Gemini in Chrome is a page-focused assistant; the Gemini mobile app is the broader Android assistant. In Chrome, you open a floating Gemini chat over the page you are reading, and that current page is shared as context by default. In the app, Gemini can also discuss the screen or a Chrome page, but it adds camera and photo questions, voice interaction, image generation, writing help, Google service integrations and selected assistant actions.
The practical choice is simple: use Chrome’s Gemini when your question is about the page in front of you; use the mobile app when you need an Android-wide assistant or capabilities that do not depend on a browser page.
The fundamental difference
Both experiences can answer questions about a webpage, which is why they can seem interchangeable. They are not the same product surface.
Gemini in Chrome on Android
Gemini in Chrome is built into the Android Chrome browsing session. You open its floating chat box from Chrome, and the current page is shared with Gemini by default so it can summarize, explain or compare what you are viewing. The conversation stays attached to that browsing task: you can continue reading while Gemini prepares an answer, minimize and reopen the chat, resize it, start a new chat or close it.

The Gemini mobile app
The Gemini app is designed to act as your Android mobile assistant. It can answer questions by text or voice, work from photos and the camera, help with writing and learning, summarize material into formats such as lists or tables, generate images, identify a song and connect to supported Google services. When Gemini is set as the mobile assistant, it can also look at content on your screen, including a page open in Chrome.
That means the app can cover the Chrome use case, but Chrome’s built-in experience is more direct when you are already reading and want help with that one page.
What Gemini in Chrome can do on Android
Google’s Android instructions describe a browser chat focused on the current Chrome page. On first use, Chrome asks you to opt in. After you enter a prompt and submit it, Gemini uses the page as context unless you turn sharing off.
Ask for a summary
Use a prompt such as Summarize this page in five bullet points to extract the main ideas from a long article. You can ask for a shorter version, a list of decisions, a timeline or the page’s key takeaways. The answer is grounded in the page Chrome shared, rather than requiring you to copy and paste its text.
Explain difficult material differently
Chrome’s examples include asking Gemini to explain a complex topic in another way. Specify the audience and format for a more useful result: Explain this for a beginner with one analogy, Define the technical terms in plain English or Turn this explanation into a step-by-step checklist.

Test your understanding
You can ask Gemini to quiz you on what you just read. For example, Ask me five questions about this article, one at a time, and tell me why an answer is wrong turns passive reading into a knowledge check.
Adapt information to a constraint
Google gives adapting a recipe to dietary needs as an example. State the constraint explicitly, such as a food allergy, vegetarian diet or a missing ingredient, and ask for substitutions and revised quantities. Treat the result as a suggestion: Gemini may misunderstand a recipe or propose an unsafe substitution, so verify ingredients and preparation details.

When a page contains alternatives, ask Gemini to compare them by the criteria that matter to you: Put the plans in a table with price, storage and cancellation terms or Which option best fits a two-day trip with a small budget? Recommendations are based on the page context and your prompt, not an independent guarantee that every detail is complete or current.
Keep browsing while the answer is prepared
The chat can be minimized while you continue looking through Chrome. Reopen it to read the response, resize the panel when it covers too much of the page, start a separate chat for a new subject or close it when you are done.
What is not established for Android Chrome
Google’s computer documentation discusses sharing up to 10 open tabs. The Android instructions describe sharing the current page and do not document that multi-tab workflow for Android. Do not assume that a desktop capability is available in the Android Chrome experience.

How to use Gemini in Chrome on an Android phone
- Update and open Chrome. Use the latest Chrome version, sign in to Chrome, and open the page you want to discuss. The Android feature is not described for Incognito browsing.
- Open Ask Gemini. From Chrome, choose the Ask Gemini entry that opens the floating chat box. On your first use, review the opt-in prompt.
- Check page sharing. The current page is shared by default. If you do not want the page used as context, use the control in the chat to stop sharing before sending your question.
- Enter a specific prompt. Try
Summarize this page,Explain the second section with an example,What claims here need verification?orCompare the two products described on this page. - Refine the answer. Ask for a different length, tone or format, such as a table, numbered steps or a short explanation for a child. You can minimize or resize the chat without leaving the page.
- Finish the session. Start a new chat when you change subjects, or close the panel to return to ordinary browsing.

The mobile app covers page questions but has a much wider input and action range.

You can type a question, speak to Gemini, attach a photo or ask about something visible through the camera. Examples include asking what an object is, extracting or rewriting text in a photograph, translating a sign, or getting help understanding an image. The Chrome-specific Android instructions do not list camera or photo input as a Chrome capability; these inputs belong to the mobile app experience.
Ask about the Android screen or a Chrome page
When Gemini is your mobile assistant, activate it while another app is open and choose Ask about screen or, where offered, Ask about page. In Chrome, this gives the app access to the content you are viewing so you can ask for a summary, explanation or follow-up. This is a different route to the same kind of page question: the app is operating as the system assistant rather than as Chrome’s own floating chat.
Writing, learning and language help
Google lists writing and brainstorming, learning support, grammar help and translation. You can ask for an outline, a rewrite in a specified tone, corrections with explanations or a study plan. As with any generated text, check names, quotations, calculations and other consequential details.
Summaries in useful formats
The app can summarize topics and organize the response as a list or table when that format helps. Tell it the output structure you need: Make a two-column table of claims and supporting evidence or Give me a 10-minute study outline with three checkpoints.

