To get started with the legacy RAK WisCam module, join its Wi-Fi access point, open the local RTSP stream, and use its serial interface when you need to find a router-assigned address or debug setup. The documented default AP address is 192.168.100.1 and its password is 12345678; SSID names vary in the old setup materials, so use the network name actually broadcast by your board.

What WisCam is—and what it is not

WisCam is a Linux-based Wi-Fi video development module from RAK, intended for maker and embedded projects rather than as a current plug-and-play home security camera. RAK documents Arduino UNO hardware compatibility and a UART interface for development; the project repository links setup guides, design files, source-build instructions, and Android and iOS SDKs. Those archived resources do not establish that the software or apps are maintained today. See the WisCam repository and RAK’s WisCam Open Source Video Module Specification V1.0.

That specification says, “WisCam can record up to 640×480@30FPS RGB MJPEG video.” This is a vendor-stated capability, not a measurement of a particular board. It also lists mobile-app source and integrated Nabto P2P; neither feature confirms that a legacy app or service account works with current phones or services.

Connect directly to the WisCam access point

  1. Power the board and check its Wi-Fi networks. The 2017 Hackster tutorial describes an access point with a WisEye-style name, while RAK’s Program Guide describes the default SSID as “WisCam” followed by the device MAC address. The sources differ, so select the exact network your board broadcasts rather than expecting one universal SSID. See the Hackster setup tutorial and the RAK WisCam Program Guide V1.0.
  2. Join the camera network. The Program Guide documents 12345678 as the default password and 192.168.100.1 as the camera’s address in its default AP configuration. Treat these as legacy defaults, not secure credentials for an untrusted network.
  3. Open the stream in an RTSP-capable player. With your computer or device connected to the camera AP, enter rtsp://192.168.100.1:554/cam1/mpeg4 in an RTSP client. The tutorial describes playback with VLC for Windows. It also refers to historical WisCam phone apps, but their current availability and compatibility are not established.

Choose between direct AP mode and router-connected STA mode

AP mode creates a direct client-to-camera connection. STA mode has the camera join your router, which is more convenient when another device on that network needs to view it, but the camera then receives its address from the router via DHCP.

Mode Connection path Address discovery When access fails
AP Client connects directly to WisCam Program Guide documents 192.168.100.1 for default AP configuration Use the documented GPIOA5 recovery procedure, after checking the board revision and pinout
STA WisCam connects to a Wi-Fi router DHCP address; the Program Guide says it may not appear in list, so use serial access and ifconfig Restore AP/factory mode with GPIOA5, then restart as described by the tutorial

Connect WisCam to your router

  1. Start in AP mode and connect to the camera using the documented default access details.
  2. Set the Wi-Fi parameters. The RAK Program Guide describes changing the SSID and AUTH_KEY values through the camera’s HTTP parameter interface. Follow the guide’s parameter procedure for the installed firmware; the available setup information does not establish a universal current web-interface path.
  3. Restart the board so it can join the configured router in STA mode.
  4. Find the DHCP address if needed. The guide warns that a DHCP-assigned address may not be visible through the list command. Connect to the serial port and run ifconfig to inspect the network interface address.
  5. Use the router address for viewing. Once you know the camera’s address on the router network, use the RTSP path :554/cam1/mpeg4 with that address in an RTSP client; the tutorial’s full URL uses the AP address and confirms the path and port.

Use UART for debugging and address discovery

A serial console is useful when Wi-Fi setup is inaccessible or you need to inspect the DHCP address. The Hackster tutorial’s parts list names a SparkFun FTDI Basic Breakout – 3.3V, jumper wires, a 1 kΩ resistor, and a soldering iron, and discusses serial-port debugging. A 3.3 V FTDI USB-to-serial adapter is therefore a practical starting point, but confirm the WisCam revision’s pinout and signal voltage before wiring any adapter; the parts list alone does not verify compatibility with every USB-to-serial device.

Use the UART pins identified for your exact board, connect signal and ground as appropriate for that pinout, and avoid assuming that similarly shaped adapters use the same voltage or pin order. After establishing the serial connection, the Program Guide’s ifconfig instruction can help identify the camera’s router-assigned IP address.

Recover access if router setup fails

The RAK Program Guide and Hackster tutorial describe pulling GPIOA5 (also written GPA5) low for about five seconds to restore AP/factory mode. The tutorial then says to restart the board. Because the operation depends on the correct physical pin, verify the GPIOA5 location against the diagram for your exact board revision before applying it; do not guess from a generic pinout.

Legacy hardware and network cautions

The tutorial identifies a Nuvoton N32905R3DN processor and describes the module’s historical Linux and Wi-Fi stack. These details provide context for an older embedded device, not evidence of current security updates or safe operation on an exposed network. The available material does not verify present-day hardware availability, firmware maintenance, mobile-app compatibility, or the security of its legacy networking and cloud behavior. Keep experiments on a controlled local network and do not treat the documented default password or old P2P feature as an assurance of security.
