To connect the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller (model HAC-013) to a Windows PC, plug it in with a USB-C data cable or pair it over Bluetooth in Windows. Then check Steam > Settings > Controller and enable Steam Input for Switch Pro controllers if needed. A connection in Windows does not guarantee that every game will recognize the controller, so confirm input in a controller-compatible game.
This guide covers the original Switch Pro Controller—not the separate Switch 2 Pro Controller. You do not need a special receiver for the basic wired or Bluetooth setup.
What do you need before connecting the controller?
For a wired connection, you need the controller and a USB-C cable that carries data, plus an available USB port on the PC. For Bluetooth, your PC needs working Bluetooth, either built in or through a USB Bluetooth adapter. In both cases, a game or input layer must also support the controller before you can play.
- Identify the controller: Nintendo identifies the original official Switch Pro Controller as model HAC-013, including special editions. Advice for that controller should not automatically be applied to the newer Switch 2 Pro Controller. Nintendo’s controller identification page distinguishes the models.
- Choose a connection: A data-capable USB-C cable is the simplest first option. Bluetooth avoids a cable during play, but requires Windows pairing and a working Bluetooth radio.
- Plan for game support: Windows detecting the device, Steam recognizing it, and a particular game accepting its input are separate checks. Steam Input can help with Steam games, but it is not a promise that every game or launcher will work.
Nintendo calls the cable included with the original controller HAC-010. If you still have it, it is a reasonable cable to try first. However, a charging light only shows that power is reaching the controller; it does not prove that the cable is carrying data or that the PC is receiving button input.

If you need to buy something, start with the missing connection requirement rather than assuming a specialized controller receiver is necessary. For USB, look for a USB-C cable that explicitly supports data transfer, not just charging. For Bluetooth, a USB Bluetooth adapter is relevant only if your PC lacks working Bluetooth. The 8BitDo USB Wireless Adapter 2 is another optional, specifically documented route, but it has limitations described below. No current price or purchase requirement follows from these setup steps.
How do you connect a Switch Pro Controller to a PC with USB?
Use a USB-C cable that supports data, let Windows detect the controller, and then verify it in Steam or in a game that supports controllers. Wired is also the most useful first connection to try when diagnosing a problem.
- Connect the cable. Plug the USB-C end into the controller and the other end into a USB port on the PC. Start with the supplied cable if available, or use another known data-capable cable.
- Give Windows a moment to detect it. A charging indicator alone is not a successful input test. If Windows shows no device or the controller receives power but does not respond, try another USB port and a cable known to carry data before changing software settings.
- Check Steam’s controller page. Open Steam and go to Steam > Settings > Controller. Look for the Switch Pro controller and its Steam Input setting. Menu wording can change between Steam client versions, so use the current Controller page rather than relying on old screenshots.
- Test in a compatible game. Launch a game that supports controller input and check whether its controls respond. If Steam recognizes the controller but the game does not, investigate that game’s controller support and configuration rather than assuming the physical connection failed.
Nintendo’s published USB pairing instructions describe connecting the controller to a Switch dock; they are not a guarantee of compatibility with every PC game. For the PC, treat Windows detection, Steam configuration, and in-game input as distinct stages.
If USB is your first test, keep it simple: use one cable and one port at a time, then check for a change in Windows or Steam. This isolates whether the failure follows the cable, the port, or the software path. A light that indicates charging is useful evidence that power is reaching the controller, but it does not tell you whether the PC has received a data connection. Avoid moving straight to driver utilities on that evidence alone.
How do you pair it with Windows 11 over Bluetooth?
Put the original controller in pairing mode with its SYNC button, then add it from Windows 11’s Bluetooth settings. Once it appears as a paired device, check Steam and a compatible game separately.
- Confirm Bluetooth is available and on. If the PC does not have Bluetooth, Microsoft says you can use a USB Bluetooth adapter. Follow the adapter’s setup instructions and confirm Bluetooth is switched on in Windows.
- Put the controller in pairing mode. Press the small SYNC button on the controller. Nintendo’s console-pairing instructions specify holding SYNC for at least one second; use the controller’s indicator behavior to confirm it is ready to pair.
- Open the Windows pairing screen. In Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices > Add device, choose Bluetooth, and select the controller when it appears. The displayed device name may vary, so do not depend on one exact label.
- Verify the connection. After Windows lists it as paired, open Steam > Settings > Controller and check whether Steam recognizes it. Then test in a game that supports controller input.
Bluetooth pairing is only the PC-to-controller connection step. If Windows reports that the controller is connected but a game receives no input, continue with Steam and game-level checks rather than repeating pairing indefinitely.

