Use TypeScript compiler checks and ESLint for repeatable, configurable diagnostics; use Gemini Code Assist as an additional reviewer that can explain code and suggest fixes. They do different jobs, and neither guarantees software quality. There is no controlled, current head-to-head test establishing that Gemini Code Assist catches more TypeScript defects than a specific TypeScript and ESLint configuration.
What is the difference between Gemini Code Assist and TypeScript linters?
Gemini Code Assist responds to code and prompts with suggestions, explanations, and proposed changes. TypeScript compiler diagnostics and ESLint rules check files against configured static rules. One offers contextual assistance; the others produce diagnostics based on the checks you enable.
| Comparison | Gemini Code Assist | TypeScript compiler and ESLint |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Uses code context and a prompt to suggest explanations, reviews, or modifications. Suggestions are not authoritative diagnostics. | Applies compiler options and enabled lint rules to the files included in the project and lint run. |
| What it can do | Google documents code completion and generation, test generation, debugging, code understanding, documentation, and prompt-based changes. Google’s overview describes the product; its usage guide documents code transformations such as /fix. |
TypeScript checks types and reports diagnostics according to the project’s compiler version, TSConfig, and included files. ESLint adds whichever TypeScript rules are configured through typescript-eslint. |
| Repeatability | Generated suggestions are not a fixed set of rule-based findings. Google notes that generation behavior can be non-deterministic in some plugin interactions. | For the same code, versions, files, and configuration, checks are designed to apply the same configured rules. |
| Automation | Useful for interactive review and debugging; a person must evaluate and validate proposed changes. | Can run consistently in local development and CI, including as a merge gate when configured that way. |
| Coverage control | Depends on the prompt, code context, and product features available in the user’s edition. | Depends on TSConfig settings, selected files, parser and project setup, and enabled ESLint rules. |
What can TypeScript and ESLint actually catch?
TypeScript compiler checks
The TypeScript compiler can act as a type checker even when another tool handles JavaScript output. Its diagnostics depend on the active TSConfig and the files in the program. The TSConfig Reference explains the available options.
For example, strict enables a family of stronger checks. noImplicitAny can flag places where TypeScript would otherwise infer any, while noImplicitReturns checks that function code paths return a value when appropriate. These options do not inspect files outside the compiler program, and the checks you get depend on the settings your project actually uses.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ESLint with typescript-eslint
ESLint supplies a separate, configurable rule layer for TypeScript when set up with typescript-eslint. The project’s active rules—not the general label “TypeScript linter”—determine what it reports. Parser configuration, project setup, and file selection also affect coverage. See the typescript-eslint setup guide for its configuration approach.
Can Gemini replace ESLint or catch TypeScript errors?
Gemini Code Assist can help examine code, explain potential problems, and propose a correction, but it should not replace configured compiler and lint checks. It may identify a concern that no enabled rule covers, but it can also miss defects or suggest an incorrect change. Google warns that Gemini Code Assist may generate output that seems plausible but is factually incorrect and recommends validating its output before use (Google Cloud Documentation).

Likewise, passing TypeScript and ESLint checks does not prove code is correct or secure: those tools only report issues covered by the active checks. The practical distinction is that static tools give your team a repeatable baseline, while Gemini can offer an additional, context-sensitive perspective that needs review.
What does the available AI code-review evidence show?
A 2025 preprint by Cihan, İçöz, Haratian, and Tüzün evaluated Gemini 2.0 Flash and GPT-4o on code-review tasks. It did not compare Gemini Code Assist with TypeScript or ESLint, and its results should not be read as real-world defect detection rates.

- On 492 mixed code blocks with problem descriptions, Gemini 2.0 Flash correctly classified correctness 63.89% of the time and corrected 54.26% of incorrect code under the authors’ setup.
- On 164 canonical HumanEval solutions with descriptions, its correctness-classification result was 66.67%.
- The paper reported variation by dataset and weaker performance without problem descriptions.
These bounded results support human review, not a general ranking of AI review against static checks. Read the study’s scope and methodology in the 2025 preprint.
How should you use Gemini with TypeScript checks?
- Configure a static baseline. Set the TypeScript options your project needs in TSConfig, and decide which ESLint rules and files to include. Keep the actual configuration in version control so teammates and CI use the same checks.
- Run checks during development and in CI. Use compiler and lint commands appropriate to your project. Make the checks required in CI if the team wants them to block merges; merely having a tool installed does not guarantee that all relevant files are checked.
- Ask Gemini for a targeted review when useful. Provide relevant code and context, such as the intended behavior or error message. You can ask it to explain a suspicious section or propose a fix, but treat the result as a suggestion.
- Inspect any proposed change. Check that it preserves intended behavior and does not introduce unrelated edits. Do not accept an AI-generated patch solely because its explanation sounds convincing.
- Rerun static checks and tests. Validate a Gemini-suggested change with the same compiler and lint checks, then run relevant tests before merging.
This workflow is a practical recommendation based on the tools’ documented roles and limitations, not a measured claim that combining them catches a particular percentage of defects.

Which should you choose?
- Choose TypeScript and ESLint checks as your baseline when you need predictable diagnostics, shared team rules, and automation in CI.
- Add Gemini Code Assist when code explanations, debugging help, test suggestions, or prompt-based edits would help your development workflow—and your team can review its output.
- Do not choose between them as if they were equivalent products. Static checks enforce configured rules; Gemini offers suggestions that can complement those checks but cannot replace their repeatability.
Product availability is time-sensitive.
