As of October 20, 2026, GitHub Status reports Git Operations, API Requests, and Actions operational. The October 19 degradation involving Actions, Pages, and Webhooks is marked resolved. Because status changes quickly, check the official status page again when the failure occurs, then test the exact operation that is failing. A green status page rules out neither repository permissions nor a local DNS, proxy, firewall, credential, or rate-limit problem.
Use the workflow below to separate a GitHub-side incident from a problem affecting one repository, account, machine, network, or workflow.
Start with the official status page
Open GitHub Status before changing credentials or rewriting scripts. Compare the component named in the incident with your symptom:

- API Requests: REST and related API calls returning errors or timing out.
- Actions: workflow runs that remain queued, fail to start, or cannot connect to runners.
- Webhooks: deliveries that are delayed or failing.
- Pages: deployments or published sites that do not update.
Read the incident timeline, not just the colored indicator. An incident can be limited to writes, authentication, a transport, a region, or a subset of services. If the page is green, continue with local and repository checks; green means GitHub has not declared a broad platform incident, not that your account or network is healthy.

Record the time, repository, operation, transport, exact error text, HTTP status (for API calls), and whether another repository or network behaves differently. Those details make the scope visible and prevent repeated guesses.
A five-minute triage sequence
- Check status and incident history. Match Git Operations, API Requests, Actions, Webhooks, or Pages to the failed operation.
- Reproduce the smallest failing action. Try a read and a write separately: for example,
git ls-remote <remote-url>followed by a push of a harmless test branch. - Test scope. Try another repository you are authorized to access, or ask a teammate on a different network to repeat the operation.
- Classify the error. DNS and connection timeouts point to the path to GitHub; 401/403 responses point to authentication, permissions, or limits; 5xx responses point to a service or gateway problem.
- Preserve evidence. Save command output, response headers, workflow run IDs, runner labels, and timestamps before retrying.
Do not repeatedly retry a write operation while an incident is active. Queueing retries can amplify load and create confusing duplicate failures. Once status reports recovery, retry the original operation and confirm the resulting commit, run, or API mutation rather than assuming the first attempt completed.
When cloning or fetching fails
Clone and fetch are read operations, but they still depend on DNS, TLS, proxies, firewalls, repository existence, and credentials. Work from the outside in.

1. Confirm the exact remote and repository
git remote -v
git ls-remote https://github.com/OWNER/REPOSITORY.git
Replace the example with the repository’s current URL. A renamed, deleted, or private repository can produce an error that looks like downtime. Verify the owner and repository spelling in the browser and confirm that your account still has access.
2. Check DNS and the network path
nslookup github.com
# or
dig github.com
curl -I https://github.com
A DNS failure, proxy refusal, TLS error, or connection timeout occurs before GitHub can evaluate your repository permission. Test from a second network if policy allows. Temporarily bypass a misconfigured VPN or proxy only within your organization’s rules; corporate firewalls and organization network settings may intentionally block Git traffic.

3. Verify the transport and credentials
For HTTPS remotes, confirm that your credential helper is not returning an expired password or token. GitHub does not accept an account password for Git over HTTPS; use an approved token or credential manager. For SSH remotes, inspect the host key and loaded identities:
ssh -T git@github.com
GIT_SSH_COMMAND="ssh -v" git ls-remote git@github.com:OWNER/REPOSITORY.git
Do not paste tokens or private keys into an issue, support ticket, or shell transcript. If HTTPS fails but SSH works, or the reverse, the transport-specific path is implicated. Switching transports cannot repair a GitHub-side outage that affects the underlying Git operation.
4. Interpret common clone errors
| Symptom | Likely scope | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| “Could not resolve host” | DNS, resolver, VPN, or proxy | Resolve github.com and test another network. |
| “Connection timed out” | Firewall, proxy, routing, or service reachability | Use curl, compare HTTPS and SSH, and check organizational egress rules. |
| “Repository not found” | Wrong URL, deleted repository, or no permission | Verify the URL and membership; private repositories commonly return this wording. |
| “Permission denied (publickey)” | SSH key not loaded, untrusted, or unauthorized | Run ssh -T, inspect the agent, and confirm the key is attached to the intended account. |
| HTTP 401/403 during Git access | Invalid, expired, or unauthorized credential | Refresh the approved token or credential-manager entry and check repository access. |
When push fails but browsing works
Reading a repository in the web interface does not prove that writes are available. During GitHub’s October 7, 2026 incident, write operations failed across Git operations and several dependent services while reading data was largely unaffected. After recovery, GitHub reported that operations retried successfully and that no database data was lost.
1. Determine whether the failure is service-wide or repository-specific
Check Git Operations on the status page, then run:
git status
git remote -v
git fetch origin
If fetch works but push fails, the network path and read authorization may be fine while the write path, branch policy, or credential scope is not. Try pushing a new branch rather than a protected default branch, if your workflow permits:
git switch -c diagnose-push
git push -u origin diagnose-push
Delete the diagnostic branch afterward if it is not needed.

