For senders delivering 5,000 or more messages in a 24-hour period to personal Gmail accounts, Google requires SPF, DKIM and DMARC. The minimum DMARC policy can be p=none; the visible From domain must align with SPF or DKIM. Google says it began ramping up enforcement on non-compliant traffic in November 2025, so missing authentication can now mean spam placement, temporary or permanent rejection, or lost delivery support.

What changed in Gmail’s DMARC requirements?

Google’s sender guidelines, published with requirements that took effect February 1, 2024, apply the authentication requirement to bulk senders delivering more than 5,000 messages a day to personal Gmail addresses ending in @gmail.com or @googlemail.com. The threshold concerns messages to Gmail, not a sender’s total volume across all email providers. Google’s current FAQ says, “Starting November 2025, Gmail is ramping up its enforcement on non-compliant traffic.”

Non-compliance can result in temporary or permanent SMTP failures, messages landing in spam, and loss of delivery support or mitigations. Google’s FAQ identifies a missing DMARC record as a compliance issue even when the sender uses a minimum policy of p=none. Google Workspace administrators sending large volumes should also review the separate Workspace spam and abuse policy.

Does Gmail require DMARC if I send fewer than 5,000 emails?

The stated bulk-sender threshold is more than 5,000 messages per day delivered to personal Gmail accounts. Google’s published requirements do not state a corresponding Gmail bulk-sender DMARC requirement for senders below that volume. That threshold does not make SPF, DKIM or sound mail authentication irrelevant, and it does not override other provider or organizational requirements.

What does p=none mean?

A DMARC policy of p=none asks receivers to monitor authentication results and report them rather than instructing them to quarantine or reject every message that fails DMARC. It is the minimum policy Google says meets the bulk-sender DMARC requirement. This is not a substitute for SPF or DKIM: DMARC evaluates whether at least one of those mechanisms authenticates in alignment with the domain recipients see in the From field.

Gmail’s minimum does not require an immediate move to p=quarantine or p=reject. A stricter policy is a separate domain-owner decision and should follow review of legitimate mail streams and authentication results.

How to configure SPF, DKIM and DMARC

  1. Publish SPF for every sending domain. Ensure the domain’s SPF record accounts for the services authorized to send on its behalf.
  2. Enable DKIM signing. Configure each sending service to sign outgoing mail and publish its selector record in DNS.
  3. Publish a DMARC record. Create a TXT record at _dmarc.example.com for the domain, using at least p=none to meet Gmail’s stated bulk-sender minimum.
  4. Verify alignment. For direct mail to personal Gmail accounts, the organizational domain in the visible From header must align with either the SPF organizational domain or the DKIM organizational domain. Google recommends aligning both for stronger coverage.
  5. Check sending infrastructure and message format. Maintain valid forward and reverse DNS (PTR) records, use TLS for transmission and format messages according to RFC 5322.
  6. Meet unsubscribe requirements for promotional mail. Marketing and promotional messages need one-click unsubscribe headers and a visible unsubscribe link. Password resets, reservation confirmations and other transactional messages are excluded from the one-click requirement.

How to check DMARC alignment

Alignment is a comparison between the domain recipients see in the message’s From: header and the domain that passed SPF or DKIM authentication. A passing SPF or DKIM check alone is not enough if its authenticated domain does not align with the visible From domain. Gmail’s documented rule for direct mail is that the From organizational domain must align with SPF or DKIM; Google recommends configuring both paths to align.

  • Check the visible From domain in a representative message.
  • Check which domain SPF authenticates and whether that authentication passes.
  • Check the DKIM signing domain and whether its signature passes.
  • Confirm at least one passing mechanism aligns with the From organizational domain; investigate mismatches, and aim to align both.

Spam-rate limits and unsubscribe rules

Google recommends keeping the user-reported spam rate below 0.1% and avoiding 0.3%. At or above 0.3%, senders are ineligible for delivery mitigations until they remain below that threshold for seven consecutive days. Treat 0.1% as a practical upper target, not a goal: complaints can hurt reputation before the higher threshold is reached.

One-click unsubscribe applies to marketing and promotional messages and is in addition to a visible unsubscribe link. Transactional messages such as password resets and reservation confirmations are excluded from the one-click requirement.

Why might Gmail reject business email?

Authentication gaps, alignment failures and temporary DNS or verification problems can all affect delivery. Google documents these relevant SMTP responses:
