Gmail is retiring the web feature that uses POP to fetch messages from other email accounts. Google says the feature will stop supporting new users after Q1 2026 and will be fully removed in January 2027. Mail already synced into Gmail will remain there; to keep receiving new messages in one Gmail inbox, set up automatic forwarding with the other provider.
What Gmail is removing—and what it is not
Google says Gmail will no longer check third-party accounts through POP. The web setting called Check mail from other accounts will disappear, so Gmail.com will no longer poll another provider’s mailbox and bring new messages into your Gmail inbox. Google’s broader notice also includes Gmailify and third-party Send as features in the January 2027 removal. Google’s POP-specific help page and Google’s consolidated notice describe the changes.
This is not the end of POP or IMAP support across Gmail. External mail programs can still connect to Gmail through POP or IMAP, and Gmail API access remains available. The change concerns Gmail’s web inbox fetching mail from other providers—not external apps accessing a Gmail account.
When the change takes effect
| Milestone | What Google says |
|---|---|
| After Q1 2026 | New users will no longer be supported for the POP-based web feature, according to Google’s POP-specific help page. |
| Q3–Q4 2026 | Google identifies this as a transition period; Gmailify and POP continue to work during the transition, though new configurations may be restricted. |
| January 2027 | Google says it will fully remove Gmailify and web POP fetching. Existing users can continue until then. |
The POP-specific page describes the new-user cutoff as after Q1 2026, while Google’s broader notice calls Q3–Q4 2026 a transition period. For planning purposes, expect the feature to end in January 2027 and move your mail setup during 2026. Google’s timeline and feature notice.

What happens to mail already in Gmail?
Messages synced before the feature is deprecated stay in Gmail. The change affects future syncing and third-party sending, not messages already imported. Google confirms synced messages remain in Gmail.

| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic forwarding at the other provider | Receiving new messages in one Gmail inbox | The other provider forwards each message; Gmail no longer polls that mailbox. Set forwarding up in the other provider’s settings. |
| Gmail mobile app with IMAP | Reading and sending from several accounts on Android, iPhone, or iPad | It provides mobile access, not the retired Gmail.com aggregation control. |
| Desktop email client with IMAP/SMTP | A unified desktop workflow across providers | Requires configuring a separate app; it does not combine accounts in Gmail’s web inbox. Google names Outlook, Thunderbird, and Apple Mail as examples. |
| Other provider’s website or app | Using that account’s native tools and settings | You manage that mailbox outside Gmail. |
| One-time Gmail import | Moving historical messages and contacts | It does not continuously sync new messages. |
| Google Workspace migration | Administrators moving work or school mail | This is an administrative migration route, not a consumer replacement for POP fetching. |
Forward new mail into Gmail
If you want incoming messages from another account to appear in Gmail.com, configure automatic forwarding from that account’s provider. The forwarding control and available options vary by provider; Gmail’s retired POP setting is not where forwarding is configured. Check the provider’s own help or account settings for the forwarding procedure. Google lists provider-side forwarding as a replacement.
Add the account to the Gmail mobile app
Google says third-party accounts can still be added to the Gmail app for Android, iPhone, and iPad using a standard IMAP connection. This lets you read and send from multiple accounts in the app, but it does not bring those messages into Gmail.com’s web inbox through POP. Google’s Gmail app guidance.

Use a desktop client or the provider’s own app
Outlook, Thunderbird, and Apple Mail can continue accessing Gmail through IMAP or POP, according to Google. A desktop client can also provide a combined interface for multiple providers, while each provider’s own website or app remains an option for full account administration. Google’s notice on supported access methods.
Import old messages or migrate an organization
A one-time import can bring historical messages and contacts into Gmail, but it will not keep fetching new mail. For organizational accounts, Google Workspace administrators can use a migration path; that is distinct from a consumer inbox workaround. Google’s help page describes import and migration options.

What Gmailify users will lose
Gmailify applied some Gmail capabilities to eligible third-party accounts. When it ends, Google says those accounts will no longer get Gmailify’s spam protection, improved mobile notifications, inbox categories, or faster searches using advanced operators. The underlying third-party mailbox remains with its provider; these are Gmail features layered onto the account. Google lists the affected Gmailify features.
Other Gmail features that remain available
Google says third-party accounts can still be added in the Gmail mobile app. External clients including Outlook, Thunderbird, and Apple Mail can still access Gmail over IMAP or POP, and Gmail API access remains available. Gmail-to-Gmail aliases and Google Workspace “Send as” identities are not affected by the removal of third-party “Send as.” Google’s notice distinguishes the affected features from those that remain.

Be cautious with replacement tools
Google warns that third-party services or browser extensions offering to replace the feature may request email passwords or OAuth tokens. Google says it cannot guarantee those services’ safety, reliability, or data practices. Prefer the provider’s own forwarding settings, the Gmail app, or a trusted desktop client rather than handing mailbox access to an unfamiliar tool. Google’s security warning.