2. Check branch protection and permissions
A protected branch can reject a validly authenticated push because it requires a pull request, status checks, signed commits, or a particular actor. Confirm that your account, team, deploy key, or automation token has write permission to the repository and that the token has the required repository scope. An organization can also require SSO authorization or restrict which networks and applications may write.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
3. Check the remote and authentication method
git remote get-url origin
git config --get credential.helper
git config --get user.name
git config --get user.email
Changing user.name or user.email changes commit metadata; it does not grant permission. Correct the remote URL or refresh the credential in the approved manager. Never embed a token in a remote URL that could be saved in shell history or configuration.
4. Avoid destructive recovery
Do not force-push, reset, or delete local branches merely because a push failed. First verify whether the remote accepted the commit despite a dropped connection:
git fetch origin
git log --oneline --decorate --graph HEAD origin/BRANCH
If the commit is present remotely, stop retrying. If it is absent and status shows an active write incident, wait for recovery and retry once the incident is resolved.
When the GitHub API fails
Capture the complete response before changing code. The HTTP status, JSON body, request identifiers, and rate-limit headers distinguish an invalid request from a platform failure.

curl -i
-H "Accept: application/vnd.github+json"
-H "Authorization: Bearer $GITHUB_TOKEN"
https://api.github.com/rate_limit
Keep the token in an environment variable and redact it from logs. Record the status line, Retry-After when present, rate-limit headers, and any request ID.
Separate the error classes
| Response | What it usually means | Action |
|---|---|---|
| 401 Unauthorized | Missing, expired, malformed, or invalid token | Verify the token source, expiration, and authentication header; do not assume an outage. |
| 403 Forbidden | Insufficient permission, organization policy, primary rate limit, or secondary abuse limit | Read the response body and headers, confirm token scopes, and honor any retry guidance. |
| 404 Not Found | Wrong endpoint or an inaccessible private resource | Check the API path, owner, repository, and token visibility. |
| 409 Conflict | Valid request that conflicts with current resource state | Refresh the resource and resolve the stated conflict before retrying. |
| 422 Unprocessable Entity | Validation failure or an unacceptable parameter | Inspect the JSON error details; changing networks will not fix malformed input. |
| 429 or a 403 with rate-limit headers | Rate limiting | Back off, cache responses, reduce concurrency, and retry after the indicated window. |
| 500, 502, 503, or 504 | GitHub service, gateway, or transient upstream failure | Check API Requests status, preserve the response, and retry with bounded exponential backoff. |
Primary rate limits measure an account or token’s request allowance; secondary limits can be triggered by bursts or concurrency even when the primary counter is not exhausted. Treat the response headers and body as authoritative for the request that failed. If several unrelated endpoints return 5xx at the same time, correlate them with the status incident before modifying client authentication.
Make retries safe
Retry only idempotent reads automatically. For mutations such as creating issues, dispatching workflows, or merging, use an idempotency strategy where the API supports one, or query the resource afterward to determine whether the first request succeeded. Use exponential delays with a maximum attempt count and honor Retry-After; an infinite tight loop can turn a transient problem into a rate-limit outage for your own integration.
When GitHub Actions runs are queued or fail
An Actions problem can come from the platform, the event trigger, a runner, your network, or a third-party dependency. Open the workflow run summary first and record the run ID, event type, runner label, queue duration, and first failing log line.
1. Confirm the workflow actually triggered
Inspect the event that should have started the run. Commit-message annotations can skip workflows, and branch or path filters can exclude a change. A skipped run is different from a run waiting for a runner. Check the commit message, workflow on: filters, branch protections, and whether the event originated from a fork or a pull request with restricted secrets.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
2. Distinguish queueing from execution failure
- Queued with no runner assigned: inspect runner labels, organization and repository concurrency limits, and self-hosted runner availability.
- Runner assigned but steps do not start: inspect runner logs, image availability, permissions, and network access.
