You do not have to upgrade from NotebookLM to keep using it. Google describes Gemini Notebook and NotebookLM as connected notebook experiences: sources added in one can appear in the other, so you can use features across both apps. If you need more capacity or organization-managed controls, compare the available access tiers against your workload before paying. The limits below are Google’s published figures checked on October 3, 2026; Google labels quotas subject to change.
What Gemini Notebook changes for a NotebookLM user
Gemini Notebook extends a source-grounded research workflow into the Gemini app. You can collect material in a notebook, ask questions about it, and use Gemini features alongside NotebookLM features. Google’s April 8, 2026 announcement calls notebooks “personal knowledge bases shared across Google products, starting in Gemini.” Google’s announcement describes the shared-source approach and rollout history.
This is an expansion, not a forced migration away from NotebookLM. Google identifies NotebookLM features such as Video Overviews and infographics, while connected notebooks let sources and chats persist in a project-specific space. Some capabilities depend on the app, account, and settings you use.
Which plan limits matter for your work?
Google’s plan page lists Gemini Notebook Standard, Plus, Pro, and Ultra access. At the time checked, the consumer-facing quota matrix distinguished Ultra storage options of 20 TB and 30 TB. These are published usage limits, not evidence that one tier produces proportionally better research or more accurate answers. Check Google’s live plan and quota page before choosing, because the figures can change.

Values in this table are quotas on Google’s plan page checked October 3, 2026; they are subject to change. Deep Research limits are shown at the cadence Google lists, so the Standard monthly allowance should not be compared as though it were a daily quota.
Choose by bottleneck, not by tier name
- Source-heavy projects: compare the sources-per-notebook limit with the size of your largest likely project. A higher notebook count does not increase the source limit for an individual notebook.
- Frequent use: estimate your typical daily chats, overviews, reports, study artifacts, and Deep Research runs. Choose a tier only if the published quota addresses a limit you actually encounter.
- Personal versus managed work: a personal Google AI plan is a different route from an organization-provided Workspace or Google Cloud entitlement. For company or school data, check the organization’s approved account and terms.
- Governance and models: consider whether you need early access or higher-tier models, advanced sharing, IAM controls, VPC Service Controls (VPC-SC), or enterprise protections—not just larger quotas.
- Availability: verify the relevant country, device, and app surface. Rollouts and feature availability can differ.
How to get more access
Google lists three broad routes: a personal Google AI plan, an eligible Workspace or Workspace for Education license, or an administrator-provided Google Cloud enterprise plan. The right route depends on who owns the account and manages its data. The plan page is the source for current eligibility and quotas; it does not establish one universal upgrade button or path for every account.
Personal Google Account
Google lists Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra among the paid access routes. Compare the live plan limits with your current usage, then use Google’s plan page to review availability and eligibility for your account. Gemini app notebooks currently require an adult personal Google Account for the Gemini integration. If you are using a work or school account, the personal-account route may not apply.

Work or school account
Workspace and Workspace for Education Notebook access is documented separately from Gemini app notebooks for personal accounts. Google says most users have access, but available limits and data handling depend on the license; an organization may need an eligible plan for expanded access. Ask your Workspace administrator which entitlement applies rather than purchasing a personal plan for organizational work.

For Gemini Notebook Enterprise, an administrator must provide an eligible Gemini Notebook for Enterprise or Gemini Enterprise license. Google documents enterprise capabilities including advanced sharing, IAM controls, VPC-SC, and enterprise-grade protection. See Google’s Gemini Notebook Enterprise documentation for the organization-managed route and its controls.
Build a source-grounded research workflow
Notebook quality depends in part on what actually made it into the source set. Google’s source guidance covers imports such as copied text, audio, Docs, Slides, Sheets, images, Word files, text or Markdown, PDFs, CSV, PowerPoint, eligible Play Books titles, ePub files, web URLs, public YouTube videos with captions, and Gemini chats in relevant workflows. Supported formats and availability vary by account, app, and source type. Google’s source and discovery help page gives current import details.

- Create or open a notebook for one research question or project, then add the documents and supported web sources you expect to use.
- Check the source list before asking for a synthesis. An imported webpage URL brings in webpage text, not its images, embedded video, or linked subpages; paywalled pages are unsupported. A PDF linked from a URL is handled as a PDF source.
- Ask questions tied to your material. Request a comparison, timeline, evidence table, or a list of disagreements, and ask the model to identify which source supports each point. Treat the result as a working synthesis and inspect the cited source passages.
- Use discovery when the notebook is missing material. Fast Research searches the web or accessible Drive content and presents results to select for import. Deep Research can browse multiple websites, produce a multi-page report and source list, and lets you inspect and choose sources to import.
- Choose the output tool that fits the next task. NotebookLM includes formats such as Audio and Video Overviews; Gemini notebooks can use Gemini app features. Availability of particular outputs depends on your plan and surface.
Import limits and Drive behavior
Google’s source guidance describes uploaded files up to 200 MB or 500,000 words per source; those figures apply to the documented import guidance, while plan limits can further constrain sources in a notebook. For Drive sources, you need view access. Google files can auto-update and sync every few minutes; changes are reflected when the notebook opens, and manual sync is also available. Comments and footnotes in Google files are not imported.
If a Drive file is deleted or your access is removed, its source becomes inaccessible. It still counts toward the source limit but is not referenced in chats or Studio generation. Gemini Notebook cannot edit or delete the original Drive file, so make source changes in Drive.
Research feature limits
Google says Deep Research is available only to people over 18, is subject to usage limits, and can take a couple of minutes. Mobile apps may have fewer source features than the web. For YouTube, only public videos with uploaded or auto-generated captions are supported. Review imported sources rather than assuming a URL or media item was fully ingested.

Use notebooks across Gemini and NotebookLM
Google says notebooks, sources, and chats can sync between Gemini and NotebookLM, and changes sync automatically. In Gemini, connected app features can support managing notebooks and sources with @Gemini Notebook. Notebooks can also have custom instructions. Some connected features require Keep Activity. When it is off, autosaving chats, memory of past chats, adding existing chats, Drive source access, and study or business notebooks are unavailable. Study notebooks are currently available at gemini.google.com but not in the Gemini app on Mac, according to Google’s help page. Feature coverage can differ among web, mobile, Mac, and enterprise surfaces.
Check account eligibility and privacy before importing sensitive material
Gemini app notebooks currently require an adult personal Google Account for the Gemini integration; the feature is not available there for work or school accounts. Workspace Notebook access is a separate path, and availability can roll out gradually. In the European Economic Area, Google says the Gemini Notebook connected app must be connected manually. The April 2026 launch announcement described an initial subscriber rollout; current eligibility is better checked in the live help pages than inferred from that launch schedule.

For consumer access, Google says data is not used to train Gemini Notebook unless the user provides feedback; if feedback is submitted, Google may review the full interaction context. Google says Workspace and Workspace for Education uploads, queries, and model responses are not reviewed by human reviewers and are not used to train AI models. For Google Cloud enterprise, Google describes enterprise-grade protections, says files remain in the GCP project and data regionalization is honored, and says files, chats, and outputs are not reviewed by human reviewers or used to improve generative AI models. Confirm the terms that apply to your account before uploading confidential or regulated information.
What a paid upgrade does—and does not—promise
Higher tiers raise published capacity and can include access to additional features, but quota figures do not establish research quality. Google’s June 8, 2026 NotebookLM announcement, updated July 16, described new agentic chat capabilities and more advanced reasoning as intended to tackle complex projects. That is Google’s product description, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee that an answer is accurate. For consequential work, verify claims against the underlying sources regardless of plan.