Keep the controller near the PC while pairing and make sure it has charge. If it was already paired with another device, do not assume a Windows entry means it is actively connected and ready for play. Confirm Windows reports the connection, then test Steam. The original controller’s SYNC-button timing above is for its standard pairing procedure. A separate adapter can have its own instructions: 8BitDo, for example, specifies holding SYNC for three seconds when pairing to its USB Wireless Adapter 2. That is not the standard Windows Bluetooth instruction.
How do you make Steam recognize the controller?
Check the Controller page in Steam Settings and enable the Switch Pro Steam Input option if it is off. Steam Input provides controller configuration, but a game’s own support and settings still matter.
Valve announced Switch Pro controller support in 2018 and documented a global option called Use Nintendo Button Layout. The old setting name Nintendo Switch Configuration Support belongs to that historical interface; do not assume it is the current menu label. A guide updated in January 2026 describes the contemporary control as Enable Steam Input for Switch Pro controllers under Steam > Settings > Controller. Steam’s wording and layout may change, so look for the current Switch Pro or Steam Input control on that page.
If the controller is visible to Steam but not working as expected, check these points:
- Steam Input: Confirm that Steam Input for Switch Pro controllers is enabled where the setting is available.
- Game support: Test a game that accepts controller input. A game that expects a different controller type or has controller input disabled may not respond as expected.
- Button layout: Nintendo’s A/B and X/Y positions differ from Xbox-style prompts. Steam’s Nintendo button-layout option swaps A/B and X/Y in the loaded configuration. If prompts and physical buttons seem mismatched, check both Steam’s layout option and the game’s own control or prompt settings.
- Non-Steam games: Adding a non-Steam game to Steam is one possible way to use Steam Input, but it does not guarantee compatibility with every launcher or title.
Valve’s announcement explains the purpose of the layout option, but its 2018 interface is not a reliable guide to today’s exact menu appearance. Use the live Settings page for current controls.

In practice, test the individual game after enabling it. If one title fails, try another known controller-compatible game to separate a game-specific limitation from a general connection problem. For games launched outside Steam, adding the title to Steam may be worth trying, but it is an option rather than a universal fix.

Which connection method should you choose?
Try direct USB first if you want the fewest setup steps or need to isolate a connection problem. Choose Bluetooth for ordinary wireless play if the PC has working Bluetooth. A dedicated receiver is an optional alternative, not a requirement.
| Option | What you need | Why choose it | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct USB | The controller and a USB-C data cable | Simple first connection; useful for separating cable and PC-detection problems from wireless pairing issues | Charging does not prove that data or game input is working. Steam and game support still matter. |
| PC Bluetooth | The controller and working PC Bluetooth, built in or added with an adapter | Wireless connection without a dedicated controller receiver | Pair in Windows, then verify Steam and the game independently. |
| 8BitDo USB Wireless Adapter 2 | The controller and the optional adapter | A manufacturer-documented route for connecting a Switch Pro controller to Windows, with an XInput mode | 8BitDo says one controller connects per adapter. For its Windows connection, the manufacturer excludes motion control, NFC, HD rumble, and certain indicators. |
The receiver option is relevant if you specifically want its documented connection or XInput mode; it is not necessary for normal USB or PC Bluetooth setup. Its pairing instructions are separate from Windows Bluetooth pairing: 8BitDo tells users to hold SYNC for three seconds when first pairing to that adapter. Do not apply that adapter-specific timing to the standard Windows Bluetooth procedure.
These options solve different needs rather than representing a guaranteed performance ranking. USB removes the Bluetooth pairing step and is a useful diagnostic baseline, but still depends on a data cable and game support. Built-in or added PC Bluetooth avoids a cable and a specialized receiver, but requires Windows pairing. The 8BitDo adapter is a product-specific alternative and can provide XInput mode, but its stated Windows limitations include motion control, NFC, HD rumble, and certain indicators; one controller connects to each adapter. Do not assume it preserves every controller feature or that you need to purchase it for ordinary setup.

What should you do if the controller will not connect?
First work out which stage is failing: physical USB data, Windows Bluetooth pairing, Steam recognition, or the game itself. Fix the earliest failing stage before changing later settings.
It does not appear over Bluetooth
- Confirm that Bluetooth is present and turned on; use a USB Bluetooth adapter if the PC lacks Bluetooth.
- Charge the controller, bring it close to the PC, and press SYNC to enter pairing mode.
- If it still does not appear, Windows 11 has a Bluetooth devices discovery setting under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices > Device settings; Microsoft documents an Advanced discovery option for devices that are not found.
- Check that the controller is not simply waiting to reconnect to a device it was previously paired with. Remove stale pairings if needed, then retry Add device.
Exact Windows labels can shift between releases. Microsoft’s Bluetooth pairing and troubleshooting pages are the appropriate reference if the Settings screen differs.
Windows lists it, but it will not reconnect
Remove the controller from Windows Bluetooth devices and add it again. Microsoft also recommends the Get Help Bluetooth troubleshooter and checking for Windows updates when a Bluetooth device will not connect. Re-pairing is more useful here than repeatedly pressing buttons without removing the existing entry.