- Step starts then fails: treat the command, dependency, secret, or external service as the immediate cause; the platform may be healthy.
3. Check self-hosted runners and networking
Verify that the runner service is online, has the labels requested by the job, and can resolve and reach the required endpoints. DNS failures, firewalls, organization network settings, expired certificates, and third-party services can prevent registration or job execution. A self-hosted runner that appears online in the interface can still be unable to reach a package registry or deployment target.
4. Compare with platform status
GitHub recommends checking GitHub Status for real-time platform health. If Actions is degraded, avoid repeatedly cancelling and rerunning every job; preserve one representative run and wait for the incident update. If Actions is operational and only one runner pool is affected, focus on runner configuration and network diagnostics. Contact support after collecting run URLs, timestamps, runner labels, and relevant logs.
Why partial outages produce confusing symptoms
GitHub services do not fail as one indivisible system. The October 7, 2026 incident affected write operations involving Git operations, pull requests, issues, Actions, API, webhooks, authentication, Apps, code scanning, Codespaces, and Copilot, while reading data was largely unaffected. During the first window, 5.6% of web and API requests failed, peaking at 8.9%; up to 26% of Git authentication requests and 17% of Actions runs failed. GitHub reported no database data loss.
Recommended Free Tools
Transport can also matter. GitHub’s March 2026 availability report recorded approximately 6% errors for Git over HTTP while SSH was not impacted. If your security policy permits, testing the alternate supported transport can isolate a path-specific problem. It does not prove that the repository, credentials, or GitHub’s write service is healthy, and it cannot bypass a broad write outage.
The July 2026 availability report described a separate multi-service event affecting the Web UI, REST API, GraphQL API, Actions, Packages, Copilot, and Git operations, along with a runner-connectivity problem caused by an expired internal SSL certificate. Consequently, a queued Actions job can coexist with a repository page that loads normally.
Choose the right response from the symptom
| Observed pattern | Most useful discriminator | Preferred response |
|---|---|---|
| Many repositories cannot clone or fetch | Git Operations status plus DNS/transport tests | Wait if GitHub reports an incident; otherwise repair network or credentials. |
| Fetch works, push fails everywhere | Write-operation status and a new-branch push | Check incident state, then branch policy and token permissions. |
| One private repository fails | Repository URL and membership | Correct access or repository configuration. |
| API returns 401 or 403 | Body and rate-limit headers | Refresh authentication, scopes, or back off for limits. |
| API returns widespread 5xx | API Requests status and timestamps | Use bounded retries and wait for service recovery. |
| Actions queued across repositories | Actions status and runner labels | Preserve a representative run and follow the incident update. |
| Actions queued on one self-hosted pool | Runner service, labels, DNS, and firewall | Repair the runner or network rather than changing workflow code. |
After recovery: verify, then resume automation
- Recheck the status component and incident timeline.
- Repeat the exact failed operation once: clone, fetch, push, API mutation, or workflow rerun.
- Verify the resulting state remotely: commit exists, issue or deployment was created, or the workflow completed.
- Review queued jobs and scheduled integrations for duplicates before releasing accumulated retries.
- Document the timestamp, error class, transport, affected repositories, and final recovery so future incidents can be compared.
For recurring failures, standardize diagnostics in runbooks: status-page check, DNS test, HTTPS and SSH comparison, token and scope verification, rate-limit capture, runner health check, and escalation contacts. Keep retries bounded and observable, and alert on operation-specific failures instead of treating every GitHub error as a total outage.
When to contact an administrator or GitHub Support
Contact your repository or organization administrator when the failure is limited to one repository, branch protection, SSO, network policy, token scope, or self-hosted runner. Contact GitHub Support when the status page is clear but unrelated repositories and transports fail consistently, or when a documented incident does not explain a persistent error after recovery. Include the repository URL (if allowed), account or organization, UTC timestamps, operation and transport, exact error text, HTTP status and headers with secrets removed, workflow run IDs, and steps already tested. This evidence lets support distinguish a platform incident from a policy or account problem without requesting sensitive credentials.
