Germany marked Unity Day on 3 October 2026 with its central ceremony in Bremen. President Frank-Walter Steinmeier warned of threats to democracy and social cohesion, according to a same-day report by Deutschlandfunk. The latest official figures cited by the Federal Government cover 2025, not incidents in 2026, and come from two distinct crime-reporting series.

What Steinmeier said at the 2026 ceremony

Deutschlandfunk reported that Steinmeier criticized what it described as the “unerträgliche politische Demagogie extremistischer Kräfte” (“intolerable political demagoguery of extremist forces”). The outlet also attributed to him concerns about online lies and manipulation and the destabilizing effects of populist parties.

This account is media reporting, not an official transcript. Its wording and descriptions should therefore be attributed to Deutschlandfunk rather than treated as a complete or verbatim record of the speech. The available account does not establish that every leader at the Bremen ceremony made the same warning.

What Germany’s latest official figures show

Figures published by the Federal Government in June 2026 measure offences recorded in calendar year 2025. They are the latest figures described here, not counts of incidents during 2026.

Constitutional-protection report: offences with an extremist background

The Federal Government’s 30 June 2026 summary of the 2025 Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution report recorded 58,851 extremist-motivated offences, up from 57,701 in 2024. It recorded 3,294 extremist-motivated violent offences, compared with 2,976 in 2024—an increase of roughly 10 percent.

The government said right-wing extremists remained the greatest threat to democracy, even as left-wing extremist violence increased. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described that rise as a “serious warning signal for our constitutional state.”

Politically motivated crime release: a separate series

A separate Federal Government release, published 9 June 2026, reported 85,837 politically motivated offences in 2025 and 4,156 politically motivated violent offences, the latter up about 1.2 percent. It said right-wing and far-right perpetrators committed by far the most offences, while left-motivated violence also rose.

These totals are not interchangeable: the releases use different definitions and scopes. Do not add them together or read either as a count of 2026 incidents.

How Unity Day’s message connects to democracy

Germany observes Unity Day on 3 October. At the 2025 ceremony in Saarbrücken, Chancellor Friedrich Merz presented unity as continuing work and emphasized democracy, the rule of law, conversation, and public participation. In the government’s English summary of that earlier speech, he said: “When we hear people discussing and arguing, that’s when we hear democracy.” That is context from 2025, not a quotation from the 2026 Bremen event.
