In strongly scattering materials, the spread in how well light can be focused may reveal long-range correlations that the average focusing result misses. A 2026 optical experiment found that enhancement fluctuations grew beyond a correlation-free theoretical prediction even while the mean enhancement stayed close to it. The finding makes statistical variation—not just focusing performance—a possible probe of complex media.
How can light be focused through an opaque material?
Here, “opaque” means strongly scattering, not that no light can pass through. Light travels along many paths through a disordered material; the waves emerging from those paths interfere to form a speckle pattern. Wavefront shaping adjusts the phase of the incoming light so the waves interfere constructively at a chosen transmitted position.
The enhancement factor compares the optimized intensity at a target with the diffuse background intensity. For multiple targets, the study analyzes the maximum enhancement using the largest eigenvalue of a focusing operator derived from a sub-transmission matrix.
What the researchers measured
Schehr and Yılmaz measured an optical transmission matrix using phase-shifting interferometry. Their sample was a densely packed zinc oxide nanoparticle layer on a cover slip, approximately 10 μm thick, with a transport mean free path of 1 μm. They selected subsets of input segments and output positions to form sub-matrices, studying 100–1,000 controlled input channels and one to five output targets. These describe this experiment, not requirements for wavefront shaping generally. Nature Communications paper

What are the “giant fluctuations”?
They are unusually broad variations in the enhancement factor across measurements, compared with a theory that assumes the relevant long-range correlations are negligible. The researchers used exact finite-size predictions from a Laguerre–Wishart random-matrix model as that correlation-free baseline. Accounting for finite channel numbers makes this comparison more appropriate than relying only on large-channel approximations.
In conditions where long-range mesoscopic correlations were negligible, the model accurately described both the average enhancement and its fluctuations. In the strongly scattering zinc oxide sample, however, measured fluctuations increasingly exceeded the baseline as more input channels were controlled. The mean enhancement could remain essentially unchanged.

Why can the fluctuations reveal more than the average?
The mean compresses a distribution into one number. Different underlying scattering behavior can therefore produce similar average enhancement, even when the measurements vary very differently from one configuration to another. In this experiment, the growing excess spread relative to the correlation-free prediction was evidence of long-range mesoscopic correlations: connections between light paths that cannot be treated as statistically independent.
The observable is the statistical enhancement from controlled wavefront-shaping configurations. The researchers did not directly image individual hidden paths; they interpreted the excess fluctuations in the strongly scattering regime as a signature of correlations among them. As Hasan Yilmaz put it in Saint Louis University’s account of the work, “These giant fluctuations are not simply noise. They reveal hidden connections between the many paths that light takes through a complex scattering medium.”

What does the experiment establish—and what does it not?
The paper reports sensitivity to long-range correlations with roughly 200 or fewer controlled input channels and one output channel. This is a regime demonstrated in the study, not a universal instrument specification. The authors contrast this approach with conventional methods based on transmission eigenvalues, which may require very large transmission matrices.
- Demonstrated: an optical wavefront-shaping experiment through a zinc oxide nanoparticle layer, with excess enhancement fluctuations interpreted as evidence of long-range mesoscopic correlations.
- Not demonstrated: that every opaque material has the same fluctuation behavior, or that the experiment directly reveals individual light paths.
- Potential, not a result of this experiment: applications in high-contrast imaging and high-precision optical metrology.
The authors suggest that the mechanism could extend to acoustic, elastic, microwave, and matter waves because it involves multiple scattering and finite-size statistics. Those extensions remain prospective; the reported experiment used light.

Does this mean scientists can see through biological tissue?
No clinical imaging system or tissue-imaging result is established by this study. It examines controlled optical focusing through a model scattering sample and discusses biomedical imaging as a possible application area. Its contribution is a way to use the distribution of focusing outcomes as a statistical probe of correlations in the tested medium—not a demonstration of seeing through tissue in clinical practice.
