For new projects, compare Gemini video generation with Veo against Runway; Sora is no longer available. Choose based on the kind of footage you need, the amount of creative control and editing you want, access in your country, and how many usable clips your budget can produce. There is no evidence here of a universal winner or a controlled independent head-to-head test, so the practical choice depends on your own workflow.
What changed: Sora is no longer an option
OpenAI’s Sora page says the product is no longer available as of April 26, 2026. Its page also contains older launch-era subscription information, but that is historical—not a current way to buy or access Sora. OpenAI’s Sora page
That leaves a more useful current question: should you use Google’s Gemini video generation with Veo, or Runway? “Other AI video tools” can only be compared responsibly when their current availability and features are verified; the information here does not establish a current, like-for-like comparison with additional services.
Gemini and Veo are not the same thing
Gemini is Google’s app; Veo is the video-generation model. Google’s current model page describes Veo 3.1 as supporting video with native audio, reference imagery, creative controls, and output up to 1080p and 4K. These are Google’s descriptions of its own product, not independent comparative findings. Google DeepMind’s Veo page

Google’s US subscription page lists video generation among Google AI plan features. The exact plan, model variant, availability, and usage limits a person receives depend on the applicable offering and market. Google cautions that Gemini limits can change, including in response to capacity, so a fixed number of daily or monthly video generations should not be assumed. Google AI plans · Gemini usage limits
When Veo is worth trying
- You want generated video and audio together, or want to test sound and ambience as part of a generation.
- You need reference imagery or creative controls for shaping a result.
- Your delivery needs 1080p or 4K output, and the specific Veo access available to you supports the target format.
Audio deserves a direct test if dialogue matters. Google DeepMind says natural, consistent spoken audio—particularly short speech segments—remains under active development. Try a representative dialogue prompt and check speech quality and synchronization before building a production around it. Google DeepMind’s Veo page

How Runway differs
Runway’s paid plans bundle credits with a range of AI video, image, and audio generation models and creative tools. Its plans also differ in credit allowances and features. This can suit a workflow that benefits from several models and tools in one workspace, but a bundle is useful only if its included capabilities match the work you actually do. Runway pricing
Runway’s credits fund image, video, and audio generation. The credit rate varies by model, duration, and resolution; Runway’s pricing FAQ specifies 12 credits per second for Gen-4.5. That means a plan’s headline credit allowance is not a fixed number of finished clips.

- Enhanced Screen Recording - Capture screen & webcam together, export as separate clips, and adjust placement in your final project.
- Color Adjustment Controls - Automatically improve image color, contrast, and quality of your videos.
- Frame Interpolation - Transform grainy footage into smoother, more detailed scenes by seamlessly adding AI-generated frames. (feature available on Intel AI PCs only)
- AI Object Mask - Auto-detect & mask any object, even in complex scenes, to highlight elements and add stunning effects.
- Brand Kits - Manage assets, colors, and designs to keep your video content consistent and memorable.
Keep native output separate from post-processing: Runway’s Standard plan lists 4K upscaling. That is not the same claim as generating natively at 4K. Google DeepMind, by contrast, describes Veo output up to 4K; confirm the format offered by the version you can actually access.
Compare the options against your job
| Your priority | What to check | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Speech, sound, or ambience | Whether audio is generated with the video, and how well dialogue and synchronization hold up on your prompts. | Try Veo if native audio is important, but validate spoken audio with a representative sample. Compare Runway’s available models and tools against the same prompt. |
| High-resolution delivery | Native generation resolution versus an upscaled output; the required delivery format. | Veo is described by Google as supporting 1080p and 4K output. Runway Standard lists 4K upscaling; do not treat that as native 4K generation. |
| Creative control and a broader workspace | Reference inputs, available models, editing and audio tools, and generation workflow. | Veo offers Google-described reference imagery and creative controls. Runway bundles multiple models and tools. Choose by the controls you need in practice, not the size of a feature list. |
| Predictable spending | Billing term, included credits, model-specific rates, reset or rollover rules, and revisions. | Runway publishes credit rates and plan rules. Google says Gemini limits can change. Estimate usable finished clips, including retries, rather than comparing monthly prices alone. |
| Availability | Country, subscription eligibility, model variant, and current usage limits. | Check the current local Google or Runway plan details before committing; Sora is discontinued according to OpenAI. |
What the listed plans cost—and what those figures mean
The following are the figures shown on the official pages available on October 4, 2026. They are not guarantees of permanent pricing or identical availability in every market.

| Service and plan | Displayed price and allowance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Pro, US subscription page | $19.99 per month | Google lists video generation among plan features. The price is the US page’s listing, not a worldwide price guarantee; check local access and current limits. Google AI plans |
| Runway Standard | $12 per month with annual billing, or $15 per month with monthly billing; 625 monthly credits | Runway’s displayed illustration equates 625 credits to 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 or 104 seconds of Gen-4 Turbo. These are model-specific generation-time conversions, not a promise of that much acceptable finished footage. The page lists no watermarks and 4K upscaling for Standard. Runway pricing |
| Runway Pro and Max | Larger credit pools and additional capabilities than Standard | The exact allowances and terms are listed on Runway’s live pricing page; do not infer a clip count without accounting for the selected model, duration, resolution, and revisions. Runway pricing |
Runway says Standard and Pro monthly credits do not roll over; Max allows up to one month of unused credits to roll over. Since generation consumes credits at model-specific rates, unused credits and failed or rejected attempts affect the practical value of a plan. Check the live terms when choosing a billing option. - Write down the deliverable. Specify whether you need dialogue, ambience, a reference-image-driven shot, a particular resolution, or access to a wider set of editing and generation tools.
- Check eligibility first. Open the official plan page for your country and confirm the available model, subscription, usage limits, and billing basis. Google warns limits can change; Runway’s credit terms vary by model and settings.
- Test the same representative brief. Use a prompt similar to your real work, including dialogue or reference imagery if those matter. Inspect the result for the qualities that determine whether you can use it, rather than judging on a single striking sample.
- Estimate cost per acceptable result. Include retries and revisions. For Runway, calculate credit consumption for the model, duration, and resolution you expect to use. For Gemini, verify the plan’s current limits rather than assuming a fixed clip allowance.
- Choose the workflow, not the headline. Prefer the service that meets your output requirements reliably within the local access and budget you have confirmed.
What benchmark claims can—and cannot—tell you
Google DeepMind’s Veo page reports vendor-run comparisons using 1,003 prompts for MovieGenBench text-to-video, 355 image-and-text pairs for VBench image-to-video, and 527 prompts for MovieGenBench audio/video; the page says it was last updated in October 2025. These are Google-published evaluations, not an independent ranking of the current services for every production task. The page also notes that some image-to-video comparisons could not include Sora 2 Pro because it did not support realistic human images in that evaluation. The existence of these figures does not establish a universal best choice—and Sora is no longer available. Google DeepMind’s Veo page
