Use Atsu’s other abilities when openings arise, and give yourself room to explore Ezo instead of treating the map as a checklist.
How to approach combat as a beginner
PlayStation’s combat guidance puts weapon switching at the center of fights: “Each weapon serves a specific purpose, and knowing when to switch will determine your success in combat.” Treat that as a reason to learn each weapon’s role and adapt as a fight changes—not as evidence that one weapon is universally best. PlayStation does not provide a complete enemy-to-weapon counter chart in its overview, so avoid assuming a specific weapon is the required answer to a particular enemy. Use Atsu’s other abilities when they fit the moment
Weapons are not Atsu’s only tools. PlayStation describes her disarming enemies and turning their weapons against them, tackling foes while mounted, and calling on her wolf companion in battle. Think of these as additional options to notice during combat; the official overview does not specify exact button sequences or a prescriptive order for using them. PlayStation’s combat overview.
Let the controller feedback inform, not dictate, your setup
Ghost of Yōtei is a PlayStation 5 game, and PlayStation highlights DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers as part of its combat presentation. They can add tactile feedback, but they are a feature of the experience—not a separate combat system you must master to begin playing. Official PlayStation game page.

- Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
- Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
- An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
- Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.
Explore Ezo at your own pace
The game takes place in Ezo, in northern Japan, and pairs expansive exploration with intricate combat. Exploration is a central part of the experience, not merely the gap between fights. Follow what interests you and let curiosity set the pace; the official materials cited here do not establish a required region order, a particular navigation tactic, or a collectible route. What “survival” means in the current edition announcement
PlayStation’s August 12, 2026 announcement says the Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition adds Echoes of Sekigahara, a narrative expansion, and Most Wanted, a combat survival mode, alongside quality-of-life updates. The announcement gives a high-level description rather than detailed survival tactics.
