Genie Timeline’s November 6, 2013 feature matrix lists four editions: Free, Home, Professional, and Server. This guide compares the three paid editions—Home, Professional (Pro), and Server—because the matrix shows meaningful differences in their intended use and configuration. It supports a choice based on requirements, not a claim that one edition was faster or more reliable.
What distinguished the three paid editions?
The dated Genie9 Wiki feature matrix identifies several advanced settings as Pro/Server capabilities rather than Home capabilities. It does not provide enough information in the surfaced comparison to reconstruct every feature or limitation for every edition, so the table focuses on the distinctions it does establish.
| Edition | What the 2013 matrix establishes | Best fit based on those distinctions |
|---|---|---|
| Home | The listed advanced controls are assigned to Pro and Server, not Home. | A paid-edition buyer who does not need those controls. |
| Professional (Pro) | Includes the listed advanced settings. | A user who needs more control over backup behavior. |
| Server | Includes the listed advanced settings and supports server platforms and operation while the user is logged off. | A server environment or a backup that must keep running after the user logs off. |
What extra controls did Pro and Server offer?
The 2013 matrix marks these settings as available in Pro and Server:
- Editing the file types used for smart selection.
- Encryption.
- Configurable disaster-recovery and full-scan intervals.
- Deduplication controls.
- Advanced filtering.
- Delaying the backup service’s start.
- Date-based scheduling.
These are the advanced controls identified in the available comparison, not a complete feature inventory. The matrix does not establish exact 2013 prices, license terms, a full Windows compatibility list, or a complete list of Free-edition limitations.

When should you choose Home, Pro, or Server?
Choose Home for a straightforward paid workflow
Home is the appropriate fit among the paid editions if you do not need the advanced controls listed above and are not backing up a server platform or requiring logged-off operation. This recommendation follows the distinctions in the 2013 matrix; it is not a performance or reliability finding.
Choose Pro when configuration matters
Choose Professional if you specifically need settings such as encryption, editable smart-selection file types, advanced filtering, or control over scan intervals and scheduling. The matrix identifies these controls for Pro and Server.

Choose Server for server platforms or logged-off operation
The feature matrix states: “The Server edition only defers from Pro that it supports Server Platforms and runs when the user is logged off.” In other words, its documented distinction from Pro is server-platform support and the ability to run while the user is logged off. The wording is from the Genie9 Wiki feature matrix, dated November 6, 2013.
Where does the Free edition fit?
Free is the fourth edition named in the 2013 matrix, so “three editions” is accurate only when referring to the three paid options. The surfaced comparison does not provide a full row-by-row account of Free’s restrictions or capabilities. Check the original documentation for details before relying on a specific Free-edition feature.

Could an external drive serve as the backup destination?
Genie9’s current Timeline product page lists local and external-drive backup. That confirms the destination category for the current product description, but does not establish every 2013 edition’s exact destination support. If your setup supports it, an external hard drive is a practical destination; choose capacity and connection to suit your own files and PC. No particular model or capacity has been validated here.
How does 2013 Timeline compare with current product descriptions?
Keep the dated edition comparison separate from Genie9’s current descriptions. The current Timeline page describes the product as continuous or real-time backup. It says current Home includes continuous data protection, automatic file backup, version history, local and external-drive backup, and basic disaster recovery. Current Pro is described as adding advanced scheduling, network-drive, FTP/FTPS, email-server, SQL database, and advanced-encryption support. These claims describe current editions; they do not verify the 2013 feature set.

The current product page lists Home and Pro requirements of Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10, or 11; a 1 GHz processor; 512 MB RAM (1 GB recommended); and 200 MB of disk space. Treat those as current page specifications, not as requirements for the 2013 editions. A separate Genie Timeline Home 10 page, dated May 14, 2024, describes that product version and does not establish compatibility or requirements for 2013.

Genie9 positions Timeline as a simpler, continuous/real-time backup product and Backup Manager as a separate, more configurable option built around scheduled jobs. Its product comparison and Timeline versus Backup Manager explanation are vendor descriptions, not independent comparative tests. Consider Backup Manager if you need its scheduled-job approach or broader backup controls, but do not assume its features are Timeline features.
