GB Test Lab is a diagnostic cartridge project for the original DMG-01 Game Boy. Its quick check runs memory, cartridge-slot, interrupt, and system tests and reports PASSED, FAILED, or INCOMPLETE. It can help you spot some faults, but a pass is not a full-console certification: several important parts cannot be tested by software.
What GB Test Lab checks
Creator Marcel Pflug describes GB Test Lab as a cartridge that examines the console it is plugged into and presents measurements and findings. The quick check runs four categories in sequence: memory, cartridge-slot, interrupt, and system checks. Pflug says it takes under a minute.
The result applies to those checks only. INCOMPLETE means a check did not run; it does not mean that check failed. A FAILED result identifies a problem within the tests performed, while PASSED means those checks completed successfully—not that every feature of the Game Boy works.
Additional tests and screens
Beyond the quick check, the menu includes button contact-bounce measurements, additional memory and sprite-transfer checks, interrupt tests, and named cartridge-slot address and data line checks. It can repeat slot testing while you gently move the cartridge, test a cartridge board’s mapper and memory, run link-port tests, perform burn-in testing, and show visual display patterns.

With suitable accessories, the software also offers a two-console cable screen that compares the timing of the consoles’ crystals, plus Game Boy Printer screens for communication and selected printer functions. These options add observations; they do not turn the cartridge into a complete hardware tester.
Which Game Boy models it supports
GB Test Lab is intended for the classic DMG-01, the original Game Boy. Pflug says it is not intended for the Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, or later models. The project’s first public version was recorded in its changelog in September 2026.

The creator’s article, “A Cartridge That Tests the Machine It Sits In,” documents the project’s target, features, setup, and limitations: Game Boy Museum. Its claims describe the creator’s project and have not been independently validated.
What you need to run it on real hardware
For a physical DMG-01, Pflug specifies a flash cartridge that supports MBC5 and 256 KB. A cartridge with a more limited mapper or memory capacity may show a black screen. Check both specifications before choosing a flash cartridge; the project’s mention of EverDrive does not establish compatibility for any particular model.

- Use fresh alkaline cells in the Game Boy. The creator recommends them because a flash cartridge draws more power than a game.
- If you want records to survive after power-off, the flash cartridge needs a working battery.
- For the optional two-console cable test, you need a second Game Boy, a link cable, and a second copy of the cartridge.
- For printed reports, you need a Game Boy Printer and thermal paper. The creator notes that Game Boy Printer paper has not been manufactured since the turn of the century, so this is a legacy-hardware option rather than an easy default.
Using the browser version
The creator also provides a browser version and a downloadable ROM. The browser version can help you view the interface, but emulation cannot reproduce the mechanical contact bounce of physical buttons. Nor can it test link-port or printer hardware that is not present. An emulator result therefore says nothing about the condition of those physical controls or ports on your original console.
What a pass cannot tell you
The DMG-01 does not expose every condition to software. According to Pflug, it has no analogue-to-digital converter for reading voltage; software cannot read the contrast or volume wheels; and the console cannot read back the image it displays. The speaker, amplifier, and headphone socket are also beyond the software-accessible registers. A console can pass the quick check and still have, for example, a dead speaker or scratched screen.

Display patterns and some interactive checks require a person to observe the screen or use their senses. Those are useful inspections, but they are not automatically measured findings. A visually acceptable pattern also cannot establish that every display-related component is healthy.
The linked-console timing comparison is relative
The cable test compares two consoles rather than checking one against a definitive timing reference. Pflug describes a measurement interval of about 3.5 seconds and an estimated uncertainty of about four parts per million. The project notes that two healthy crystals of the same grade may differ by about 100 parts per million, and labels differences under 200 parts per million as matched. Those figures are the creator’s reported method and interpretation, not independent validation. Since the test is relative, it cannot determine which console is out of specification without an additional reference.

How to use the results
Treat GB Test Lab as one layer of troubleshooting. A failed check can help narrow attention to a tested area; an incomplete check means you lack a result for that area. A pass is reassuring only for the checks that ran. Combine it with practical inspection of the screen, sound, controls, power, and any accessories you intend to use.
