the home screen. The documented target is 1080p, 60 FPS and HDR; the title itself does not expose a separate PS5 graphics-mode selector in the information available here.
What Xbox Series X backward compatibility actually covers
Xbox Series X|S backward compatibility is a curated program for selected Xbox 360, original Xbox and Xbox One software. Microsoft’s Xbox Wire description says, “Games play best on Xbox Series X and Series S,” and explains that owners can insert a compatible Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc, install the game and play. That promise applies to games in the supported catalog, not to software made for another console family.
Xbox Wire reported more than 500,000 hours of gameplay testing in 2020 while preparing Series X|S backward compatibility across four Xbox generations. That figure demonstrates the scale of Microsoft’s compatibility work; it is not evidence that PS4 games were tested or that this title is supported.

Does Xbox Series X emulate PS4 games?
Not through the consumer-facing backward-compatibility feature. Series X backward compatibility is built around selected Xbox software and Microsoft’s own compatibility process. It is not a switch that accepts arbitrary PlayStation 4 discs, images or system software.
An unofficial attempt would require software and game-system components outside the documented Xbox workflow. No official Xbox documentation establishes a particular emulator, a working configuration, a supported firmware combination or a repeatable performance result. Treat claims that it “runs at 60 FPS” as configuration-specific demonstrations rather than a console capability.
Licensing and legal uncertainty
A legal explainer reviewed for this topic cautions that owning a game does not automatically authorize every form of emulation on Xbox. Platform terms can restrict emulation or circumvention, and the legal analysis changes by country, emulator and method. Performance and reliability expectations
No benchmark for Xbox emulation of this game is established here. Which console runs it at 60 FPS?
The documented 60-FPS option is the PS5 running the PS4 edition. The compatibility record specifies 1080p output, a locked 60 FPS and HDR. That is the only measured target supplied for this comparison.

If you own the digital PS4 edition, download it from the owning account instead. The exact entitlement, region and edition shown in your library control what Sony lets you install.

Sony’s listing also notes that a system update may be required and that some PS4 features may not be present. Those conditions apply whether your copy began as a disc or a digital purchase.
Troubleshooting the supported PS5 route
The game does not appear in the library
- Confirm that the signed-in account purchased the digital PS4 edition.
- Check Game Library > Your Collection and filter for PS4 titles.
- For a disc copy, insert the disc into a disc-drive PS5; a digital-only model cannot validate it.
- If the entitlement is still missing, use Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses, then restart the console.
The disc is not recognized
- Verify that the disc is the PS4 remaster and not a PS3 disc, which the PS5 cannot use as this product.
- Remove fingerprints or dust with a soft, lint-free cloth and reinsert the disc.
- Install the latest PS5 system software before trying again.
- If other discs also fail, the problem may be the drive or disc rather than backward compatibility.
HDR or 60-Hz output is missing
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and review the resolution and HDR options.
- Check that the television input, HDMI cable and any receiver or switch in the chain support HDR at the selected refresh rate.
