The release also brings important developer tools and compatibility changes—especially the move away from dedicated X11 sessions—so whether it is a good upgrade depends on your distribution, hardware, and workflow.
What changed in GNOME 49?
GNOME 49, code-named “Brescia,” was released on September 17, 2025. The GNOME Project described it as the result of six months of community work. Its changes span everyday desktop apps, accessibility, display and remote-desktop features, and the development platform.
The release is no longer listed as the current stable branch in the GNOME release calendar’s September 30, 2026 snapshot. That does not by itself determine whether GNOME 49 is supported on your computer: distribution packaging and support policies differ, so check your Linux distribution’s release information.

Showtime replaces Totem
Showtime is built with GTK 4 and Libadwaita. Its minimal playback view hides controls until they are needed, while its playback options cover common needs such as changing speed, choosing audio or subtitle tracks, rotating a video, and taking a screenshot.

Papers replaces Evince
Papers is the new default document viewer, with a GTK 4 and Libadwaita interface. Its format support includes PDF, DjVu, TIFF, and CBR, CBZ, CBT, and CB7 comic-book archives. It also improves PDF annotation and integrates digital signatures.
What is better for accessibility and daily use?
Calendar works better across window sizes and input methods
Calendar’s reorganized interface adapts to different window sizes, and you can hide its sidebar when you need more room. It also adds .ics event export and clearer event presentation. The GNOME Project says Calendar is designed to work for people who navigate exclusively by keyboard and people using assistive technologies.
Quick Settings and the login screen are easier to use
Do Not Disturb is now in Quick Settings, and the login screen has a more prominent accessibility menu. The battery icon can also indicate that power is connected while charging is limited to preserve battery health. A new setting lets administrators or users enable reboot and shutdown controls on the lock screen.

What is new in GNOME Web?
The GNOME Project reports that more than 100 issues were resolved in GNOME Web during this release cycle. The browser’s changes include:
- Optional regional ad-block lists.
- A site-specific menu in the URL entry, plus OpenSearch discovery and live suggestions.
- An estimated reading time in reader mode.
- Improvements to smartcard support, password management, and the security dialog.
- Menus for quitting or uninstalling web apps.
- In-page search options for case-sensitive and whole-word matching.
- A bookmark editing mode.
What does GNOME 49 add for HDR and remote desktops?
HDR wallpapers and brightness controls
GNOME 49 includes wallpapers designed for HDR and Display P3. Mutter’s color management can render those wallpapers at full 16-bit-per-channel RGB depth, while Glycin’s color-managed image pipeline has performance improvements. Quick Settings gains HDR brightness controls, including controls for external and multiple displays. These features matter most if your display and graphics setup support HDR; the release notes do not provide independent measurements of HDR quality or battery impact.
More input and monitor options over remote desktop
Remote desktop can forward multitouch and relative mouse input, and clients can create additional virtual monitors. The practical benefit depends on the remote client and the devices involved, particularly for touch input and multi-monitor use.

What are the security and control improvements?
GNOME 49 sandboxes GTK image loading, reducing the risk that image-processing vulnerabilities could compromise the broader application. The lock screen also exposes media controls. For displays, the new HDR brightness controls are available from Quick Settings; power-status feedback and the option to expose restart and shutdown on the lock screen provide additional system-state and access controls.

Updated libraries and interface APIs
GNOME 49 accompanies GTK 4.20, GLib 2.86.0, and Libadwaita 1.8. GTK 4.20 includes YUV formats, symbolic-icon rendering work, CSS media queries for color scheme and contrast, accessibility improvements, new graphics APIs, and Glycin as gdk-pixbuf’s preferred image loader. GLib 2.86.0 improves journald identifiers and file-handle support in nested containers. Libadwaita 1.8 adds adaptive shortcut-dialog widgets and document typography.

A new Mutter development environment
The Mutter Development Kit replaces the older nested development method. It uses Toolbx and improves isolation, HiDPI handling, and touch emulation. Together with Sysprof’s expanded instrumentation, these changes are especially relevant to developers working on GNOME Shell, Mutter, graphics, and interface performance.

GNOME 49 disables dedicated X11 sessions by default in gnome-session, GDM, Mutter, and GNOME Shell. This is not the same as dropping support for X11 applications: they remain supported through Xwayland. Distributions and users with legacy-session requirements should check how their distribution configures GNOME and whether it provides a dedicated X11 session.
There are also system-service changes to account for. GDM uses systemd userdb, and gnome-session delegates service management to systemd. These changes make distribution compatibility and local system configuration worth checking before an upgrade.

Should you upgrade to GNOME 49?
GNOME 49 is most compelling if you want the newer default apps, rely on Calendar accessibility improvements, use GNOME Web, or have HDR and remote-desktop hardware that can use the added capabilities. Developers may value the updated libraries, profiling tools, and Mutter Development Kit.
Before upgrading, check your distribution’s supported GNOME versions and release notes, especially if you depend on a dedicated X11 session or have systemd-related constraints. GNOME recommends getting official packages through your Linux distribution. You can also try GNOME OS in a virtual machine using Boxes, but that is a way to explore GNOME rather than a substitute for checking your distribution’s support and upgrade path.
