Gemini Temporary Chats keep a conversation out of your normal Gemini history and personalization, but they do not make the conversation anonymous or delete it immediately. Google says Temporary Chats may be retained for up to 72 hours, are not used to train its AI models, and have reduced features such as no Connected Apps or Gems.
That makes Temporary Chat useful for a one-off question you do not want influencing future Gemini responses. It is not a secure vault, a promise of confidentiality, or a way to hide activity from every Google system, employer, administrator, or third party.

What is Gemini Temporary Chat?
Gemini Temporary Chat is a session-level privacy control that keeps a conversation out of your ordinary Gemini Apps Activity and recent-chat history. Google introduced the feature in August 2025 for one-off conversations that should not influence personalization or model training, according to Google’s product announcement.

The “incognito” comparison is useful only if its limits are clear. Browser incognito mode mainly changes local browser history and cookies; it does not make a user invisible to websites, internet providers, employers, or network administrators. Gemini Temporary Chat similarly changes how the conversation is handled in Gemini’s user-facing history and personalization systems, while Google still processes the content and temporarily retains it.
How do you start a Gemini Temporary Chat?
On the web
On a supported consumer Gemini web account, Google’s documented computer path is:
- Go to gemini.google.com and sign in.
- Next to New chat, select the Temporary chat icon or control.
- Enter your prompt.
- Select Submit.
A Temporary Chat indicator should remain visible at the top of the interface while the session is active. Google can change the icon’s appearance or placement by browser, country, account, or app version, so look for the Temporary Chat control in the new-chat interface rather than relying on a particular icon design.

Google confirms that Temporary Chat is available in the Gemini mobile app, but Google’s retrieved help page does not provide one universal mobile click sequence. Open the Gemini app, start a new conversation, and look for the Temporary Chat control in the new-chat interface. Confirm that the Temporary Chat indicator is visible before entering sensitive information.
For the consumer Gemini Apps experience, Google’s current help documentation says the user must be signed in with a personal Google Account and use Gemini on the web or in the mobile app. The same documentation says Temporary Chat is not available in Gemini in Chrome or Google Messages. What happens to a Temporary Chat after you leave?
Google says a Temporary Chat does not appear in Gemini Apps Activity or recent chats. After you leave the Temporary Chat, you no longer have access to it through the normal Gemini interface. Copy or export anything you need before leaving, but remember that pasting or exporting the content into another app creates a separate copy governed by that app’s policies.
Not appearing in history does not mean that the chat is not stored anywhere. Google’s privacy documentation says Temporary Chats are retained for up to 72 hours. According to Google’s Gemini privacy explanation, the retention supports answering the request, using recent conversation context, protecting against system failures, and helping protect Google, users, and the public.
The 72-hour statement is a maximum described by Google’s published policy, not a promise that every chat is manually reviewed or that every technical record disappears at exactly the same moment. The statement also does not override legal, security, abuse-prevention, organizational, or other separate retention processes that may apply.

Are Gemini Temporary Chats used for personalization or model training?
Google says Temporary Chats are not used to personalize your Gemini experience and are not used to train Google’s AI models. Google’s announcement of Temporary Chats and its privacy hub both describe those exclusions.
Those statements cover two specific uses, not every form of processing:
- Personalization: Google says the chat does not become lasting personal context for future Gemini responses.
- Model training: Google says Temporary Chats are excluded from training Google’s AI models.
- Service operation: Google still processes the prompt and temporarily retains the chat to respond and operate the service.
- Current-session context: Gemini can use the conversation while the session is active. Google’s privacy documentation says the last 24 hours of chat context may be used to respond.
In practical terms, Temporary Chat can remember what you said long enough to continue the current conversation, but it is not supposed to turn the conversation into lasting personalized context.

What happens if you submit feedback?
Feedback can change the privacy picture. Google’s privacy documentation says that, when Keep Activity is off and feedback is submitted, Google may collect the feedback and context needed to understand it, including the last 24 hours of chats, uploads, and data from Connected Apps.
Google’s consumer Temporary Chat help page lists response feedback as unavailable in Temporary Chat, so the normal feedback control may not appear in the session. The broader privacy documentation nevertheless explains separate feedback handling for relevant Gemini activity settings. Do not submit feedback containing sensitive content if minimizing disclosure is your priority.
Which Gemini features do Temporary Chats disable?
Temporary Chat is not simply a normal Gemini conversation with its history hidden. Google deliberately removes features that depend on saved activity, personal context, or connected account data.

Google documents these restrictions in its Temporary Chat feature limitations. The restrictions are a trade-off: Temporary Chat reduces persistence and personal context partly by preventing Gemini from using the account connections and features that make ordinary Gemini more useful.