Google service integrations and planning
Google lists Gmail and Drive summaries and quick information, along with Maps and Flights planning, among the mobile app’s capabilities. These are app-level functions; the Android Chrome page does not list them as Chrome-specific examples. Access can depend on the account, enabled integrations and location.
Image generation and identification tasks
The app includes image generation and can identify a song. These functions are not described as features of Gemini in Chrome on Android.
Quick voice actions, with Assistant limits
Gemini can support “Hey Google” and some quick voice actions when available. Google says Assistant still helps power some familiar actions and warns that Gemini does not have complete Assistant feature parity. Interpreter mode and some podcast, news, radio and third-party music services are named as unsupported in Gemini. “Hey Google” and some Assistant features vary by language, country and account type.

Which one should you use?
Choose Gemini in Chrome when your task starts with a webpage
- You are reading an article, recipe, product page or instructions and want a quick summary.
- You need an explanation of one passage without leaving Chrome.
- You want to compare alternatives that appear on the same page.
- You want to quiz yourself on the page’s content.
- You prefer a browser panel that can be minimized, resized or closed without switching apps.
Choose the Gemini app when the task is broader than the page
- You need to use a photo or camera image as input.
- You want writing, grammar, translation, brainstorming or study help.
- You want to ask about whatever is on the Android screen, not only a Chrome page.
- You need Gmail or Drive summaries, or Maps and Flights planning.
- You want image generation, song identification or voice-based interaction.
Use both when the workflow changes
A practical workflow is to start in Chrome for a page summary, then move to the mobile app when you need a photo, a Google service integration or an Android-wide question. The two surfaces are complementary rather than two competing versions that produce a documented quality ranking. Google does not publish independent speed, accuracy or answer-quality comparisons between them.

Android eligibility and availability for Gemini in Chrome
Availability is dated and region-specific. As of October 21, 2026, Google’s Android requirements page lists all of the following for Gemini in Chrome:

- You must be in a supported region; Google lists the United States and India for this Android availability.
- Your phone must run Android 12 or higher and have at least 4 GB of RAM.
- You need the latest Chrome version.
- You must be signed in to Chrome, and the feature is not described for Incognito.
- The device language must be English; the feature is documented as Android-English-only.
- Work or school account access must be enabled by an administrator.
Google also says rollout is gradual. Meeting every listed requirement therefore does not guarantee that the control has reached your account or device. Availability can change, so check the current Google Android requirements and usage-help pages if the option is missing.
Privacy and context controls
Chrome page sharing
The current page is shared by default when you use Gemini in Chrome on Android. Before asking about sensitive material, inspect the sharing control and stop sharing if you do not want that page used as context. Closing the chat is not the same as changing the default for a new session; check the control whenever the content matters.
Mobile assistant screen access
In the app, screen or page questions are initiated when Gemini is acting as your mobile assistant. Select Ask about screen or Ask about page deliberately, especially when another person’s messages, account details or confidential work is visible.

Google cautions that Gemini responses may be inaccurate. Confirm medical, legal, financial, travel, dietary-allergy and account-related information against the original page or an authoritative service before acting on it. A fluent summary can still omit a qualification or misread a chart.
Common problems and fixes
The Ask Gemini option is missing in Chrome
- Confirm that the phone uses Android 12 or later and has at least 4 GB of RAM.
- Update Chrome to the latest release.
- Sign in to Chrome and leave Incognito mode.
- Set the device language to English.
- Check that you are 18 or older and located in a region where Google lists the Android feature.
- If you use a work or school account, ask the administrator whether access is enabled.
- Allow for gradual rollout; eligibility does not ensure immediate access.
Gemini answers without the page I expected
In Chrome, confirm that page sharing is enabled and that you asked from the page you intend to discuss. If you stopped sharing, Gemini no longer has that page as the default context. In the app, activate Gemini as the mobile assistant and choose Ask about screen or Ask about page before sending the question.
A voice action does not work
Gemini does not replace every Google Assistant feature. Interpreter mode and some podcast, news, radio and third-party music services are specifically listed as unsupported. Availability of “Hey Google” and other actions can also vary by language, country and account type.
The answer is confident but wrong
Ask Gemini to quote or identify the relevant passage, reopen the source page and check dates, numbers, exceptions and names yourself. For high-stakes decisions, use the original service or a qualified professional rather than treating generated text as confirmation.
Bottom line
On Android, Gemini in Chrome is the fastest path from a webpage to a focused conversation about that page. The Gemini app is the better all-purpose assistant: it can also discuss the screen or a Chrome page, while adding camera and photo input, voice, image generation, writing and learning help, selected Google integrations and some assistant actions. Start with Chrome for page understanding; switch to the app when your task extends beyond the browser.
