Yes. Add a game to your Steam Wishlist, verify the email address on your account, and enable wishlist release and sale notifications in your account settings or Steam Mobile. Steam alerts cover specific events—not every price change: sale notifications require a discount of at least 20% that lasts more than eight hours and applies to the game’s cheapest package. There is no built-in field for a custom target such as “tell me when it reaches $15.”
How do I add a game and turn on Steam wishlist alerts?
Use the Steam account and contact address where you want to receive alerts. The game does not need to be installed or purchased, and following it in the Community is not required.
Add the game to your Wishlist
- Sign in to the Steam account that should receive the notifications.
- Open the game’s storefront page. Use the full store page, not a search-result preview.
- Select Add to your Wishlist on the left side of the page. The control should change to show that the game is already listed.
- Confirm it appears under Store → Wishlist. In the desktop client, hover over Store and select Wishlist; the same route works in a browser while signed in.
You can reorder items by dragging them or entering a number beside a title. To remove one, use the Remove link beneath its name, or open its store page, choose the On Wishlist dropdown, and select Remove from your Wishlist. Steam Support describes adding a title from its storefront page and the Add to your Wishlist control.
Enable release and sale notifications
Steam’s settings have moved and labels can vary between clients. Look for the wishlist release and sale rows rather than relying on an older screenshot or one remembered checkbox name.

- Open your profile menu in the upper-right corner and choose Account Details → Manage Email Preferences. Valve’s older documented path uses these labels. While signed in, the preference page is also at store.steampowered.com/account/emailoptout.
- If that link opens a general notification page, look for Wishlist Activity. The sale row may read An item on my wishlist is on sale; release wording may refer to release, Early Access, or transition to full release. Older interfaces may use A discount is applied to an item on my wishlist.
- Tick the Email channel for the events you want. The sale row may also offer Client Toast, Mobile App, and Feed. Reports of the current settings page place the release and new-demo rows under email-only controls; available channels can change.
- If you use wishlist categories, check Only notify me about these wishlist categories. Leave it set to All to receive alerts for the full list, or select only the categories you intend to monitor.
- Save if the page presents a save control, then reopen the preferences and confirm the choices persisted.
For desktop alerts, Steam’s client also has wishlist sale controls under Steam → Settings → Notifications. The bell at the top of the client opens notifications; choose View all to inspect history.
Verify your email address
Email alerts require a verified contact address as well as the relevant wishlist preference. In Account Details, confirm the address is marked Verified. To change it, use Steam → Settings → Account → Change contact email…, then follow the confirmation link Steam sends to the new address.
Set up phone alerts
Install Steam Mobile, sign in to the same Steam account, and enable Mobile App on the wishlist sale row if that channel is offered. Also allow notifications at the phone’s operating-system level: on iPhone, open Settings → Notifications → Steam → Allow Notifications; on Android, open Settings → Notifications → App notifications → Steam. Android labels differ by device and version. Focus modes, notification summaries, and battery restrictions can prevent a permitted alert from appearing as a banner.
What does Steam notify you about?
Steam’s documented wishlist triggers cover game availability, qualifying discounts, and a developer-controlled demo announcement. Valve’s living Steamworks Wishlists documentation, verified October 29, 2026, says these triggers may change.
- A game launches. A wishlister may receive email and/or a mobile push when a title becomes available in Early Access or as a full release. The developer does not need to press an extra notification button for the launch alert.
- An Early Access game becomes a full release. Steam can send another email to people who have the game on their Wishlist at the time of the transition.
- A qualifying promotional discount begins. The offer must satisfy the discount rules below. Valve’s rules cover different kinds of discount, including curated features, weeklong deals, and custom-configured discounts; the deal’s name alone does not determine eligibility.
- A developer announces a demo. Valve’s July 2026 wishlist announcement says players can be notified when a demo is released for a wishlisted game. Steamworks documentation describes this as a developer-controlled, one-time send from the demo app landing page, available up to two weeks after the demo becomes public.
Valve’s July 2026 announcement also says Steam highlights when a wishlisted game has a demo available. That is distinct from receiving an alert at the moment a new demo is published.
What qualifies as a Steam sale alert?
A price reduction only triggers the wishlist sale notification if it clears all three documented tests. The relevant price is the offer on the cheapest package for the game in the store region shown to your signed-in account.