Is Temporary Chat better than turning Keep Activity off?
Temporary Chat is usually better for one conversation, while Keep Activity off is better when you want an account-level default for future chats. Neither setting should be described as zero retention.

Choose Temporary Chat when you want a single conversation excluded from ordinary history and personalization without changing your account-wide behavior. Choose Keep Activity off when you want a broader default and accept that activity-dependent features may be limited.
Google’s published privacy rules are conditional, so check the relevant Gemini Apps Activity and privacy documentation before treating either control as a complete data-deletion mechanism.
What is the Google Workspace and Google Vault exception?
Workspace users must not assume that a Temporary Chat is hidden from their employer. In June 2026, Google introduced Workspace administrator controls for Gemini Temporary Chats and conversation deletion. Administrators can allow or disable Temporary Chat and can apply controls at the domain, organizational-unit, or group level, according to Google’s Workspace update.
Google Vault is the more important exception. If an organization has Gemini retention rules in Google Vault, those rules can apply to Gemini chat data even when an employee starts a Temporary Chat or deletes a conversation. Google’s Workspace guidance says users may see a notice that Gemini activity could remain visible to Workspace administrators or Vault users for a period defined by organizational retention rules; see Google’s Workspace administrator guidance.
A Workspace Temporary Chat may therefore disappear from an employee’s personal Gemini history while remaining retained or discoverable under organizational policies. Temporary Chat is not “incognito for work,” and employees should follow their employer’s rules for confidential, client, regulated, or proprietary information.
Is Gemini Temporary Chat safe for sensitive information?
Temporary Chat reduces some forms of persistence, but entering highly sensitive information remains risky. The prompt and any upload still go to Google’s Gemini service for processing, and Google says the data may be retained for up to 72 hours.
Do not paste the following into any consumer AI service unless you have a specific, approved reason and appropriate safeguards:

- Passwords, authentication codes, API keys, private encryption keys, or recovery codes.
- Full bank, payment, or financial-account credentials.
- Medical records containing unnecessary names, addresses, account numbers, or other identifiers.
- Confidential employer, client, legal, contractual, or regulated information.
- Personal data about another person without permission.
- Unredacted documents covered by professional, contractual, or regulatory confidentiality requirements.
For a sensitive but non-secret one-off question, remove names and identifying details before using Temporary Chat. For passwords, keys, confidential work material, or information whose disclosure could cause harm, the safest option is not to submit it.

Why is the Temporary Chat control missing?
A missing Temporary Chat control usually means the account, Google product, administrator policy, or current interface does not support the feature—not that a regular chat has automatically become temporary.
- Check the account: The consumer Gemini Apps path requires a signed-in personal Google Account. A work or school account may be governed by Workspace settings instead.
- Check the product: Use Gemini on the web or in the Gemini mobile app. Google says the feature is not available in Gemini in Chrome or Google Messages.
- Check administrator controls: A Workspace administrator can disable Temporary Chat or limit it by domain, organizational unit, or group.
- Check the interface: Google may change the control’s label or location, or the feature may be temporarily unavailable.
- Check sign-in status: Sign in before looking for the Temporary Chat control.

Google’s consumer subscription page lists a free Gemini tier at $0 per month, while paid plans primarily add usage limits, models, storage, and bundled services. Do not buy Google AI Pro or Ultra solely to obtain better Temporary Chat privacy.

Are there alternatives to Gemini Temporary Chat?
Claude offers a comparable feature called Incognito Chats. Anthropic’s official documentation says Incognito Chats are not saved to Claude chat history or Claude’s memory and are available across Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. See Anthropic’s Incognito Chats documentation.
Claude’s availability does not make its policies identical to Google’s. Compare retention, training, feedback, administrator access, connected services, and regional terms separately rather than assuming that every provider uses “incognito” to mean the same thing. Anthropic says Claude Pro pricing varies by region and directs users to its upgrade page or mobile app for the current price; its Pro plan help page provides that qualification.

A separate Google Account can help separate personal and professional contexts, but a second account does not make prompts anonymous to the AI provider. Account separation is an organizational convenience, not a substitute for avoiding sensitive disclosures.
When should you use Gemini Temporary Chat?
Use Gemini Temporary Chat for a one-off conversation when avoiding normal history and future personalization matters more than Connected Apps, Gems, saved context, or the ability to revisit the chat.
Use Keep Activity off when you want a broader account-level preference for future conversations and can accept its feature limitations. Use an approved enterprise AI environment when your employer’s confidentiality, retention, or regulatory requirements apply. Do not treat a personal account, a second account, or a Temporary Chat as permission to upload restricted company or client information.
