Gmail’s quick-reply box lets Android users answer from a text field at the bottom of an open conversation instead of switching straight to a full-screen composer. Google announced the feature in 2024, then said it had rolled it back for Workspace customers on October 11, 2024. The announcement does not establish whether that rollout later resumed, so availability may depend on account type.
What changed in Gmail for Android
Previously, choosing Reply, Reply all, or Forward in a conversation opened a full-screen compose view. With quick reply, the text box appears at the bottom of the open conversation, keeping the message you are answering in view. Google described it as a convenient option for short, straightforward responses. Google’s announcement said users could reply without opening a new screen.
How to use quick reply
- Open a message in the Gmail app on Android.
- Tap the text box at the bottom of the conversation.
- Type your reply, then tap the send icon.
To switch to the full-screen composer, tap the expand icon in the reply box. Google said the expanded composer provides more formatting options. For general Android instructions on replying or replying to everyone, see Gmail Help.

Who had access, and what happened to the rollout?
Google’s August 26, 2024 announcement said the feature was available to personal Google accounts and Workspace Individual subscribers. Workspace Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains were to receive it gradually. Google later updated the same post on October 11, 2024: it said it had rolled the feature back for Workspace customers while evaluating performance and quality, and would provide an update when rollout resumed. The announcement does not say whether the Workspace rollout subsequently resumed, nor does it confirm that every account currently shows the box. It also said there was no admin control for the feature. If you do not see quick reply, the available information does not identify a setting or other fix that will enable it; ordinary Gmail reply instructions remain available in Gmail Help.
Why Google added a reply box at the bottom
The inline box was intended to make brief answers easier while keeping the original email visible. Google first described quick reply for personal accounts in a Gmail Community post on June 5, 2024, as a bottom-of-conversation text box that users could expand for longer responses.