- Package: the discount must apply to the lowest-priced package. If a game has a $20 regular package and a $30 Deluxe package, discounting only Deluxe does not qualify; the Regular package must also be discounted.
These are Valve’s current Steamworks requirements as of 2026. A Daily Deal, Midweek Deal, or Weekend Deal can qualify, but those names are examples, not a promise that every markdown will trigger a notice. Valve’s Steamworks documentation says qualifying emails typically go out within a few hours, though high-volume periods can take longer. One email may include several titles; Valve’s FAQ says notification emails may be sent over multiple hours depending on how many users need to receive them.

Steam’s wishlist alerts are discount notifications, not a complete feed of price changes or store activity. The documented wishlist triggers do not include these events:
- A price increase, a news post, a trailer replacement, or a change to the game’s release date.
- A discount below 20%, or one that lasts eight hours or less.
- A sale on only a more expensive package when the cheapest package is not discounted.
- A Free to Keep giveaway. Valve’s Free to Keep documentation says wishlist owners are not notified about these offers.
- A custom price or percent threshold, such as “notify me at $15” or “only alert me at 60% off.” Steam’s wishlist notification settings do not include a target-price field.
A store-wide message about a major sale is a separate notification type; it is not an alert that a particular wishlisted game has been discounted. If you want to know whether a current offer is unusually low, use price history or another tracking method rather than treating Steam’s discount alert as a price-history service.
Why didn’t I get a Steam wishlist email?
Check the account, event rules, preferences, and cooldown in that order. A missing email does not necessarily mean the game was never discounted; it may not have met Valve’s trigger conditions or your account may not have been eligible for that message.
- Confirm the Wishlist and account. Open Store → Wishlist while signed in to the account whose email you checked. Make sure the game is still listed there.
- Check the matching preference row. In Account Details → Manage Email Preferences or the current Wishlist Activity settings, confirm Email is enabled for sale or release alerts as appropriate. If categories are filtered, temporarily set the category filter to All.
- Check verification. The contact address must show Verified. A purchase receipt or Steam Guard code arriving successfully does not confirm that wishlist messages are enabled.
- Search other mail folders. Look in spam, promotions, and any quarantine service attached to your email account. Check that you are not mistaking a general Steam sale announcement for a per-game wishlist alert.
- Check whether the sale qualified. Verify the discount percentage, duration, and cheapest-package price on the store page for your region. A deluxe-only markdown or a brief offer can appear on the store without meeting the notification rules.
- Allow for the per-game cooldown. Steam limits repeated messages about the same App ID; an earlier launch, demo, or sale notice can suppress another notification for a time.
- For a missing push, check the phone path. Confirm Steam Mobile is signed into the same account, Mobile App is enabled where offered, and OS notifications are allowed. Review focus and battery settings if the alert appears in the app but not on the lock screen.
- Check Steam’s notification history. If the notice appears in the client bell but not in the inbox, focus on email preferences and delivery. If it appears in Steam Mobile without a banner, focus on phone permissions.
If the issue persists, contact Steam Support with the game’s store link, sale dates, screenshots of the relevant preferences, and which notification surfaces did or did not show the alert. Valve publishes no delivery rate, open rate, or percentage of wishlisters who receive these messages, so an individual missing email cannot be compared with an official delivery benchmark.

How long can Steam wait between alerts for the same game?
Steam applies a cooldown per App ID—the individual game’s store identifier—not per studio. Valve’s Steamworks documentation says customers notified about an App ID within the previous two weeks will not receive additional communication about it until the cooldown ends; the FAQ describes the interval as one to two weeks, and Valve says high-traffic periods such as seasonal sales can extend it.
The practical consequence is that two otherwise valid events can overlap. For example, a launch notice and a qualifying discount close together may not produce two emails to the same player. A demo notification also shares the same per-game cooldown. Valve says discount emails typically arrive within a few hours, but can take longer during busy periods; it stops trying to send an email that has been held up for more than a week. There is no official Valve figure for the number of minutes a mobile push takes.
What is the difference between Wishlist and Follow?
Wishlist tracks one game for your personal list and eligible release or discount alerts. Follow is for announcements in Steam’s activity surfaces, so it is not a substitute for wishlisting when you want qualifying sale or release notices.