USB charges the controller, but there is no input
Do not diagnose a driver problem from the charging light alone. Try a known data-capable cable and another USB port, then check whether Windows detects the device. If Windows does, check Steam’s Controller page; if Steam does, test a controller-compatible game and its input settings.
Steam sees it, but a game ignores it
Confirm that the game supports controller input, check Steam Input, and test another compatible game if available. For a non-Steam title, adding it to Steam may provide a Steam Input route, but neither that step nor Windows detection guarantees that a particular game or launcher will accept the controller.
The buttons do not match the on-screen prompts
Check Steam’s Use Nintendo Button Layout option and the game’s own button layout or prompt scheme. The Nintendo button positions can differ from Xbox-style prompts, so a controller can be connected and responding while the displayed labels still seem wrong.
Use the first failed stage to choose the next step: if Windows cannot pair over Bluetooth, troubleshoot Bluetooth discovery or remove and re-add the Windows device; if Windows connects but Steam does not show the controller, inspect Steam’s Controller page; if Steam sees it but the game does not, check that title’s input support and settings. For USB, test a different known data cable and port before treating a power light as evidence of successful data transfer. This avoids changing unrelated settings when the connection has not reached that stage.
How do you reconnect the controller to a Switch afterward?
Pair it with the Switch again using Nintendo’s documented console procedure: connect it to the dock with the included cable, or use Controllers > Change Grip and Order on the console and press SYNC. Reconnecting to the console does not mean the PC Bluetooth pairing will be preserved as the active connection; verify the target device when switching between them.

Valve’s January 21, 2026 client notes report re-enabled wired support for the Switch 2 controller, while a January 2026 PC guide describes USB support but not the same Steam Bluetooth route for that newer model. Those details should not be used to infer that the original controller’s Bluetooth steps, or its feature support, apply unchanged to Switch 2 hardware. Check current Nintendo and Steam guidance for the newer controller before following generation-specific instructions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the cable that came with the Pro Controller?
Nintendo identifies the original controller’s included cable as HAC-010. It is a sensible first cable to try, but if it only charges and the PC receives no input, test a cable known to carry data.
How long should I hold SYNC to pair the original controller with Windows?
Nintendo’s documented console-pairing procedure says to hold SYNC for at least one second. The three-second instruction sometimes seen in adapter directions is specific to the 8BitDo receiver’s own pairing process, not the normal Windows Bluetooth flow.
Recommended Free Tools
Why do the button prompts show Xbox letters when I have a Nintendo controller?
Some games use Xbox-style prompts even when another controller is connected. Steam’s Nintendo button-layout setting changes the A/B and X/Y mapping in its loaded configuration, but it does not guarantee that every game will display Nintendo-style labels.
Do I need an 8BitDo adapter to connect the controller to a PC?
No. The original Pro Controller can connect by USB-C or by the PC’s Bluetooth. The 8BitDo USB Wireless Adapter 2 is optional; it offers a documented Windows connection and XInput mode, but 8BitDo says one controller connects per adapter and lists feature limitations for Windows use.
Why does my controller charge over USB but not work in a game?
A charging light shows that power is reaching the controller, not that the cable carries data or that Windows has detected input. Try a known data-capable cable and another USB port, then check Windows detection, Steam’s Controller page, and the game’s controller support in that order.
Windows says the controller is paired. Why does my game still ignore it?
Pairing confirms the Windows connection, not that Steam or the game accepts input. Check Steam Input, test in a controller-compatible game, and review the particular game’s controller settings. Adding a non-Steam game to Steam may help use Steam Input, but does not guarantee support.

Can I connect the original Switch Pro Controller wirelessly if my PC has no Bluetooth?
You need working Bluetooth for the standard Windows wireless pairing route. Microsoft says a USB Bluetooth adapter can add Bluetooth to a PC that lacks it. A dedicated receiver such as the 8BitDo USB Wireless Adapter 2 is another optional route, with its own pairing process and documented limitations.
The Bottom Line
For the original HAC-013, start with a USB-C data cable or pair it through Windows Bluetooth, then verify Steam Input and test a controller-compatible game. If it charges but does not respond, check the cable and USB port first; if Windows connects but a game ignores it, check Steam and that game’s input support. A dedicated receiver is optional, and Switch 2 controller instructions should be checked separately.
