Google’s Guided Vision is a camera-based feature in Gemini Live that gives spoken descriptions and interactive help with what an Android phone camera sees. It can help with tasks such as reading a label, finding an object, or understanding a room—but Google warns that it can make mistakes and must not be used for navigation or obstacle detection. Its larger significance is an argument, not a proven product outcome: AI is most useful when it helps people access information in the moment, on their own terms.

What Guided Vision does in Gemini Live

Guided Vision lets someone share a live Android phone camera view during a Gemini Live conversation, ask questions about what is visible, and hear spoken assistance. Google announced the feature on October 1, 2026, describing it as developed alongside the blind and low-vision community. Google’s announcement and Gemini Apps Help describe its capabilities; neither provides independent performance measurements.

Examples of help it offers

  • Read or translate small labels, menus, signs, or appliance displays.
  • Identify objects and help locate them—for example, Google describes asking where pepper is in a spice cabinet or finding a fallen earbud.
  • Describe colors, shapes, patterns, or clothing.
  • Give an audio description of surroundings, such as a room layout.
  • Offer spoken cues to reframe the camera, pan across a space, or center an object when the view is misaligned.

These are Google’s examples, not independently verified accuracy claims. The interactive conversation is central: rather than receiving only a one-time caption, a user can ask follow-up questions and adjust the camera based on spoken guidance.

How to turn on and use Guided Vision

  1. Update the Gemini app and Android system software.
  2. In the Gemini mobile app, open your profile settings and turn on Use Guided Vision in Live.
  3. Start Gemini Live, share the camera, and ask what you want to know about the view.

Android accessibility shortcuts can provide a faster way to open Guided Vision. In Android accessibility settings, assign Guided Vision to the floating accessibility button, a two-finger gesture, or both volume keys. With TalkBack enabled, open the TalkBack menu with a three-finger tap and choose Guided Vision. The available shortcut options and setup details are listed in Google’s Guided Vision help page.

Who can use it

Google says Guided Vision works on Android devices running Android 9 or later, in regions and languages where Gemini Live is supported. Rollout is gradual, so meeting those conditions does not guarantee the option has appeared on a particular phone or account. Google does not name a required phone make or model, and its guidance does not establish that users need to buy a new device.

What Guided Vision cannot safely do

Google warns that the feature can make mistakes. It is not a medical device or mobility aid, and it is not a substitute for a white cane, established mobility aids, or safe-travel guidance. Do not use it for navigation or obstacle detection; continue to rely on established mobility aids and safe-travel practices. A camera description that sounds confident is not a safety guarantee.

The official materials describe functions and intended use, but do not report an independent accuracy rate, error rate, or measured improvement in safety or independence. Google’s statement that the feature was built alongside blind and low-vision people does not, by itself, establish how representative the collaboration was or what outcomes users experienced.

How Guided Vision differs from other Google accessibility features

Google has several AI-related accessibility efforts, but they address different tasks and do not share Guided Vision’s product status.

Google Research has discussed an “accessibility gap”: the delay between a new feature’s release and the arrival of assistive support. Its article describes prototypes using live video for interactive audio descriptions, but does not measure Guided Vision’s results. Google Research’s article offers context for why accessibility built into products matters without serving as evidence of this feature’s impact.

Why this feature matters—and what remains unproven

Guided Vision illustrates a practical role for AI: turning a phone camera into a conversational way to ask about nearby information. That can make a small, everyday task more accessible without requiring the user to know a specialized command or interpret a visual interface alone. But the promise is not the same as proof. Google’s published material establishes what the feature is designed to do, not how reliably it performs across users, settings, or situations.
