Choose an installation route
The official Elixir installation guide lists operating-system package managers and dedicated installers, install scripts, version managers, precompiled packages, source builds, and Docker images. Use its instructions for your OS: commands and available packages differ, and a package manager may offer a version older than the latest Elixir release.

For the current versions listed by the installation page, Elixir is v1.20.4 and requires Erlang 27.0 or later. The page’s example install scripts specify Elixir 1.20.4 with OTP 28.4, but that is an example pairing—not the only supported one. Its precompiled packages cover OTP 27, 28, and 29, and its Windows installer listings include separate Elixir 1.20.4 builds for those OTP versions. Match an installer or precompiled download to a supported Erlang/OTP version rather than assuming every combination works.
Make the commands available in your terminal
Elixir’s bin directory must be on your PATH for commands such as elixir, iex, and mix to work. Depending on how you installed Elixir, Erlang binaries may also need to be on PATH. For a Unix shell, the official guide shows this form:

export PATH="$PATH:/path/to/elixir/bin"Replace /path/to/elixir/bin with the actual directory from your installation. Windows PATH setup depends on the installer or package manager you chose; follow that method’s instructions. If your terminal says a command is unknown, check the relevant binary directories and open a new terminal after editing your shell profile.
Verify the installation
Open a terminal or PowerShell and run:
elixir --versionThe command should print the Elixir and Erlang/OTP versions available to that terminal. The current installation page lists Elixir v1.20.4 and requires Erlang 27.0 or later. Separately, the versioned introduction guide says its instructions apply to Elixir 1.18.0 onwards and Erlang/OTP 27 onwards; those guide minimums are not the same as the latest release listed on the installation page. Try Elixir in IEx
IEx is Elixir’s interactive shell: enter an expression, press Return, and inspect the result immediately. Start it with:
iexIn Windows PowerShell, enter iex.bat instead, because iex is already a PowerShell command. Try these expressions at the IEx prompt:

The .exs extension is used for a script you run directly with the elixir command. This gives you a working first program without creating a project.
Move from a script to a Mix project
When you want to organize code, compile it, add dependencies, or write tests, use Mix, Elixir’s build tool. The Introduction to Mix walks through creating a project. Its minimal example starts with:

mix testA generated project includes a mix.exs project file, source code under lib, and tests under test. Mix is useful for that project workflow, but IEx and the elixir command are enough to begin learning the language.
