Gemini is a strong choice for everyday Android tasks that involve supported apps, conversational requests, and device controls; Google Assistant remains the better fit if you rely on features Gemini does not support. Neither is a universal winner. Your experience depends on the task, phone, default apps, permissions, account, language, and location.
What each assistant can do on an Android phone
On eligible Android phones, Gemini can serve as the primary mobile assistant. Google documents actions such as setting alarms and timers, opening apps, controlling media, handling notifications, and changing some phone settings. Exact behavior can depend on whether Gemini is the default assistant, the permissions you grant, and the phone’s software and apps.
Device actions and quick requests
Gemini can handle practical requests such as starting a timer, opening an app, or acting on a notification. Some settings actions require the Google app to be set as the default digital assistant; notification actions require notification access. Clock behavior can differ between manufacturers: a phone may use its maker’s clock app, while some devices use Google Clock when enabled. See Google’s Android device-assistance guidance.
Some actions can be requested while the phone is locked, including calls or text replies when you opt in, Maps requests, certain reminders and notes, smart-device controls, alarms, timers, media, and some phone controls. Requests involving personal information, such as calendar details, may require you to unlock the phone. Google lists the applicable conditions in its locked-device instructions.

Requests involving apps and services
Gemini’s Connected Apps can link requests to supported services. Depending on what is available to you, that can include email summaries, calendar events, supported calls and messages, media playback or search, and smart-home actions. Google describes app-connected tasks and examples such as Gmail, Maps, and Tasks in its Gemini Android help and Connected Apps help. Connection does not guarantee that every app or action works for every account, region, or device.
Where Google Assistant may still be the better fit
Google says some features and services familiar to Assistant users are not supported in Gemini. Its examples include Interpreter mode, podcasts, news and radio stations, and some third-party music providers. If one of those is part of your routine, check Google’s feature comparison and switching guidance before making Gemini your default.

Assistant also continues to power some familiar quick voice actions and remains available on many non-mobile devices, including smart displays and speakers. That means changing the assistant on an Android phone does not make Gemini a replacement for Assistant across every Google device or service.
How to choose for your own routine

Google’s support pages describe supported features; they are not a device-by-device reliability test. For a routine you depend on, test the precise request on your own phone, with your usual apps and permissions, rather than assuming a general feature description guarantees the same result everywhere.

Availability and switching considerations
You can choose Gemini as the primary mobile assistant on an eligible Android phone when the Google app is set as the device’s default assist app. Google’s setup and switching instructions explain how to change assistants and switch back if a feature you rely on is unsupported.
Access varies by device, language, location, account type, and supervision settings. Google says Gemini is offered in multiple languages and more than 150 countries, but that does not mean every feature is available in each place. Work or school accounts need access to Gemini Apps, and the mobile app is unavailable in Android Work Profile. Check Google’s availability and eligibility information for your situation. Do not assume that “Hey Google,” Voice Match, or every Assistant feature will work in every country or language.

- Confirm that Gemini is available for your phone, language, location, and account.
- In Android settings, check that the Google app is selected as the default assist app.
- Choose Gemini using Google’s assistant setup instructions, then grant only the permissions needed for your tasks.
- Test your most important requests, including any notification, clock, media, or connected-app actions you use regularly.
- If a required feature is missing, follow Google’s instructions to switch back to Google Assistant.