Can wishlist categories or privacy settings block alerts?
Yes, a category filter can narrow which games generate alerts. Privacy settings affect who can view your Wishlist, but they are separate from notification preferences.

In July 2026, Valve announced custom wishlist categories, category-based notification filtering, and options for adding a category from the On Wishlist dropdown. If alerts stopped after you created categories, check whether Only notify me about these wishlist categories is set to a subset rather than All. The filter can silently omit wishlisted games outside the selected categories.
Steam Support says Wishlist visibility follows Community Profile settings: the list can be visible to everyone, Steam friends, or only the account. Changing profile visibility does not itself turn release or sale notifications on or off; manage those in the notification preferences.
Valve also says a filtered wishlist view can be shared by link, even if the full Wishlist is private. Anyone with that link can view the shared list, and the link can be revoked. Treat a share link as a separate privacy choice from your profile visibility.
Can Steam alert me at a custom price?
No. Steam’s native wishlist settings have no price field, so its sale notification will not wait for a specific dollar amount or discount percentage. If a custom threshold matters, use a separate tracking method and check its current regional store coverage and permissions.
- Manual check: keep your target beside the game name and review your Wishlist during sales, sorting or filtering by discount where available.
- Cross-store tracking: IsThereAnyDeal can import a Steam Wishlist into a Waitlist and offer notification rules. Check the service’s current store and region coverage before relying on it.
- Price history: SteamDB can be used to inspect Steam price history and maintain a watchlist; its FAQ describes creating an account and manually importing a Steam Wishlist. History can help judge a sale, but it is not a Steam notification feature.
- Browser extensions: some extensions advertise wishlist imports, browser notifications, and custom price thresholds. Review permissions and the listing’s current details before installing; third-party features and background-check intervals are not Steam guarantees.
Any external tracker is separate from Steam, and its notification channels, availability, and regional coverage may differ. Steam does not formally document its store app-details endpoint for outside developers, so a custom script using it should not be mistaken for an official Steam alert setting.

Which alert setup fits how I use Steam?
Choose channels based on whether missing an event or receiving too many alerts is the bigger problem. Steam’s account preference page lets you tune the channels; category filters can narrow the set of games.
- For launch coverage: enable email and, where offered, mobile push for the full Wishlist. This increases the number of places an alert can appear, but can also mean more simultaneous messages when multiple titles change status.
- For a quieter phone: leave email enabled and turn off the Mobile App channel for wishlist sales; review the Wishlist periodically instead.
- For a small group of anticipated games: put them in a custom category and select that category if category-based notifications are available in your account.
- For demos as well as releases: enable the demo-release option if it appears and consider keeping demo candidates in a category you monitor.
Steam’s notification controls can change over time. If a label or channel described here does not match your current account, use the event wording—wishlist sale, release, or demo—as your guide and confirm the saved preference in the signed-in settings page.

Does Steam send a notification when a game gets a release date?
A release-date announcement is not among Valve’s documented wishlist notification triggers. You can Follow the game to see announcements in Steam’s activity surfaces, but that is different from a launch alert.
Will Steam email me if I remove a game from my Wishlist after a sale starts?
Valve’s documented rule sends a discount notice to users who have the game wishlisted when the notification is sent. If you remove it before then, you should not rely on receiving that alert.
Can someone see my Steam Wishlist if I share a category link?
A shared filtered-view link can expose that selected list to people who have the link even when your full Wishlist is private. You can revoke the link if you no longer want it accessible.
Does opting out of Steam marketing emails block receipts or Steam Guard codes?
No. Marketing preferences are separate from purchase receipts and Steam Guard security messages; changing wishlist or marketing options does not stop those account-related emails.
